Two other very interesting letters from this pe-
riod caught my attention. On page 190, first of
all:
Letter sent by the general in chief of the Army of
Italy from Milan on 4 fructidor year V (21 August
1797) to Guillaume-Charles Faipoult, Minister
Plenipotentiary of the Directory in the Republic
of Genoa.
“[...] It is more urgent than ever that you consult
the government (of Genoa) in order to begin to
organise 3,000 infantry men, 300 cavalry and ar-
tillery soldiers, with which the Republic of Genoa
appears willing to provide us […]”.
The letterhead includes a girl with her wings
spread who represents Victory holding a laurel
wreath (that stands for the military glory of the
general) in one hand and a palm (glory, victory)
in the other hand, trampling on enemy flags with
her feet. (Collection Famille Giribone)
This exceptional letter is signed by Bonaparte,
then General-in-Chief of the Army of Italy. It is by
definition a very rare historical piece.
