Maintaining Your 20x20x1 Air Filter
Having a 20x20x1 air filter in your home is essential for keeping the air clean and free of allergens, dust, and other airborne particles. However, if you don't take care of it properly, it can become clogged with dirt and debris, reducing the efficiency of your air conditioning system. To ensure that your filter is working properly, here's how to clean it:
Gathering Your Supplies
Before you start cleaning your filter, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. You'll need a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment, rubber gloves, a bucket or bowl filled with warm water and dish soap, a scrub brush, and a new 20x20x1 air filter.
Removing the Old Filter
The first step is to remove the old filter from its housing. Most filters are held in place by clips or latches. Carefully open them up and slide out the filter. If you're having trouble removing it from its housing, check your owner's manual for instructions.
Vacuuming Away Debris
Once you've removed the old filter from its housing unit, use the vacuum cleaner to get rid of any dirt or debris that may be stuck on it. Make sure to get both sides of the filter so that no dirt remains on either side. Be careful not to damage it while vacuuming.
Cleaning With Soap & Water
After vacuuming away any debris, put on your rubber gloves and fill up a bucket or bowl with warm water and dish soap. Submerge the dirty filter into this mixture, then use a scrub brush to gently scrub away any remaining dirt or debris. Rinse off with clean water when finished.
Drying Out The Filter
Once you've washed off all of the dirt, make sure to dry out your newly cleaned air filter completely before re-installing it. The best way to do this is by laying it flat on top of an absorbent towel until dry. Alternatively, if time is an issue, use a hair dryer set on low heat until completely dry.
Re-Installing The Cleaned Filter
When everything has been dried out, carefully slide the filter back into its housing unit and secure using clips or latches. Make sure all sides are sealed properly so that no dust can enter again.
