A distinction is made between a ‘silent’
pictorial cancellation (flamme muette)
with straight or wavy cancellation
lines (fig. 6), one featuring simple text
(known as ‘expressive’ (flamme par- fig 5
lante)) (fig. 7) and one with more or
less ornamental graphics (‘illustrated’
pictorial cancellation, flamme illus-
trée) (fig. 8) which can be permanent
or temporary.
The spectacular nature of the graphics
(fig.9), often reflected in a refined, even fig 6
artistic illustration, the advertising na-
ture of the topic at hand spanning a
wide range of very varied themes, the
growing development of pictorial can-
cellations, and the increasing interest
in various postal prints gave rise to a
real craze for this type of collecting. fig 7
Consequently, a French association
was created in 1968 under the name
AS.CO.FLAM.ES. (ASsociation des
COllectionneurs de FLAMmes, Asso-
ciation of Pictorial Cancellation Collec-
tors) with a view to bringing together
people interested in this type of collec- fig 8
ting, to help them in their prospecting,
to notify them of publications, to give
them ideas about potential classifi-
cation, and to put them in touch with
each other.
Since research tends to constantly
expand to include all types of cancel-
lation covering a given theme or geo-
graphical sector (hand cancellations
- first day cancellations - commemo-
rative cancellations - maxicards, etc.),
we ended up widening our scope to all
