Matthew 4:1

KJV:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Matthew 4:2

KJV:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Matthew 4:3

KJV:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Notes: "Made" highlighted in the KJV verse is Strong’s G1096 with a Strong’s definition of "to come into being, to happen, to become."


Matthew 4:4

KJV:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

KJVu: 4 But he answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. '"


Matthew 4:5

KJV:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

Notes: Virtually all translations say "the pinnacle" while the KJV says "a pinnacle." The two have slightly different meanings as such, "the pinnacle" means there was only one pinnacle, while "a pinnacle" infers there were more than one pinnacle. Not knowing which is correct, I left the KJV wording of "a pinnacle" in place.


Matthew 4:6

KJV:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down : for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

KJVu: 6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down . For it is written, 'He shall give his angels charge concerning you,' and 'in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you strike your foot against a stone. '"

Notes: "Dash" highlighted in the KJV verse is Strong’s G4350 with a Strong’s definition of "to strike against, to stumble."


Matthew 4:7

KJV:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Matthew 4:8

KJV:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them ;

Matthew 4:9

Matthew 4:10

KJV:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan : for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Notes: "Hence" highlighted in the KJV verse is Strong’s G5217 with a Strong’s definition of "to lead or bring under, to lead on slowly, to depart."


Matthew 4:11

KJV:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Matthew 4:12

KJV:12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee ;

Notes: "Cast" highlighted in the KJV verse is Strong’s G3860 with a Strong’s definition of "to hand over, to give or deliver over, to betray." Originally, I updated with "delivered," but it was more awkward than it needed to be. "Sent" conveys the same thought and is used commonly.


Matthew 4:13

KJV:13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim :
