Tips for Wildlife Photography
The best period to do photography at Ranthambore is summers, between April to June. This is
the time when visibility is the best and it’s easier to spot tigers as they home on to few water-
holes which exist during this period. However, during this period, the light is very harsh so you
have to make the best of it. All photography in Ranthambore needs to be done during a safari
from a Gypsy or Canter. You do not have the liberty of setting up blinds etc. neither can you get
down from the vehicle to close up or get a better angle or direction, so luck plays a great part.
As soon as a major game such as the tiger is sited, the word floats in air and each and every
vehicle homes on to that site making it crowded. Your vehicle may get stuck between two ve-
hicles depriving you the freedom to re position to get your best shot. You will need to be inno-
vative to get your best shot from were ever you are.
The good news is that the tigers of Ranthambore have got used to the safari vehicles and the
people in it and never seem to be in a hurry to disengage. So if you spot a tiger then there is
good chance that you may get 15 minutes or more to click as many snaps you can and 15 min-
utes is a lot for a photographer who knows his job.
If your main aim is to do photography, then you may like to hire an exclusive vehicle by paying
for all the seats.
Your subject
People come to Ranthambore to see and photograph tigers but there is more there. About 33
species of mammals and 300 odd species of birds have been recorded here apart from large
variety of reptiles, so look for them too. A candid photograph of a langur with her baby, monitor
lizards grappling or dancing peacocks make excellent photos. You know what? When a tiger is
sighted you will get to know. I suggest you keep your eyes glued to the trees for birds because
they are the ones difficult to spot.
