Introduction

Dès le deuxième semestre de 1940, le gouverneur général Ryckmans avait chargé le
médecin provincial Thomas, de prendre contact avec le commandement britannique de
l'Est-Africain. Le but? Fournir éventuellement une aide médicale dans la lutte entreprise
contre les Italiens.

As early as the second half of 1940, Governor General Ryckmans had instructed the provincial doctor
Thomas, to make contact with the British East African Command. The aim? Possibly to provide medical aid
in the fight against the Italians.

En décembre, une petite formation médicale avec à sa tête le médecin belge A. Thomas (nommé médecin
chef de cette unité) avait été constituée et mise à la disposition des Britanniques en Afrique-Orientale.

In December, a small medical training with the Belgian doctor A. Thomas (appointed chief doctor of this
unit) had been set up and made available to the British in East Africa.

Cette unité est donc placée sous commandement britannique (l’unité est commandée par A. Thomas qui
reçoit ses ordres de l’Etat-Major britannique) et sera déployée plusieurs fois et sur plusieurs théâtres
d’opérations. Elle reçoit le nom de 10th Casualty Clearing Station (10 CCS) et puis en mai 1943 on rajoutera
« Belgian Congo » à Casualty Clearing Station (10 BCCCS) lorsque l’unité sera envoyée en Inde et

incorporée à la 11 (East Africa) Division .

This unit is therefore placed under British Command (the unit is commanded by A. Thomas who receives his
orders from the British General Staff) and will be deployed several times and in several places of operations.
It was given the name 10th Casualty Clearing Station (10 CCS) and then in May 1943 "Belgian Congo" was
added to Casualty Clearing Station (10 BCCCS) when the unit was sent to India and incorporated into the
