Postcards
An illustrator and painter born in
1887, he was the son of painter Eu-
gène Chaperon.
Nicknamed Chap, he also appears
to have been behind a number of
postcards, including a culinary se-
ries under the name Jean Paris.
As Jean Chaperon, he specialised
in humorous postcards, and was
keen to use them to mark events
in history. This is how he illustrated
the First World War. He also wor-
ked as a caricaturist for a number
of French newspapers, including
‘Le Rire’, ‘Le Journal’, ‘Le Temps’
and ‘La Baïonnette’.
Alongside his humorous work, he
developed a much more classical
style, reflecting the Parisian ‘belle
époque’.
He died in Nice on 25 January 1969,
leaving behind many postcards
that I hope you will enjoy seeing on
Delcampe.
