Fri Dec 25: Christmas concluded. All the family here to dinner. Had roast turkey & brant with oyster soup. A bad south west wind all the afternoon. The Samish dyke gave way in several places and C. Marihugh's dike has a break in it.
Sat Dec 26: Windy & showery. John & Grant came home this eve. Tide not as high as yesterday.
Sun Dec 27: Rainy last night & some to day. Frank started for Tacoma at home all day. John & Pearl went home this P.M.
Mon Dec 28: Another windy night & some rain. Tide pretty high & a moderate west wind all day. Walked over the dike and found it all night except one place which was washing out some. Found "Old Maud" sick & sent for Dr Phinney who got here in time to see her die. The Misses Stacey here to day.

Wed Jan 06: Temp 11 at Kalsos, 12 here & 10 at Wilsons and reported to be zero in Bellingham. Strong wind to day from the north. The Fidalgo in for Crumine's & Osborne's oats. Began reading "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine".
Thu Jan 07:[margin: Temp 10] Very cold all day. Highest ther. to day 13. Put the horses in to night for the first. Temp. 10 at bed time. Mrs Jenne died to night. No signs of any change.
Fri Jan 08:[margin: Temp 10 at 6 AM. Temp 9 at 10 PM.] Mercury rose to 17° once today but Cold winter is still with us. One chicken died from frost. Began reading "The Riverman".
Sat Jan 09:[margin: Temp 13° at 6 A.M.] and snowing. This is some winter. A little warmer to day, up to 22° noon.

Mon Jan 11: Earthquake at 3.45. Peth & Smith here this eve. Temp 10° at 6 A.M. Clear & no sign of a thaw. 9° at 10 P.M. Doing chores & fixing up.
Tue Jan 12: Temp 15°. Grant went to the church wood cutting bee. Ed Stacey here for hay. A letter from Laura. A little warmer today and got up to 25°.
Wed Jan 13: Temp 18 at 7 A.M. and up to 30° in the P.M. Light south wind. Grant went to town with W Peth. A letter from Nettie. Wrote to Geo to day & went to the station for the paper.
Thu Jan 14: Temp 28°/Snowed some to day but not very cold. Working at water pipes & got them to work to fill the boiler. Grant began making a dog house.
Fri Jan 15: Temp 46° with some light rain and south wind. Snow all gone this A.M. Ice in the slough yet. Self working at the water pipes & patched them up and gone them to working except the wash board in the bath room which where the connections are both broken.
Sat Jan 16:[margin: Ida sick abed.] Windy but no rain. Self went to town & got some this to fix water works, &c. Paid bills at this Fair and Polson's. Grant phone to Dr. Palmer to come see Ida. I went to the depot to get him.
Sun Jan 17:[margin: Ida miserable all day. Temp 50] The train did not come till after 3 A.M. & I did not get to bed till five this A.M. Palmer & Grant duck hunting. The ice went out of the slough to day. Light rains.
Mon Jan 18:[margin: Ida some better.] Palmer went home this A.M. Showery with south wind. Choring and working on Pioneer books.
Tue Jan 19: Windy and rainy all night. the boys went clam digging tonight. Ida poorly to day.
Wed Jan 20: High tide. Ida passed a bad night and set for Dr. Bailey this A.M. Weather rough & lots of rain. Railroads having lots of trouble with slides this week.
Thu Jan 21: Mr McGinnis sick. Grant & Fred went to Anacortes and caught a saw log. Land full of water. Ida miserable. [margin: Lots of rain. Bar. at 29.15 lowest I ever saw it.]
Fri Jan 22: Cold wind and a snow squall last night. Mrs Howe up to help Ida to day get ready for Seattle. Found the dyke in bad shape and the boys Fred, Grant & Peth's loading scow to night.
Sat Jan 23: Ida no better. Getting ready for Seattle. Pearl here & Mrs Howe. Ida, Mrs Howe & self started for Seattle at 5 P.M. Arrived at 10.30 and at the sanatarium at 11.45.
Sun Jan 24:[margin: Ida not much better.] In Seattle till 2 P.M. then went to Tacoma & staid all night with Nettie & Frank.
Mon Jan 25: Went to Seattle and to see "Ben Hur" in the eve at the Moore Theatre. Grant doing chores.

Fri Jun 18: Downtown & out for ride by myself. Mr Kalso died this P.M.
Sat Jun 19: Warm dry & dusty. Crops need rain. Was out for a ride with Frank & came home this P.M. by train.

Fri Jun 25: Down to Terry's -- He was filling teeth. Not very pleasant work. Grant & Hilda came to night.
Sat Jun 26: Downtown & went to a Ball game with Grant. Some rain last night. I staid with Donnie while the folks went to the show.

Thu Jul 01:[margin: weather] All started for home in the Ford. Left Kirkland at 12.15 P.M. Had a fine trip & got home at 6.35. then went to Wilsons with Nettie. Made 102 miles with the machine to day on about six gallons of gasoline.

Sat Jul 03: Went to Bay View, LaConner & Wilsons. Was in Bay View in the P.M. to the celebration & took supper at McKenna's.
Sun Jul 04: Went to LaC & took dinner with Carter's. Grant sick with cold. In the P.M. took the Carter's out for a ride. Warm & pleasant.

Tue Nov 23:[margin: Rainy.] In LaC till 2.15 P.M. went with Frank to Anacortes & home via train at 6.30. Ground full of water & river high.
Wed Nov 24: Rain more last night & showery this A.M. Ed Stacey here for Mrs Wallace's things. Went up to Kalso's in the P.M. Roads very bad.
Thu Nov 25:[margin: Rainy.] Very bad month. Thanksgiving. Staid at home all day had dinner with Grant & Hilda and was thankful.

Fri Nov 26: Cold & raw but no rain. Grant & Fred hunting. Self reading, choring & making Donnie a wheelbarrow.
Sat Nov 27:[margin: Blowing & raining hard to night.] Windy & rainy. Disagreeable day. Reading Daval(?). Frank here with his launch. Took some timbers to Hat Island. Wrote to Geo & Eva this eve. Got a letter from E. this eve.
Sun Nov 28: Hard rain & warm wind all day. Went to the station & got the paper.
Mon Nov 29: Rain as usual. West wind and rough water in the P.M. Tides to day the highest on record for November. Eight inches short of the highest in '86 & '95, Skagit River very high. Land full of water.
Tue Nov 30: Skagit River broke the dyke in a number of places and is flooding the whole country. It will be the worst general flood on record. Communication by rail is cut off for the county.
December 1909
Wed Dec 01: Excitement everywhere, water also. Otto K's oats & warehouse went in the slough this A.M. Everything flooded from here to LaC & Samish. Beaver Marsh. In fact everything except Whitney Island. Our dyke broke about noon on the John Ball line.
Thu Dec 02: Water from 1 to 3 ft deep. Self went to Fredonia through the field in the boat. Otto moving hay & oats. Frank here yesterday & to day helping with his launch. Clear with cold north wind. Oats worth $30.00.
Fri Dec 03:[margin: Frost 24°] Frank went to Anacortes & then to LaC. Self went to Whitney in a boat. Water going down. Has fallen 4 to 6 in. Otto began on his dyke at the warehouse.
Sat Dec 04: Temp 22°.[margin: No mail since Monday.] Water falling but is covered with ice thick enough to carry one. Took a ride on a wheel to John Ball's Bridge over the ice. Freezing some to night temp 31 at 10 P.M. Sold 1000 sks oats to Geo Esary at $30.00. Anacortes branch of the G.N. a wreck from Telegraph slough to Rockport. Horses still at Byrons. Ida in Seattle.
Sun Dec 05:[margin: Frost 28°.] Pleasant. Water has fallen a foot now. Lots of boys skating this A.M. on the fields from Bay View. I took a short skate my self for the first time in 40 years. The last Cayuga Lake N. York state. Ida came to LaC last night per Str Fairhaven.
Mon Dec 06: Temp 28°. Water falling & weather cold. The horses at Byron's. Self down trying to shut up the old box but too much water but got it nearly stopped. Went to Whitney this P.M. & then began fixing the Rail Road.
Tue Dec 07: Water gone but the ice is with us. Grant helping Otto. Self went with Byron to Mount Vernon and saw the destruction below Avon. It is a fearful sight. South wind & not freezing.
Wed Dec 08: Cold east wind & some rain. Grant & self working on dyke towards Bay View putting in new lumber. Adrian Allen drowned near his home on Samish Island.
Thu Dec 09: Windy but no rain. Tides on the increase. Self & Grant worked on the dyke four hours. In the P.M. went for the mail & got the horses home from Byrons. Ice about gone but lots of water left yet.

Fri Dec 10:[margin: (4 hours)] Stormy day. Grant & self finished the lumber in the big dam towards Bay V. Went to the station for Ida's telescope in boat. A. Allen buried to day.
Sat Dec 11:[margin: High wind.] Stormy, wind & rain. Put the auto back in the shed & went to LaC in the P.M. Drove Old Nell. Skagit coming up again.
Sun Dec 12: In LaC all day. Very disagreeable day. River rising & a high tide. Lots of water everywhere over the flats.
Mon Dec 13: Still & pleasant to day. Came home. Ida also. Lots of water in the road. The Hertford calf got fast in the stack & can't walk yet. Otto trying to shut his break by the Jenne warehouses to night.
Tue Dec 14: Pleasant. Otto shut off the first break last night. Grant helped. Self choring. The calf getting better.
Wed Dec 15: Pleasant but cooler. Went to the station & set off the magazine list and a book for Mother. Water gradually going down, but still coming from Ball's field.
Thu Dec 16: The boat came for the oats & took 1008 sks. 408 sks of mine = $636.00 - 530 sks left to ??. Cool but pleasant. Otto & Fred working at the other line at the night on Telegraph Slough. 27 men.
Fri Dec 17: No rain but cool & clowdy. Otto shut out the water to day. Grant working last night & sleeping today. Self doing the chores and was over to see the dyke & to Whitney station. Was out to see the break in my field. Found an acre and 60 rods of break & land covered with water.
Sat Dec 18: Light frost. Grant on dyke last night for Otto. They have it in good shape now. Self doing chores. Foggy. Tides medium.
Sun Dec 19: At home except to the station. Ida & Hilda went to the Ridge in the P.M. Weather foggy & quiet. Frosty in the eve.
Mon Dec 20: Frost 28. Self putting down carpet & doing chores. Grant went to town to cash the oat dft. The Fidalgo here to get Peth's oats. Clear & pleasant all day. Ida fell off the step ladder. Dr. Palmer in LaC.
Tue Dec 21: Frost 25°. Clear & pleasant. The dredger in for Byron's hay. Grant brant hunting. Hay $20.00.
Wed Dec 22: Temp 23°. Ida & self went to Anacortes. Clear & cold. Fred went & brot his auto home.
Thu Dec 23: Temp 26° Cool and clowdy. Self went to B.V. & got oil, sugar &c and cut a Christmas tree. Looks like snow. Fred went to LaC with his Ford.
Fri Dec 24:[margin: Temp 28°. A tree for the children to night.] Went with Fred to LaC in launch saw the dredger working near Denny's trying to close a break in the dyke. Nettie came with us & John & family came also to spend Ch.
Sat Dec 25: Christmas. At home all day and all to dinner but Frank who was working for the dredger Co. A little snow this A.M.
Sun Dec 26: Pleasant. Temp 32°. Went to church & took Nettie home. John & P. went home. Pleasant.

Mon Dec 27: Temp 24°. Clear & cold. Self at home choring. Ida went to Wilsons. Grant went with Fred to get piles.
Tue Dec 28: Temp 24°. Went with Grant to LaConner & to see the dredger at Denny's. The job will cost over $7000.00. The water is still over the Brown Slough Country and also the Alanson Dist. Nothing doing yet to repair dykes on the River.
Wed Dec 29: Temp 30°. Even temp & no wind. Grant, Fred & self & team took the piles out of the water for stringers across the break in the Ball line dyke and hauled them to the break.
Thu Dec 30: South wind and pretty high tide. Cut up the spruce boom stick for piles & wood. Went to Whitney at night.
Fri Dec 31: Grant & Fred after piles. Self went to the Inspector of Election at B.V. It went dry 36 - 64 = 100 votes. Snowing most of the day. Snow 4 in deep. Thus endeth 1909. Frost at 12 M. 26°.
Sat Jan 01: Temp 22°. Coldest A.M. of the winter. 20° at Kalso's. Clear & cold. At home all day. Finished reading "Lewis Rand". Ida still at Wilson's. Election for County Dry as far as heard. LaConner dry. Mt Vernon wet. [margin: Fire in B.V. this A.M.]
Sun Jan 02: Temp 14° A.M. Clear & cold. Fine sleighing. Temp 18° at 7 P.M. 22° at 10 P.M. Went to Whitney & got the mail on wheel. Dr. Palmer & family in LaConner to day.
Mon Jan 03: Temp 24, pleasant & no wind. Nothing doing but chores & keeping warm. Rec'd a letter from Mrs Reed, Zero there.
Tue Jan 04: Frost 19°. Went to LaC with Grant & Hilda in the Auto. Self staid with Nettie.
Wed Jan 05: Frost 22°. Self in LaC helping Nettie move. Pretty good winter weather. Frank in Seattle. [margin: Tonight hog got out.]
Thu Jan 06: Frost 28°. Fixing the house. Went to meeting in the eve.
Fri Jan 07: Some warmer to day. Helping Nettie. Frank with the dredger folks.
Sat Jan 08: In LaC & went to the Comedy Concert to night. Cold south E. wind & snowing some to night.
Sun Jan 09: Ida came home. In LaC went to church morning & eve. Frost at night & one inch of snow to day.
Mon Jan 10: Frost about 28°. In LaC & went out to the Dredger in the P.M. Str Dredger blew out a steam pipe & scalded two men badly.
