Field Trip to the San Diego Blood Bank
(March 25, 2026)
About a dozen ARCS Members, spouses
and a Scripps Research Scholar were
treated to a fascinating lecture and tour of
the San Diego Blood Bank on March 25.
They learned just how cutting edge our
local blood bank is and how it's not so
local, as it serves communities as far north
as Los Angeles and exports rare blood
overseas as needed. According to CEO
Doug Morton, the Blood Bank processes Blood Bank CEO Doug Morton shows ARCS
guests around the facility. (l to r) Doug
approximately10,000 units of blood per Morton, a grateful Blood Bank recipient,
month and serves hospitals throughout Rachel Collins, Cindy and Tim Wollaeger
Southern California. Services include blood collection, component preparation,
plateletpheresis, plasmapheresis, leukapheresis, washed blood, frozen blood, autologous
storage, designated donation services, and a reference laboratory. In addition, San Diego
Blood Bank’s Cord Blood Banking Program provides lifesaving stem cell transplants to
patients worldwide. Its precision blood-banking practices are cutting edge, making our
Blood Bank a world leader in matching the best blood for each patient.
Of course, the Blood Bank's community
blood draws are the stuff of legend,
having collected large quantities at
ComicCon, Padre games and the San
Diego Auto Show, among many others,
including the Chargers back in the day.
After the lecture and tour, attendees
enjoyed conversation with staff and
(l to r) Blood Bank Chief Medical Officer Mark lunch on the patio. A great time was
