Matthew 20

Parable of the Vineyard Workers

(1) For the kingdom of heaven is like a man that is the master of his house, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

(2) When he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

(3) He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

(4) and said to them, 'YOU also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' And so they went.

5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

(6) And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said to them, 'Why do YOU stand here idle all day?'

(7) They said to him, 'Because no man has hired us.' He said to them, 'YOU also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right, YOU shall receive.'

(8) So when evening came, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers, and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.'

(9) When those that were hired about the eleventh hour came, every man received a penny.

(10) So when the first came, they supposed that they should receive more, but every man likewise received a penny.

(11) And when they had received it, they murmured against the master of the house,

(12) saying, 'Those hired last have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day.'

(13) But he answered one of them, and said, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me to work for a penny?

(14) Take that which is yours, and go your way. I will give to the last ones hired, the same as I gave to you.

(15) Is it not lawful for me to do what I choose with what I own? Is your eye evil, because I am good?

(16) So the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few chosen."

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection

(17) As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem he took the twelve disciples aside on the way, and said to them,

(18) "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,

(19) and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify; but on the third day he shall rise again."

A Mother’s Requests For Her Sons

(20) Then the mother of Zebedee’s children came to him with her sons, worshipping him, and asking a certain thing from him.

(21) And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on your right hand, and the other on the left, in your kingdom."

(22) But Jesus answered and said, "YOU do not know what YOU ask. Are YOU able to drink of the cup that I shall drink, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to him, "We are able."

(23) He said to them, Indeed YOU shall drink my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to those for whom it is prepared by my Father."

(24) When the other ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

(25) But Jesus called them to him, and said, "YOU know that the rulers of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority over them.

(26) But it shall not be so among you; but whoever will be great among you, let him be your servant;

(27) And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant;

(28) Even as the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Jesus Gives Sight to Two Blind Men

(29) As they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

(30) Behold, two blind men sitting by the road side, cried out when they heard that Jesus passed by, saying, "Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David."

(31) The multitude rebuked them, that they should hold their peace; but they cried out even more, saying, "Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David."

(32) And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, "What do YOU want me to do for you?"

(33) They said to him, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened."

(34) So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
