Fri Jan 01: Opened will(?). A pleasant A.M. but rain before noon. Grant went to LaC with Chris Esary & then home with him. I went over to Frank White's and staid to dinner & till 4 P.M. Frank & Nettie spent the day at home.
Sat Jan 02: Clowdy but no rain. Spent the day at home choring & reading. Rec'd a letter from Ida. Grant still away. The past December has been about the warmest & finest I remember of in Washington.
Sun Jan 03: Windy & Clowdy. Frank Wright & Grant started for Tacoma at noon.
Mon Jan 04: Showery - Doing chores - & reading. Fixed fence down where the hay balers tore it down. Wrote to Ida in the eve. Tides not high for the season.
Tue Jan 05: Showery & clowdy but not very cold. Doing chores, reading and went after the clothes.
Wed Jan 06: Went after the sugar & to LaConner. Settled up with Goldsmith. Sent M.O. to Laird & Lee, Chicago. Calkins paid his interest and I got a money order with it. Weather damp. Fulk just sold his oats for $21.00.
Thu Jan 07: Warm wind all day but no rain. Cut wood some, fixed platform by the barn. Bot mining stock of the agent who was here with Mr. Oslong. A letter from Ida.

Sat Jan 09: Threatening storm & in the P.M. a cold drizzling rain with a few flakes of snow. Cut & split wood some and fixed up the barn some. Went to the station in the P.M. Put the horses in the barn tonight for the first this winter. Highest tide since November on the 8th but it was not very high.
Sun Jan 10: Warm & spring again. At home all day except going to the station to get the new of the wreck of the Clallam which occurred Fri night in the strait west of Lopez Island. Nearly 60 people drowned & the boat sunk.
Mon Jan 11:Nettie Self went to B.V. and took the washing down to Jorgensons. Sent for the R. of R's. Rainy part of the day. A letters from Geo & Ida.
Tue Jan 12: Rain nearly all last night & some today. Fixing "Foonders" stall & doing the chores.
Wed Jan 13: Nettie went to Whatcom. Self did chores & went to LaConner with Mrs. Kalso. Stormy, heavy rain last night. Sullivan got his leg broken.
Thu Jan 14: At home alone all day. Readying & doing chores. Rained lots more last night. This is a decidely wet month and also very warm so far.
Fri Jan 15: Dito yesterday. Clowdy but no rain. Mailed a letter to Geo. Heard Bessners(?) other horse died. Nettie in Whatcom. The first half of Jan gone without a frost.
Sat Jan 16: Clowdy & Windy. Nettie came home on the 9 oclock train. Did the chores & went to Bay View in the P.M. Took 90 lbs bacon to sell. Osborne got 8 sks oats & paid his pasture bill. Fred Kalso had his dyke Com. Bond fixed up.
Sun Jan 17: Cold & windy but no rain till eve. Self & Nettie went to B.V. to go to church but Mr Owens was not able to be there. Wrote to Ida. Grant not home yet.
Mon Jan 18: Sent check to the hospital which pays to Feb 1st. Began to snow this AM and kept it up most of the time till 7 oclock and began to grow cold.
Tue Jan 19: Mercury at 16° degrees & snow about 4 inches on the level. Clear & cold all day. Grant came to LaConner & I had to go after him. Got a letter from Geo. stating he had been sick a week. Avery Browning & Charles Gardner dead.
Wed Jan 20: Warmer M at 28° and snowing again. Snowed part of the day & turned to rain in the eve. Doing chores & not much else.
Thu Jan 21: Kalso & Stearns sold their oats at $21.00. Steamer Swinomish here after them. Spent most of the day reading.
Fri Jan 22: A fine mist most of the day. Doing nothing but chores & reading. Some snow on the ground yet and the ground full of water. Heard Mr. Seabert was dead.

Sun Jan 24: Self & Nettie went to the M.E. Church dedication and to the Bap Church meetin. Hear Rev. E. M. Randall preach. Took dinner with the Carters. Pleasant day.
Mon Jan 25: Pleasant. Sent a letter to Geo and to Ida. Oats worth from $21.50 to $22.00.
Tue Jan 26: Grant went to B.V. & got Nell shod. Self up to Osbornes to see about getting D. Osborne. Also saw Price about wood.
Wed Jan 27: Went to La C. with Nettie also went to a Telephone meeting. Heard from Ida that she had another back set. Good oats worth $22.00. Clear & pleasant.
Thu Jan 28: Went up to Kalsos & got dyke warrant signed. Then went down with Otto to the Bal. Co. dock to see a pile driver.
Fri Jan 29: Pleasant day. Grant went coon hunting. Self, Fred Kalso & Peth went clam digging. Got home at 11-30. Peth stuck in the mud.
Sat Jan 30: At home all day doing chores &c. Frank Wright came. Fulk was here to pay me Abbott's threshing bill. Self went to Whatcom. Drama in Bay View.
Sun Jan 31: Spent the day in Whatcom and came to A. at night. Ida worse than ever since living in Whatcom.
February 1904
Mon Feb 01: Very pleasant and frosty in the A.M. Self & Grant got home. Began moving trees and bushed from the orchard. Frank & Grant working in the P.M,
Tue Feb 02: Working in the orchard. Transplanted 14 trees and pulled up the bal. Pleasant.
Wed Feb 03: Clowdy & light show in the A.M. Sent tax check to Mt. Vernon. Working in the orchard cleaning up brush and moving fence & fenced the raspberries. Rain some towards night.
Thu Feb 04: Worked tearing down the fence east side of the orchard in the A.M. Rain in the P.M. & the boys began washing harness.
Fri Feb 05: Rainy most of the day. Cut up & split a log for posts and worked at the harness the bal of the time.
Sat Feb 06: Still working at the harness. Rained most all last night. Land soaking wet. Snow some. Boys cutting wood some in the P.M.
Sun Feb 07: Snowing a good part of the day. All at home. M at 22°.
Mon Feb 08: Cold & snowing considerable last ight. Grant & Frank washing & oiling harness collars &c. Self went to the station & got a M & W order. Lee Bradley here to dinner. Coldest day of the season.

Thu Feb 11: Everett went home. Grant & Frank hauling manure in the A.M. Rain in the P.M. Strong S.W. wind in the eve. One of the worst for many years.
Fri Feb 12: N. & F. went to Neeley's. The boys hauling manure. Self fixing up fences after the wind and choring. Dug and grated some horse radish.
Sat Feb 13: A letter from Ida. Self & boys building fence by the old orchard lot. Grant went to B.V. & got the washing.
Sun Feb 14: Self went to LaConner to church & then called a pastor Rev. Mr. Pace. Cool & no rain.
Mon Feb 15: Bad weather. Showery all day. Put wire on the fence. Put 5 scks feed oats in the barn. The boys cleaned out the old house & cut wood.
Tue Feb 16: Rainy day not doing very much. Marc Hanna died last night. A letter from Ida. She has made different arrangements about coming home.
Wed Feb 17: Frank & Grant hauling our straw from the stack. No rain but windy. Self went to LaC. with John Wilson. Nothing new. Hay dull at 8 to 10 dollars. Oats 22 to 23 for the best.
Thu Feb 18: Arthur Darcy here. The boys hauling straw. Self went out to Gorton's mill. In the PM. stopped a muskrat hole and fixed a gate by the old orchard to 18 acre field.
Fri Feb 19: The boys hauling straw. Finished this side & began across the road. Self trimming up trees & bushes in the yard & sawed up the orchard tree wood. Clowdy & shower towards night.
Sat Feb 20: The boys hauling straw in the A.M. & went to down in the P.M. Rainy P.M.
Sun Feb 21: Rain hard in the A.M. & some in P.M. Pearl & John came up. Wrote to Ida.
Mon Feb 22: Grant brot the washing down. Frank rigged up the wagons & in the P.M. then went to Gortons mill for lumber to side up the hay shed. Plowing & windy all day. The folks went to Crumrines to a party in the Eve. Hard rain in the night.
Tue Feb 23: Rainy a good part of the day. All working on the hay shed putting on lumber. Land full of water.
Wed Feb 24: Grant working on the telephone line. Frank choring. Went to the mill to order more lumber and white washed the fruit trees.
Thu Feb 25: Frost this A.M. Frank cutting up rails & we worked on the dyke some. Fixing lumber near the hay barn. Grant working on the line.

Mon Feb 29: 1 inch snow. Self and Ida came home from Whatcom at 9 AM. (She bays putting.) The boys not doing much to day but chores.

Tue Mar 01: More snow & light frost. Not doing much in the A.M. The boys finished nailing boards on the hay barn in the P.M. Self reading. Frank & Grant went to La C. in the eve. N. also went. Miss D. Osborne started today.
Wed Mar 02: L.A. supper in B.V. The boys hauling dirt in the slough out by the hay barn slough. Self not doing much.
Thu Mar 03: Took the plow up to Kalso's to get them fixed with jointers. Self helping fix them. The boys hauled dirt some. Nettie & Frank went to LaC. in the eve for basketball.
Fri Mar 04: Strong S. wind all day. Tried the breaking plow. It works very well. Frank plowing. Grant went to Samish to shoot geese. Pearl & son came up and staid all night. Sod land in fair order but stubble very wet.
Sat Mar 05: Still blowing and some rain last night. Ida in bed to day with a cold. Frank plowing till 2.30. Quit for rain. Grant down to Wilson's yet. Frank, Nettie & D. went to LaConner to see basket ball.
Sun Mar 06: Mrs Regenwetter died. At home all day. John & Pearl here but went home at 4 P.M. Ida in bed.
Mon Mar 07: Grant went & got Fred's plow & took a load of feed oats to Jennes to be ground. Frank plowing in the P.M.
Tue Mar 08: Showery Grant & Frank breaking in the Whitney field. Self went to Mrs. R's funeral at LaC. Went with Otto.
Wed Mar 09: The boys plowing. Self choring. Mrs Nynook buried. [margin: ]
Thu Mar 10: Showery & windy. Barometer lowest I ever saw it 29 1/10. The boys plowing.
Fri Mar 11: The boys plowing till 4 P.M. & quit for rain. Strong wind all last night & to day.
Sat Mar 12: Still showery & windy. Plowing some in the fore noon. Finished the Whitney piece all but three round on the head loud(?). The Denner here for oats sold. Geo Andres 700 sks at $23.00. Showery as usual. The young folks went to a party at B.V. in the eve. Land still very wet & not much prospect of plowing stubble.

Sun Apr 03: Easter Sunday. Self & Frank went to LaConner to church. No rain but not very pleasant.
Mon Apr 04: Frank disking. Grant plowing but it is too wet to plow.
Tue Apr 05: Rain again last night. F. & G. hauling manure. Self working at Nettie's room taking up matting & painting.
Wed Apr 06: Grant not working in the A.M. Frank hauling dirt in the A.M. & they were papering Netties room in the P.M. Pleasant. Cheatum sent a message that he would take the oats at $25.00.
Thu Apr 07: Finished the room & in the P.M. Frank disking. In the P.M. Grant plowed the gardens & rolled the sod in the orchard. Self went to LaConner & Miss Brownton(?) came home with me for a visit. Lots of farmers plowing but the land is none to dry.
Fri Apr 08: Frank disking across the road. Grant plowing in the A.M. - Self too Miss Brownton(?) to Calkins in the P.M. Fine day.
Sat Apr 09: Another drying day. Grant plowing Frank disk 1/2 plowing 1/2 Self planted some vegetable in the A.M. & went to the primary meeting in the P.M. Grant in Bay View all night.

Wed Apr 13: Plowing with two teams. Warm & dry. Planted sweet pears & other garden stuff & set out some cabbage plants. They finished the 15 acre piece.

Tue Apr 19: Drizzling rain all day but the kept on plowing - began across the road - Meadows looking fine. Set out the 2 bushes of roses.
Wed Apr 20: Still drizzling. The boys went to town in the A.M. Ewing & Peth plowing but it is mostly(?) wet to work. Self mended sack and counted up the oats left. Found 110 sks. besides Elmer's & my seed. The boys plowing in the P.M. Self fixing the box to dip oats.
Thu Apr 21: Rainy again this A.M. They went out to plow about 8.30
Fri Apr 22: Rain all A.M. & most the PM. Not plowing. Ewing plowing. Dipped 30 sks oats in the PM. (diary says Fri 22.)Both teams plowing.
Sat Apr 23: Grant plowing. Frank disking the sod the second time after seeder.
Sun Apr 24: Went to B.V. to church. No rain but clowdy.
Mon Apr 25: Fred K. seeding. Grant plowed. Frank harrowing the 18 acre piece. Cold north wind.
Tue Apr 26: Self rolling 1/2. Both of the boys plowing 3/4 day, then began harrowing sod after the disk. Self dipped 30 sks more seed oats. Strong cold north wind. Land drying out too fast & caking.
Wed Apr 27: Two teams harrowing. Self choring & working around the house.
Thu Apr 28: The boys harrowing 1/2 Rainy P.M. Mr Owen's folks here in the evening & staid all night.
Fri Apr 29: Both teams harrowing in the AM. & one in PM. finished rough harrowing & the sod after the disk. Grant seeding in the P.M. Self rolling rough land to mash clods. Owens went home.

Wed May 04: Grant seeded the haybarn piece. Frank harrowing across the road. Cold, drying wind. About 38 acres left to seed yet.

Wed Jun 01: Fine rain last night 1/2 inch. Frank & Nettie married. About 50 people here all told. Rev Mr Pace did the work. They started for Seattle in the Eve via Anacortes.
Thu Jun 02: Mr McGinnis folks here. Cleaning up after the shin-dig. Nice weather.

Mon Aug 01: Hauling hay to Osborne 6 loads. Chellis(?), Frank, Clark & Grant & three teams. Self feeling tough up most of the night last night. Began framing the tank by the Granary.
Tue Aug 02: Hauling hay to Walker & Osborne. They also hauled posts from Gortons 95. Self working on tank.

Thu Aug 18: Dry & smoky. Began on the tank. Frank went to La C. for sacks in the P.M. Will have to haul water next week. Pastures very short.
Fri Aug 19: Self & Frank working at the tank. Warm & dry. Al Risbell died this A.M. from heart failure after three weeks run of typhoid fever.
Sat Aug 20: Turned the tank over to put the 2x4 stuff on it. The campers hame home today at noon.
Sun Aug 21: Self went to Risbell's funeral at Mt Vernon. A large crowd present. Dry & dusty.
Mon Aug 22: Clark came home to day. Frank went for lumber. Grant helping on the tank some in the A.M. & to LaC. in the P.M. Self & Frank finished the tank & putting up eave troughs.

Mon Dec 12:[Nettie]Two of Lee's friends stayed with us last night. There were five men over here hunting. Rained nearly all night, but fair today.

Fri Dec 23: At home to day. Grant hunting. Frank went to town. Rainy most of the day. Sawed a wheel barrow load of wood. The first work in ten weeks.
Sat Dec 24: Self went to town. Light frost. The boys home. Self went to town. Called on Tillinghasts. Pearl & John came up and staid all night. John, Grant & Frank went to the tree at Bay View this eve. Lots of people plowing.
Sun Dec 25: Cool day but no rain. Blanch & Marguerite White here also Clyde Howe. Had a pleasant time.
Mon Dec 26: Cool but pleasant. John & Pearl went home at 11 A.M. All went to Peth's for C Dinner.
Tue Dec 27: Grant & Frank hauled two load of wood. In the P.M. Self & Frank fixed a musk rat hole. Grant went to Wilson's. Frank to LaC in the eve.

Wed Dec 28: Frank hauled wood 2 loads. Self took a walk down the dyke & fixed up the machine shed. Clowdy & showery. Mercury at 44°. Grant at Pearls.
Thu Dec 29: Strong south wind and the highest tide for ten years. It ran over the dyke in some places and broke Arie Balls dyke in two places. Moon full a week ago. Highest tide dur on the 26th according to tide table. Frank hauled a load of wood in the A.M. We fixed a rat hole and some dyke in the P.M. Tide 1 1/2 inch short of the big tides of 1886 & 1895. Mrs. Tillinghast here to day & to night. Grant at Pearl's.
Fri Dec 30: Hard wind all night and another tide to day within four inches of the tide yesterday. Self went to town to Roll call meeting and took Mrs. T. home. LaConner flooded.
Sat Dec 31: Frank hauled a load of wood & did the chores. Self mended the rocking chair & fixed up for killing pigs.
Sun Jan 01: Stormy & windy. Self went over to Frank White's. Wrote to Geo in the eve.
Mon Jan 02: Went to LaConner with Otto Kalso to a telephone meeting. Weather still warm. Myners wants 225 lbs. seed oats.
Tue Jan 03: Strong west wind. Self, Frank & Fred Kalso put a scow load of dirt on the dyke in the A.M.
Wed Jan 04: Frank & Nettie went to town in the P.M. Mr & Mrs Peth here this P.M.
Thu Jan 05: Nice pleasant day - Killed the pigs this A.M. & Fred Kalso helped - & we got through before noon. Began building a new chicken yard.
Fri Jan 06: Lovely day. Temp 45 noon 37 A.M. John Wilson got hurt yesterday P.M. Ankle sprained. Cut up the pigs. Cut lard and made sausage.
Sat Jan 07: Frank at B.V. Self reading and fixed a shovel to work on the dyke with. Light rain in the A.M. but pleasant P.M.
Sun Jan 08: Frank & Nettie went to Bay V. last night and from there to Johns and are there to day. Steamer Edison here for Krutzmans oats, Majarus oats & John's oats. Clear & pleasant. Krutzmans weighed 21869 = $284.29 Majurus weighed 23210 = 301.73 Wilsons weighed 12321 = 160.17 Mercury at 26° this AM
Mon Jan 09: Mercury at 24° Clear & pleasant. Frank helped unload scows on dyke two hours. Went & took the washing up & did the chores. John killed his hogs.
