Sat Jan 04: Strong south wind all day. Ida worse last night & to day. Dr. Howe here to see her. Carrie went to Burlington this eve.
Sun Jan 05: Heavy wind all night and the highest tide for thirteen years. Since Jan 12 '95 and that was four inches higher - also the one of Jan 24th '86.
Mon Jan 06: John & Pearl came up last night & are here yet. John went to town to day. Tide not so high by 8 in or so. Ida still sick abed. Windy A.M.
Tue Jan 07: Tide same as yesterday. John & Pearl went home this A.M. Ida downstairs for the first time in ten days, but is feeling tough. Put a new rudder rope in the "Sylph" Warm for the season. [margin: Began getting milk of W.P.]
Wed Jan 08: Highest tide of the winter so far. Tide 1 1/2 inches higher than Sunday A.M. Amos Ball's duke broke on Telegraph Slough. Heavy wind all night. Ida in bed to day.

Sat Jan 11: Pleasant. Fred came down & we fixed Grant's boat. Straightened the shaft & also packed the stuffing box. Went to Whitney to talk with Wilson about hay. He offered me $12.00 for a boat load and I refused to take it. [margin: Ida still in bed.]

Mon Jan 13: Frost 32°. Pleasant early but rainy P.M. Self went to Anacortes & got some underwear. Ida about the same.
Tue Jan 14: Pleasant & warm. Finish the Launch & went to the station. Choring.
Wed Jan 15: Pleasant. Sold Wilson a boat load of hay at $14.00 & Purcell 1055 lbs at 15.00. Fixed the boat wheel.
Thu Jan 16: Rain again last night & windy to day. Miss Nelson went to town for Nettie. Stitt got a load of hay.
Fri Jan 17: Pleasant, went to town with John Wilson. Everything in the market line very dull.
Sat Jan 18: Stormy part of the day. Went to Bay V & got oil "10 Gals" and got old Nell shod.
Sun Jan 19: Still wet & stormy. Nettie & Donald here. Very heavy wind in the P.M.
Mon Jan 20: Wind continued all night. A good tide but about 9 inches short of the one on the 8th. Went to town & took Nettie. Osberg sold hay & oats at $14.00 & $25.00.
Tue Jan 21: Made a fire to heat water expecting the butcher but he did not come. Not doing much but chores, went to the P.O & sent a letter to Grant & one to the Bank of C for a savings certificate. Weather pleasant to day.
Wed Jan 22: Fine day. Got up & started for the butcher at 6 A.M. Killed the hogs & Burger went home in the eve.
Thu Jan 23: Pleasant day. Burger here & finished up his job at 4.15. Placed $1000.00 on interest at the Bank of California, Seattle. Took a short ride in the Launch. Ida up some.
Fri Jan 24: Frost 30. Went to take Burger's things home & then to LaConner. Pleasant but cool.
Sat Jan 25: Took a launch ride up to Balls granary. Smoking the sausage.
Sun Jan 26: Frost 30°. Clear & pleasant. Self went to LaC. to church & then to Nettie's for dinner. The Carters there. Launch Harry here for Wilsons hay.
Mon Jan 27: The scow got snagged on the broken pile and they could not get the hay. Fred loading a car with hay. Took another launch ride.

Mon Jun 08: Clowdy but no rain. Pleasant P.M. Frank hauled a load of lumber in the P.M. Pearl came up & staid all night.
Tue Jun 09:[margin: Warm & pleasant.] Frank & Grant in Mt Vernon. Self fixed fence by the barn. Took June to Whitney. Poled the beans and mowed the lawn. had a few strawberries. Pearl & Nettie went to the W.C.T.U. Con at LaC.
Wed Jun 10:[margin: Warm & pleasant. River high.] Grant & Frank came home at 10 A.M. Frank hauled a load of dyke lumber. Ida & self went to W.C.T.U. meeting and Blanche White came home with us at 12 M.
Thu Jun 11:[margin: Warm & pleasant.] Grant & Frank hauled two loads of lumber for dyke this A.M. Loading on the scows in the P.M. & chored around some. Cultivated the potatos. Mrs W. went home.
Fri Jun 12:[margin: Pleasant.] Frank & self worked on the dyke 5 hours each & went after the pile driver in the P.M. or eve at 5 P.M.

Sun Jun 21: Went to Cottonwood Island. Wilson's & White's folks went along. Got home at 8 P.M. Pleasant, but some windy.

Thu Jun 25: All at Olgo(?) Orcas Island & went to the top of the mountain. Was at Moran's place & heard the pipe organ last night. Was wet going up the Mt. but it cleared off & gave us a fine view after noon. Came home at 8 P.M. & started with Frank for Langley. Staid at Utsalady from 12 to 4 A.M. Blanche & kids went with us.
Fri Jun 26: Heavy rain last night. Self with Frank in Everett & came home on the train. Ida sick abed.
Sat Jun 27:[margin: Pleasant day.] Ida in bed. Grant hauled a load of dyke lumber. Self picked berries, mowed the lawn & helped Grant cut up the dyke lumber. Hauling dyke lumber 2.00 Sawing & loading dyke lumber .75 Towing scow .50

Fri Jul 17: It cleared off to day & we got at the hay. Shook out the windrows & shocked up in the P.M. Grant cutting some in the P.M. Mason, Roberts, Blank, Clapper, Johnson & Willis working.
Sat Jul 18:[margin: Fine hay day.] Mowing & putting up. Crew same as yesterday. Began mowing the 18 acre piece. Fred got his new engine & put in the boat.
Sun Jul 19: Pleasant. At home all day. Every body about here working in the hay.

Fri Aug 21: Cutting oats. Weather fine. Crew same as yesterday. Self went to Mt Vernon on subpeona of the state tax Commission. went with Bessner in his auto. Shock baled hay selling at $8.00 to $9.00. Nearly everybody cutting oats.
Sat Aug 22: Cutting oats. Same crew. Frank helping in the house about 1/2 time. Finished the 37 acre piece at 5 P.M. & began on the 10 acre piece.
Sun Aug 23: Went to LaC to church. Ed Lovel read a sermon. Went with Ida up to Byron's in the P.M. Pleasant & some harvesting.
Mon Aug 24: Harvesting crew the same. Frank in the house 3/4. Finished across the road at 3.30. Cut around the 5 acre piece but had to quit at 4.30 for a light rain.
Tue Aug 25: Harvesting. Crew same. Began on the Whitney piece at 11 A.M. Cool & clowdy.
Wed Aug 26: Harvesting. Working on the Whitney piece. Oats not very heavy. Self mending sacks, dig potatos & mowing oats.
Thu Aug 27: Rain most all last night & some to day. Doing nothing.

Wed Sep 09: Threshing at Byron's & Kalso's. Clowdy but no rain except a shower early this A.M.
Thu Sep 10: Fine day. [margin: Gene Daniels buried] Began threshing here at 9 A.M. & got out 950 sks. Grain not turning out as well as expected.
Fri Sep 11: Strong N. wind with very wet fog. Threshing but very slow in the A.M. Moved and finished all but the Whitney piece. Have out about 1835 sks.
Sat Sep 12: Threshing till 3 P.M. very wet fog in the A.M. Got out 730 making 2565 for the crop. Broke a casting but moved to Osborne's and started up at about 4.30. Was offered $27.50 for the oats. Some sold at $27.00.
Sun Sep 13: Pleasant. Machine at Osbornes. Got out about 800 sks. Grain tough. Self & Nettie went to Bay view to church.
Mon Sep 14: Machine at Osbornes. Light rain in the A.M. but not enough to stop threshing. Ida & self went to LaC & took dinner at Carter's. Clowdy.
Tue Sep 15: Machine at Crumrine's. Fine day. Self choring & went to Ballingers & bot 100 sks seed oats. Was over to the machine in the P.M.

Tue Nov 03:[margin: Windy.] Presidential Election. Went to B.V. to take tickets & vote. Johnson went and took Charley & Prince to get their shoes taken off. Johnson hauling manure in the P.M. Heard Taft was elected at 10 P.M.
Wed Nov 04: Working on dike 4 hours, self & Johnson. He went to Wilson's to take Ida in the P.M. Self went to Mt Vernon with Bessner to hear election news. County all Rep.
Thu Nov 05:[margin: Warm & pleasant.] Self & Johnson working on dyke 8 hours each, except a while in the A.M. when there was a light rain. Mr Pratt here to night for Children's Home.
Fri Nov 06:[margin: Weather fine.] Self & Johnson dyking 6 hours each. Grant home this eve. Have put a scow load of dirt on the dyke each day for the past three days. Tides just right. Total dyke work this week 64 hours or $16.00.

Sun Nov 08: Pleasant day & the roads fine. I went to church on wheel in LaC. Mr James Gaches was stricken with heart failure & died this eve at 5 oclock after acting as Pall Bearer at Mrs Tolbars funeral at Pleasant Ridge.
Mon Nov 09:[margin: Pleasant.] Self & Johnson dyking 6 hours each. Then loaded the Rene with hay for Wilson Feed Co.
Tue Nov 10:[margin: Fine ] Ida started for Tacoma with Donald this A.M. Self & Johnson at the dyke 2 hours each. Then finished the day picking up wood with the scow.
Wed Nov 11:[margin: weather.] Mrs Dewey sick to day. Self working in the house & went to Bay View. Johnson hauling wood from Marihughs.
Thu Nov 12: Measured the Peth line fence. Total distance 2626 ft from the road to the corner in my field 1131 ft. My half 1263. According to deed it is 1251 ft to said corner and I should build 127 ft more to make 1/2 total length of line 2756. Self & Johnson working on dyke 8 hours each. Pleasant. John came & got June to plow.
Fri Nov 13:[margin: Frost. Pleasant.] Clapper had the team to go to Burlington. Johnson tearing down the Peth line fence. Self went to James Gaches funeral which was the largest I ever saw in LaConner. Netties number 819 South K, Tacoma.
Sat Nov 14:[margin: Frost. Pleasant.] Johnson working at the fence taking out posts and hauling away the old stuf & taking out new posts. Self went to Mount Vernon.

Sun Nov 15:[margin: Frost, warmer at night.] Went to Bay View to church. Heard the new preacher Mr Ball and took dinner with the Howe's.
Mon Nov 16: Strong south wind all day. Self & Johnson setting fence posts in the Peth line fence.
Tue Nov 17: Rain last & showery today. Johnson hauled a load of rocks by the hay barn water tank and went to the Jacobs Mill for lumber in the P.M. Rector got 2460 lbs hay on Stitts acct.
Wed Nov 18:[margin: No rain. River high.] Self & Johnson finished the Peth fence.
Thu Nov 19:[margin: Showery.] Johnson hauled a load of rocks & hauled manure in the P.M. Self went to B.V. & got Nell shod and fixed a cow stall in the P.M. Also wrote up pioneer minutes. Amt in the dyke Treasury at this time $133.78.
Fri Nov 20:[margin: Showery.] Johnson hauling manure & doing chores. Self filing saw(Franks) & reading.
Sat Nov 21:[margin: Windy & showery.] Sef fixing window to chicken house. Grant came home and Sydney Stacey here. Johnson hauling manure & cleaning up around the straw stack.
Sun Nov 22:[margin: Sydney went home.] Windy & rainy. At home all day. Wrote to Ida & read also went to the P.O. just night.
Mon Nov 23: Windy but no rain. Johnson hauling out straw. Self sawing up a pile for wood. Grant hunting quail & towed the scow load of wood up home.
Tue Nov 24: Pleasant. Light frost. [margin: Grant went to Wilson's.] Johnson hauling wood from the scow and hauling dirt in the P.M. to fill up hole by the hay barn. Self helped unload wood & piled it.
Wed Nov 25:[margin: Frost 30°. Pleasant but cool.] E.E. Stacey here for hay & got 2690 lbs. Johnson hauling dirt and leveling up holes. (Ida came this eve.)
Thu Nov 26:[margin: Frost 29°] Very pleasant day for Thanksgiving. Ida, self & Mrs. Dewey went down to Clyde Howe's for dinner & self went to Thanksgiving services at the church.
Fri Nov 27:[margin: Frost.] Self & Johnson making fence around the straw stack & cutting up piles for wood in the P.M.
Sat Nov 28:[margin: Frost.] Johnson pulling mangolds & cutting wood. Self & Grant went to Anacortes in the "Sylph". Weather very fine.
Sun Nov 29: Rain most all day. Ed Stacey here in the eve.
Mon Nov 30:[margin: Frost 30°.] Johnson cutting wood & doing chores. Stacey had the team to go for Everett Wallace's thinks. Ida & self went to LaC.

Wed Dec 02:[margin: Frost 29°.] Johnson hauling dirt in the slough by the Purdy granary piece. Ida & self went with Fred in boat down to Wilson's. Clear & cold. Was over to Edison this eve.
Thu Dec 03:[margin: Frost 26°.] Came home on the wheel. Clear & cold. Johnson hauling dirt. the new phonograph came and I set it up.
Fri Dec 04:[margin: Frost 27°, still cold.] Johnson went to Bay View and got the shoes taken off Queen. In the P.M. hauling dirt. Self went to town & got the wheel fixed.

Sun Dec 06:[margin: Frost 28°] Frost staid on the trees all day. Foggy. Grant & Don went to Pearls. Ira brot June home.
Mon Dec 07: Warmer with mist & rain at night. Johnson quit today. We went to LaC. Dr. Palmer went home this eve.

Wed Dec 09: Light frost. Not doing much but chores. Rain some through the night.
Thu Dec 10: Light frost but pleasant to day. Grant went to town in his boat. Am reading "The Spenders".
Fri Dec 11: Reading & doing chores & not much else. Strong south wind. Began making a cover for Grant's boat.
Sat Dec 12:Highest tide of the year so far. It is about three inches short of the one last year. Working at the boat cover. Very heavy wind. Roy Crumrine's boat got loose.
Sun Dec 13:[margin: Cold & windy.] Self went to LaC and heard Mr Dutton of the Good Templars. Spent the P.M. with the Carters.
Mon Dec 14: Not doing much but chores. Ida came home. John Wilson also got home from Idaho. Grant went to Anacortes.
Tue Dec 15: Self & Grant working at the boat cover. Cold south wind.
Wed Dec 16:[margin: Pleasant, light frost.] Fixed the hole in Roy's boat and fixed the bow piece on Grant's boat. Roy here to dinner.
Thu Dec 17:[margin: Frost 26] Mrs Howe & father here to day. Not doing much but blackening stove. Clear & pleasant.
Fri Dec 18:[margin: Frost 26°.] Clear & pleasant. Ida & self went to town. Oats coming up.
Sat Dec 19:[margin: Frost 24°] Coldest A.M. this winter so far. Put up stove in the parlor, &c, &c. Grant brant hunting. Sold the oats to Geo Esary for Galbreath Bacon & Co. for $30.00 per ton. 2100 sks.
Sun Dec 20:[margin: Light frost.] Cold south wind. Self went to church at Bay View. John & Pearl here to dinner.
Mon Dec 21: Ida & self went to Anacortes. Got a suit & watch, &c. Clowdy but no rain.
Tue Dec 22:[margin: Some rain last night.] Self went to La Conner. Got a Bank Certificate of Deposit for $1000. To draw interest at 4% from today.
Wed Dec 23:[margin: Rainy A.M.] Doing chores, fixing for Christmas & got a tree.
Thu Dec 24: No rain but clowdy. The Dredger here for Fred's hay. Grant helping load. Self shoring & fixing for Christmans. Frank & Nettie came this eve and we had the tree at 9 P.M. Mrs Howe here helping fix the tree. [margin: John & Pearl here.]
Fri Dec 25: Christmas. Stormy day with west wind & high tide. Samish dike broke at Wilson's barn. John & Grant went to Samish to work on dike.

Fri Dec 25: Christmas concluded. All the family here to dinner. Had roast turkey & brant with oyster soup. A bad south west wind all the afternoon. The Samish dyke gave way in several places and C. Marihugh's dike has a break in it.
Sat Dec 26: Windy & showery. John & Grant came home this eve. Tide not as high as yesterday.
Sun Dec 27: Rainy last night & some to day. Frank started for Tacoma at home all day. John & Pearl went home this P.M.
Mon Dec 28: Another windy night & some rain. Tide pretty high & a moderate west wind all day. Walked over the dike and found it all night except one place which was washing out some. Found "Old Maud" sick & sent for Dr Phinney who got here in time to see her die. The Misses Stacey here to day.
Tue Dec 29:[margin: Frost.] Pleasant. Grant & I buried old Maud. Ed Stacey here & took the girls home. Ida & Nettie went to Bay View.
Wed Dec 30:[margin: Frost 32°] Ida & Nettie went to town LaC. Self reading I Abroad. Grant brant hunting. Mr & Mrs Wright came this eve.
Thu Dec 31:[margin: Frost 30 eve.] Spent the day visiting with the Wrights. Pleasant weather. Roll Call meeting to day at La C. B. C. Mr Dunlap buried at B.V. The Wrights started for home on the eve train. Thus endeth 1908. Heard of the Great Earth quake in Italy.
Fri Jan 01: [margin: Light frost.] Self & Ida went down to John's & staid all night. Cool & a snow squall in the P.M. Nettie & Donald went also.
Sat Jan 02: Rain last night & some to day. Ida & self came home & Nettie went to Bow and started for Tacoma.
Sun Jan 03: Rainy A.M. Ida & self went to church at LaC. and staid the P.M. with the Carter's.
Mon Jan 04: [margin: Frost.] Self went to Anacortes & got ten Pho Records & got my watch. About one inch of snowfall and it turned cold very fast in the P.M. Mercury at 19 at bed time.
Tue Jan 05: [margin: Temp 12] Clear with north wind. Not doing much but tending fire. Grant & Fred branting.
Wed Jan 06: Temp 11 at Kalsos, 12 here & 10 at Wilsons and reported to be zero in Bellingham. Strong wind to day from the north. The Fidalgo in for Crumine's & Osborne's oats. Began reading "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine".
Thu Jan 07: [margin: Temp 10] Very cold all day. Highest ther. to day 13. Put the horses in to night for the first. Temp. 10 at bed time. Mrs Jenne died to night. No signs of any change.
Fri Jan 08: [margin: Temp 10 at 6 AM. Temp 9 at 10 PM.] Mercury rose to 17° once today but Cold winter is still with us. One chicken died from frost. Began reading "The Riverman".
Sat Jan 09: [margin: Temp 13° at 6 A.M.] and snowing. This is some winter. A little warmer to day, up to 22° noon.
