Matthew 17

Jesus' Transfiguration

(1) After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother up on a high mountain by themselves.

(2) There Jesus was transfigured before them, and his face shined as the sun, and his clothing was white as the light.

(3) Then, behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with him.

(4) And Peter spoke and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you will, let us make here three tabernacles: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

(5) While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold a voice out of the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; all of YOU, hear him."

(6) When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.

(7) And Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Arise, and do not be afraid."

(8) When they lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, except Jesus only.

(9) As they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man has risen again from the dead."

Jesus Says Not To Speak of What Was Seen

(10) His disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

(11) Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly, Elijah shall come first, and restore all things.

(12) But I say to you, That Elijah has already come, and they did not know, but did to him whatever they desired. Likewise the Son of man shall also suffer by them."

(13) Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.

Jesus Cures a Boy with a Devil

(14) When they came to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

(15) "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is epileptic, and miserably sick, for he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.

(16) So I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.

(17) Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to me."

(18) Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour.

Desciples Ask Why They Could Not Cast the Devil Out

(19) Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, "Why could we not cast him out?"

(20) Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for truly I say to you, If YOU have faith as a grain of mustard seed, YOU shall say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it shall move; and nothing shall be impossible for you.

(21) But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

(22) While they dwelled in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men,

(23) and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again." And they were exceedingly sorry.

Tribute Money from Fish’s Mouth

(24) When they came to Capernaum, those that collected tribute money came to Peter, and said, "Does your master not pay tribute?"

(25) He said, "Yes." And when he came into the house, Jesus prevented him from speaking, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute, from their own children, or from strangers?"

(26) Peter said to him, "From strangers." Jesus said to him, "Then the children are free."

(27) But, lest we offend them, you go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the fish that comes up first, and when you open his mouth, you shall find a piece of money; take that, and give to them for me and you."
