Sun Jan 05: Grant getting worse with high fever. Self went to town for medicine in the eve.
Mon Jan 06: Got Lee to go for Dr. for Grant this morning at 4 A.M. He is no better yet.
Tue Jan 07: Dr. Appleby here again to see Grant and it turns out he has smallpox. He is very sick and ????as with fever of 104. We are now quarantined indefinitely. Weather warm with frequent rains.
Wed Jan 08: Dr. here & went for his medicine. Grant about the same. Doing nothing but chores & taking care of him.
Thu Jan 09: Grant about the same. Dr. here again. Mr Williamson came to help take care of him. [margin: Steamer Transport sunk in the bay with a loss of 1500 sks oats.]
Fri Jan 10: Grant doing pretty well but is very sore. Frost. The Clan McDonald here for hay for Elling. He got 25 1/2 tons according to Simpsons tally. Lee helped tally.

Thu Jan 30: Wind SE. Snowed most of the night. There is almost 9 in of snow on the level. Wind turned to north again last night and it is growing colder to day. Mr W. busy shoveling paths. Invalids doing well. Mer 22° or there abouts at night.

Thu Feb 27: Conrad hitched up to start the plow and while I was fixing the Coulter the team started the plow which caught my foot and cut a bad gash in the left side of the left foot. Set a telegram for Jackson who came and sowed it up and dressed the wound. Lee was here and Elmer came soon after for fan his seed oats. He & Conrad fanned oats 3/4 day & finished his oats.
Fri Feb 28: C. & Elmer fanning oats & finished mine. Self in bed with a cut foot which is very sore & painful. Sat. Mr. Ferguson & Mr & Mrs Redfin here to see me.

Thu Jul 31: Rain some last night & shower today about noon. Hauled hay 1/4 8 loads in old barn, 62 all told in old barn & 107 in both barns. Perry hauled a load of water from Bells in the P.M. Dodger here for the rest of Byron's hay. Clowdy & damp tonight. Ed Crumrine & other here from Bay View this eve.

Fri Aug 01: Hauling in hay. 37 loads. 5 in old barn 32 in the shed. Old barn full and has 67 loads. Shed has 45 + 32 = 77. Total to night 144.
Sat Aug 02: Haling in hay. 21 in the shed & 18 in the stable. Total in the shed 98 all told 183 in my barns. 19 sold (202). Crew same as yesterday. Fine weather.
Sun Aug 03: Pleasant & dry. Perry & Mrytle went to LaConner. Self went to church in B.V. Mrs Peth & Mrs Sook(?) here this P.M. also Thompson to see about running the engine.
Mon Aug 04: Chellis, Perry & Smith hauling hay for Osborne & one load for Gorton. Self fixing up barn & choring. Was out to Gorton's to get some lumber for water trough. Warm & dry.

Wed Aug 06: Bay View crowd camping at Guemes Island. Grant went. Self & Perry making stock tank & fixing up fence down by the well. Very dry. Oats ripening fast.
Thu Aug 07: Perry went to Burlington. Self fixed up the hay ropes & in the P.M. was over to Fulks. He hired Martin Felton for head feeder. Dry & hot. Heard that Tracy had killed himself on Tuesday night last.
Fri Aug 08: Perry hauling water in the A.M. Self out to Gorton's Mill. Both went to town in the P.M. Horse races in town to day. Miss Olive McGinnis here. Brot home the twine 200 lbs. Hot & dry.
Sat Aug 09: Not doing much but chores. Self went to town to see a game of Ball in the P.M. It was N.G. Charley Moores baby [died] yesterday evening. Social in Bay View to night. Perry there with his phonograph. Sold the old wagon & tank to Gorton for 300 ft furring.

Tue Sep 02: Self, Perry & Grant went to the gravel pit & cleaned out the old well. Fillou & Thompson here. Set the machine in the P.M. & threshed out 26 sks. Fine weather. Clarks came back from LaC.
Wed Sep 03: Began threshing at Kalso's and had to quit for rain at 4 P.M. Had poor luck & bork the socker & lubricator glass. Engineer no good. Self went to Anacortes to convention. Rain quite a shower. The women went to Seattle via Anacortes. Nettie & Hope came home.
Thu Sep 04: Pleasant but pretty wet for threshing in the A.M. Threshing at Kalso's & Bryrons in the P.M. Let Thompson go & got Geo Alverson in the P.M. Self helping.

Sat Sep 06: Mrs Stearns here. Finished threshing at Byron's at a quarter to three, began on mine at 20 min past three. Got out 307 sks fine oats. Looks like rain.

Thu Dec 18: Self went to town. Frost. Grant & W Peth worked on dyke 5 hours. Ida still sick abed. Dr. Howe here to see her.
Fri Dec 19: Warmer. Tinkering around & sawing wood. Grant hunting and thats all.
Sat Dec 20: Grant hunting & went to town in the P.M. Ida sick abed yet. Self choring.
Sun Dec 21: Pleasant & not very cold. John & Pearl here. Ida no better.
Mon Dec 22: Clowdy & a few light showers of rain. Anna went to town. Grant hunting. Self choring. Mr. Stearns here and bot 160 sks (8 tons seed oats at 20.00 per ton)
Tue Dec 23: Lysle Wallace buried today. I went to the funeral. Cool and feels like snow. Bot a ton of seed oats of Gaches at 25.00.
Wed Dec 24: Not doing much but chores. Ida about the same. Very windy. Grant & Anna went to the Christmas tree in Bay View. Wrote to Geo. Mercury at 54°.
Thu Dec 25: Christmas at Padilla. Very quiet. Grant & Anna away. Everett Wallace here to dinner.
Fri Dec 26: Rainy part of the day. Ida about as usual but was downstairs. Began reading "Marieall". Grant went to Williamsons to party. Fixed up the wagon & the plows to go to town.
Sat Dec 27: The Northern Light here for hay for Zewerkh and took 45 tons 1345 lbs. Raining slightly again.
Sun Dec 28: Cool south wind and light rain. Light frost last night.
Mon Dec 29: New Moon. Self & Grant went to LaConner & got the seed oats, sk. sugar, sk. flour & pair gum boots also took the plows up to be fixed. John Ball's flume gate gave way to day and part of his land is flooded.
Tue Dec 30: Rain this A.M. John Ball's flume still out of fix & his ranch nearly flooded. Very heavy wind all last night but not a very high tide.
Wed Dec 31: Ida very sick to day. Dr. Howe here to see her. Pearl & John came & staid all night.
Thu Jan 01: John & Pearl here & Frank White's folks. Clowdy but not much rain. They went home at 3.30.
Fri Jan 02: Rain in the eve. Franks folks went home. Mr Bennett here from Ill. Went to town in the P.M. Georgia Carter came home with me.
Sat Jan 03: Rain all last night. Grant went to town to take Mrs. Carter. Mr Bennett went with Fred Kalso. Self taking care of Ida and reading. Pleasant.
