Les Congolâtres
Fig. 24
The cover shown in Fig 24 is an
early cover sent from their No. 1
F.P.O. – 1 August 1960. The
earliest recorded date of use is 25
July 1960. This is unusual in that it
nd
was addressed to Major Crabbe, 2
Ghana Regiment at No. 2 F.P.O.
within the Congo. Ghana
maintained a unit in the Congo until
Christmas 1963. The last unit was
th
the 4 Battalion Ghana Regiment.
Battalion Ghana Regiment.
7. INDONESIAN Contingent / Contingent INDONESIEN
Fig 25
The first Indonesian Contingent served in the Congo between September 1960 and May 1961. This
consisted of 1,074 troops. Fig 25 shows a scarce uprated Belgian Congo airletter sent in November 1960
from a soldier in Garuda 2, Coquilhatville to Indonesia. This was forwarded to Leopoldville, postmarked
and then entered the Congo postal system. A second contingent from Indonesia arrived in the Congo in
1962, returning a year later. This consisted of 3,547 troops. However I have never seen any mail from this
later group which is surprising considering the large number of soldiers involved.
The handstamp shown in Fig 26 (KONTINGEN INDONESIA GARUDA III) has been recorded on mail.
