Genesis 9

God Defines Order Between Man and Animals

(1) God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.

(2) And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on all that moves on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are delivered into your hand.

(3) Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. Just as I gave you the green herb, I now give you all things.

Man Is Not to Eat Blood

(4) But YOU shall not eat flesh with its life, which is the blood.

(5) Surely, the blood of your life I will require. At the hand of every beast I will require it, and at the hand of man. At the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

(6) Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed. For God made man in his own image.

(7) And YOU, be fruitful, multiply and bring forth abundantly on the earth, and multiply on it."

God’s Covenant Not to Flood the Earth Again

(8) God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,

(9) "Behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your offspring after you,

(10) and with every living creature that is with you, birds, cattle and every beast of the earth with you. From all that went out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

(11) I will establish my covenant with you. Neither shall all flesh be cut off again by floodwaters, nor shall there ever be a flood that destroys the earth again.

Rainbow as a Token of God’s Covenent

(12) And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations.

(13) I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of a covenant between me and the earth.

(14) It shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud.

(15) And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. The waters will never again be used to destroy all flesh in a flood.

(16) The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth."

(17) And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Noah’s Sons

(18) The sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham is the father of Canaan.

(19) These are the three sons of Noah and from them the whole earth was dispersed.

Noah Becomes Drunk With Wine

(20) And Noah began farming and he planted a vineyard.

(21) And he drank of the wine and became drunk, and was uncovered in his tent.

Ham Sees Noah Naked

(22) And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.

(23) Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered their naked father. Their faces were backward, so they did not see their father naked.

(24) Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.

Noah Curses Canaan

(25) And he said, "Cursed be Canaan. A servant of servants he shall be to his brothers."

(26) And he said, "Blessed be the LORD God of Shem. Canaan shall be his servant.

(27) God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem. Canaan shall be his servant."

Noah Dies

(28) Noah lived 350 years after the flood.

(29) All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
