DAVIS SCHOOL DISTRICT HONORS TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AT
EDUCATORS’ HALL OF FAME
April 19, 1999
Farmington. Seventy-five outstanding educators
were chosen by their peers for honors, which were bestowed by the Davis School District at their ninth annual Educators’
Hall of Fame. Honorees represent each of 69 schools, counselors, related servers and each level of administration--elementary
principals, secondary principals, assistant principals and district administrators.
The Bountiful Automobile Dealers Association
has been long-time sponsors of this program that recognizes teachers who are exemplary in their work with students in the
classroom. Many of the teachers selected for recognition have also made extensive contributions to education beyond their
own schools. Their work has frequently contributed to district programs and often ideas emanating from district classrooms
are adopted statewide and even nationally.
Awards were presented following a dinner for
honorees and partners at Northridge High School. Individual recognition of each Hall of Fame teacher and administrator was
followed by sixteen special awards: three teachers of the year, eight Bountiful Automobile Dealers Association "Horizon" awards,
and five Davis School District Foundation "Excel" awards.
A Knowlton Elementary School teacher who distinguished
herself as an innovator while leading the Bountiful Elementary faculty in creating the SEP (Student Education Plan) and currently
as teacher of a successful multi-age classroom was selected as the district’s Teacher of the Year. JoLyn S. Baldwin
has dedicated hundreds of hours training teachers across Utah and beyond in the effective implementation of the SEP. Mrs.
Baldwin will be the district’s nominee for Utah Teacher of the Year.
Two extraordinary teachers were named Secondary
Teacher of the Year and Elementary Teacher of the Year. They were presented with $1,000 award each, sponsored by Representative
Kevin Garn and his wife, Tanya.
The
Secondary Teacher of the Year, Darrell Bailey, has been referred to as a legend at Viewmont High School both as a teacher
of Current Issues and Social Studies and as a builder of responsible young men and women. In addition to regular classroom
responsibilities, Mr. Bailey spends Wednesday nights at school to help students.
Betsy Thurgood, Elementary Teacher of the Year,
is becoming a legend in the West Point Elementary School community for her exceptional classroom work and also for leading
the way in developing an ambitious Outdoor Learning Center. Not only has she coordinated community resources in bringing the
Center to reality, she has written curriculum and trained teachers as well as organizing student leadership in developing
the ultimate use of the Center.
These
are teachers who exceed expectations in their abilities to educate:
