Austria participated in the
U.N. Congo operation by
dispatching a medical
contingent initially to
Leopoldville. This cover
(Fig. 10) was sent in January
1961 from the Austrian
Hospital in Leopoldville to
Vienna. There is a ‘WIEN’
arrival datestamp on the
reverse. The Austrian
Contingent used the Congo
postal service for their mail.
The correct European
Airmail letter rate was 8 Fr
in 1961. Postage was
overpaid by 50ct.

L'Autriche a participé à l'opération des
Nations Unies au Congo en envoyant
initialement un contingent médical à Léopoldville. Cette lettre (Fig. 10) a été envoyée en janvier 1961 de
l'hôpital autrichien de Léopoldville à Vienne. Il y a un dateur d'arrivée « WIEN » au verso. Le contingent
autrichien a utilisé le service postal du Congo pour son courrier. Le tarif postal correct de la poste
aérienne vers l’Europe était de 8 Fr en 1961. Les frais de port étaient sur-affranchis de 50c.

to Vienna in
July 1963. The
Austrians took
over
responsibility
for the hospital
in Luluabourg in
April 1962. Again, this cover was posted via the Congo postal service. The sender gives his address as
ONUC BP 7248 (The ONUC Leopoldville headquarters) although actually posted in the town of
Luluabourg.

La deuxième lettre de l'équipe autrichienne est montrée à la Fig. 11. Elle a été expédiée vers Vienne en
juillet 1963. Les Autrichiens ont pris la responsabilité de l'hôpital de Luluabourg en avril 1962. Là
encore, cette lettre a été postée via le service postal du Congo. L'expéditeur donne son adresse comme
ONUC BP 7248 (Le siège de l'ONUC à Léopoldville) bien qu'en réalité, elle fut postée dans la ville de
Luluabourg.
