Sat Dec 03: Sharpening dyke posts & setting post some in the P.M. Rainy.

4Thu Dec 15: Was in Seattle all day. Pearl started east at 4 P.M. Went to Mr Palmers for tea and staid at the Dillers all night.
Fri Dec 16: Came home on the Gt. Northern via Burlington & walked home. [margin: Rain A.M.]
Sat Dec 17: In the A.M. cut up & salted the pig & in the P.M. Grant & self went to town.
Sun Dec 18: Staid at home all day. Clowdy & windy.

Mon Jan 23: Weather warm & wet. Self making fence along the calf pasture. No inquiry for hay yet and none sold to speak of, of the crop of '98. Oats worth $22.00 per ton. It look as if we were going to have an early spring.
Tue Jan 24: Rainy day. The Flour Receiver came to day.
Wed Jan 25: Pleasant day. Looking for a steamer for the hay. Zerwekh has offered to sell mine on consignment for $1.00 per ton to have it in case of fire. Went out to the steamer Lake in the P.M. with Grant's boat. [margin: Warm clowdy weather.]
Thu Jan 26: The steamer Lake here for Zerwekh's hay. Loading hay -- Sorenson & Lee helping. Finished at 3 P.M. 58 tons @ 7.00

Sat Feb 04: Mercury at 12° but clowdy & looks like a change some. Doing nothing but chores.

Tue Feb 14: Conrad oiling harness in the A.M. & self fixing up fanning mill. In the P.M. Elmer came and we all fanned oats. Dickey's men here & hauled two loads of hay.
Wed Feb 15: Fanning oats finished my seed at noon & began on Elmers. Dickie got another load of hay. Elmer & Nettie & Grant went to the lecture at B.V. [margin: Stormy.]
Thu Feb 16: Finished Elmer's oats & began on the screenings. Got 60 sacks out of them. Rain all day and about all night.
Fri Feb 17: Finished the screenings & in the P.M. went to Mount Vernon with Tholstrup to pay taxes. Ground full of water & roads bad. Conrad & Nettie went to B.V. to get the machine & the plows.
Sat Feb 18: Stormy day. Not doing much but chores. Took the roller up to the barn & took it apart. Put ten sacks feed oats in the bin. Annie went to Dalsteads. [margin: 8 pigs hatched?]
Sun Feb 19: At home all day. Clowdy & cool.
Mon Feb 20: Began breaking sod. Conrad driving. Self & Nettie went to town & sold my oats at $22.00. Bot a carpet for the parlor.

Wed Feb 22: Breaking with two teams. Land in good shape. Went to the station to telephone Zewerkh about hay.

Fri Feb 24: Rainy day. Self fixing roller & helping Nettie some. Conrad doing chores and not much else.

Sun Apr 02: Easter Sunday. Nettie & Grant went to B.V. to Sunday school exercises. Woodburns folks here in the P.M.
Mon Apr 03: Plowing with two team on east end of "the 80" showery. 15 acres left to plow to night. Finished setting the strawberries 300 hills. Sold all but 2 pigs at 1.30. Land generally in good shape to plow.
Tue Apr 04: Elmer here & got 3 sks oats. Plowing with two teams. Fine weather. Self went to B.V. in the eve.

Thu May 11: Conrad put sod on the dyke on John Ball line fence. Self & McGinnis down to look at the dyke & in the P.M. was up to Dickey's logging camp.
Fri May 12: Conrad same as yesterday. Self & McGinnis folks went to Anacortes & Frank White's. Cold west wind.
Sat May 13: Conrad topping out dyke near Purdy warehouse. In the P.M. went to LaConner. Self went to Mrs Scott's with McGinnis then took them to LaConner on their way home. Saw a wheel race & ball game. Cold north wind all day.

Wed May 24: Rain again last night & today cool & cloudy. Conrad hauling dirt in the Olsen Road. Self & Grant making foundation & floor for a cow stable. The queen is 80 years to day.

Fri May 26: Conrad hauled a load of gravel in the A.M. & worked on the dyke in the P.M. by the big dam. Self was up to Fredonia. Ball has done nothing to his dyke yet to speak of. He can work better when he sees the water coming. [margin: Misty all the A.M.]

Tue Jun 06: In the A.M. Conrad & self hauled a load of brush for the dyke & Conrad worked on the ditch by sluice box in the P.M.

Thu Jun 15: Self & Conrad putting lumber on the hay barn & down to the dyke in the P.M. Georgia Carter here & gave Grant a music lesson. Grant started for the circus via Anacortes.
Fri Jun 16: Conrad went to the Olympia Marsh for lumber and took Nettie to the Samish in the P.M. & went to town to get his hair cur. Self went to hunt a girl & broke my wheel. Staid to town until eve & went to the show.
Sat Jun 17: Nettie & Grant & Conrad all gone to circus. Self choring & working in the garden. Sold the hull? & my dictionary to latter to Otto Kalso. Subscribed for the new Century dictionary & Cycolpedia yesterday for which I am to pay $88 & 5.00 for the case to be paid in installments of $5.00 per month. Went to Durants(?) Tuccuan(?) social in the eve.
Sun Jun 18: Oats looking fair & the old meadow avg looking. Went to church at B.V. The Bay View granary burned up last night. Went to Woodburns in the eve to get Nettie on her return from the circus. Conrad came home also.

Tue Aug 01: Hauling hay in the old barn 31 loads. Axel, Hansen, Conrad, Charley Oldenburg, Paulson, Elmer. Grant driving fork team.
Wed Aug 02: Hauling hay with three teams. Crew same as yesterday with Olsen added & Wendell tending gates. Got in 33 loads, 47 in the old barn, 17 in the new, total 64. Total loads out of the field 77.
Thu Aug 03: Hauling hay from Whitney field. 31 loads. 108 total. Total in the open shed to night 48. Crew, Olsen, Peterson, Hans, Axel, Oldenburg, Elmer & Conrad. Grant & self. 95 loads in nine days. The best ever was done on this ranch.
Fri Aug 04: Hauling hay. !5 loads in the open shed making 63 all total. In the P.M. put 11 loads in the stable. Crew, Axel 1/2 Oldenbug, Olsen, Elmer, Polson, Hans, Chris, Polson some for Axel making him 3/4, Conrad.
Sat Aug 05: Elmer & Conrad hauling hay to Esary. 6 loads. Axel hauling also 8 loads.
Sun Aug 06: Pleasant weather but dusty & dry. Went to church in the A.M.

Fri Aug 11: Conrad & C. Oldenburg finished hauling Esary's hay. Got two loads of bark of Marihugh & hauled to loads to Marihugh. Pleasant day.
Sat Aug 12: Conrad & self hauling a load of hay to Millard & a load of bark from Marihughs. Self went to town in the P.M. Gordon's had the wagons & got two loads of hay. Conrad cutting thistles in the P.M.
Sun Aug 13: Went to Sunday school & to church at 3 P.M. Mr Randall preached from Luke 5-5. Mr Jorgenson here with his phonograph this P.M. Rainy eve.
Mon Aug 14: Heavy rain most all last night & to day. Not doing much of anything. Grain in bad shape.
Tue Aug 15: Rain again last night & today. Grain in bad shape and hay about spoiled. Conrad cutting & splitting wood some.
Wed Aug 16: Rain again last night. This is the worst spell we ever saw in August. In the P.M. Conrad & self went up and got the Champion binder bot of Kalso.
Thu Aug 17: Conrad went to help Axel move his binder home. Self went to town & got the twine.
Fri Aug 18: Conrad went to Marihughs for a load of wood & began mowing around the first field of oats in the P.M. Self fixing the drapers & went to B.V. Went to church in the eve. Marihugh had three loads of hay delivered @ $15.00 & hauled one himself 4.00 total. $19.00 I have had three loads of bark & one of wood.

Mon Aug 21: It started to rain this A.M. at 4 oclock and kept it up all day. It looks as though it would be impossible to save the oat crop and all the hay that is out will be a total loss.
Tue Aug 22: A mist has been falling all day to day, so that no work of anykind can be done. Everything looks discouraging about having the oat crop. Conrad splitting and cutting wood.
Wed Aug 23: Wet again to day doing nothing of any acct.
Thu Aug 24: Self & Conrad cutting & binding a long the fence. Noon and in the P.M. fixed up the binder & tried to cut some out by the hay barn but it was too green & wet.
Fri Aug 25: Cutting & binding with scythe and in the P.M. Cutting with the binder had pretty good luck. Mr Thompson working in the P.M. Mr Wrights folks here this P.M. & eve, also Georgia Carter & Lee's folks.
Sat Aug 26: Rain again last night. This year does beat the second. Pleasant P.M. Cutting oats one way. Conrad shocking. Mr Wrights folks here. Went to the fair in the eve at B.V.

Tue Sep 19: Threshing at Bradleys. Fine weather. Self went to town and on to Lee. Elmer, two men & two teams at Bradleys.
Wed Sep 20: Men & teams at Bradleys. He finished & had 2900 sks. Self loaded steamer 1000 sks weight 107 lbs per sk. This make the crop out to 283560 lbs or 8860 bushels of 32 lbs or 103 bu per acre. [margin: Threshing bill $156.34.]
Thu Sep 21: Conrad not threshing to day. Hauled screenings & choring in the A.M. To town in the P.M. Self also. Gregory(?) at McFarlands not working for me.

Wed Nov 01: Ditching & plowing in the slough banks in the 5 acres field by the hay barn. No rain.
Thu Nov 02: Conrad ditching or plowing slough banks and hauled 1400 ft cedar lumber from Savages mill. Self went to LaConner on wheel in the P.M. Crumrine finished baling hay & had 118 tons.
Fri Nov 03: Conrad helping Byron with teams haul baled hay. Self making fence panels.
Sat Nov 04: Conrad & team helping Byron & old Charley also. Self making fence in the P.M. Frank & Blanche here to dinner. [margin: heavy rain last night.]
Sun Nov 05: Blanche & self went to B.V. to church. Pleasant. White's folks went home in the P.M. & Miss Marshall also.
Mon Nov 06: Rainy part of the day. Conrad went to B.V. & hauled dirt in the wagon shed, took Kalsos rack home &c. Self sharpened posts for dyke & choring.
Tue Nov 07: Conrad hauling dirt in the slough in the Miller piece. Self finished making fence panels & sharpened dyke posts.

Wed Nov 08: Conrad & self went down to get the scow and put on 200 post & took them up to the Purdy granary Cridel driving posts that could not work with an other man. Heard from election Ohio & Kentucky Republican.
Thu Nov 09: Self & C. took two loads of manure down the dyke and put five loads of wet straw behind the big dam. Strong S.E. wind by not much rain. Very warm.
Fri Nov 10: Conrad hauling dirt for the bridges down by the dam. Self making wheelbarrow & hauling dirt in the slough out by the Miller ranch. James Dunlap here to dinner.
Sat Nov 11: Conrad, self, Lee & Williamson driving posts in the A.M. Went to school meeting in the P.M. Conrad hauling dirt in the P.M. Isaac Dean came this eve. [margin: Showery P.M.]
Sun Nov 12: Went to church. Mr. Dean also. Woodburn's folks, Tom Esary's folks, Elmer & the Marshall folks here in the P.M. The preachers boy was shot in LaC. last night. [margin: Pleasant.]

Wed Nov 15: Rainy good part of the day. Not doing very much. Conrad fixed a musk rat hole. The Olsen's here.
Thu Nov 16: Grandpa & Pearl went to town. Conrad & self hauling straw on the dyke. The "Home Comfort" man here & staid all night. Elmer & Bradleys folks here this eve.
Fri Nov 17: Conrad hauling straw. Self went to B.V. to school meeting in the P.M. Rainy. Bot a H.C. Range $67.00.
Sat Nov 18: Another rainy day. Conrad washing & oiling harness. Grandpa came back from Tillinghasts. (Axels time haying 10 1/4 days $20.50. Making tank & pasture & team & wagon one day.) [margin: ]
Sun Nov 19: Stormy pretty high tide Mr Dean started for Seattle. Tide 10 inches short of the '95 tide.
Mon Nov 20: Conrad cleaning out ditches & choring. Self went to Massey's sale.
Tue Nov 21: Conrad went to town for flour & sugar & shorts for the cow. Self went to Mount Vernon to witness on the Ranns case & paid taxes. [margin: Highest tide of the season so far.]
Wed Nov 22: Conrad hauling dirt in the slough. Self went to Bay View and choring about. The stove man came and got his team. Party at Benson's to night. [margin: Wind but no rain.]
Thu Nov 23: In the A.M. C. & self went after a load of brush for the dyke by Purdy's granary. C. hauling dirt in the P.M. Self & Pearl went to town.
Fri Nov 24: Conrad not working. Went over to Axels. Self went to town with Pearl yesterday. Choring and not much else. Tried to stop a muskrat hole.
Sat Nov 25: Fixing up gates and doing the chores. Pleasant. Conrad not home yet.
Sun Nov 26: Grant & self went to church. Mr Gorton died today at 3 oclock. Aunt Mary Wallace came this P.M.
Mon Nov 27: Conrad cleaning out ditch. Storing party of the P.M. aged last night.
Tue Nov 28: Conrad digging a ditch by the barn & helping Elmer butchered the pig in the P.M. Self went to Bay View and also to Mr Gorton's funeral.
Wed Nov 29: Stormy A.M. Conrad doing chores. Elmer went to Anacortes for Nettie and came home in the night. Self & went to shooting match at B.V.
Thu Nov 30: Thanksgiving day but a very rainy & stormy A.M. Elmer, Nettie & Aunt Mary here in the eve. Lee's folks & the Osborn folks here.

Fri Dec 01: Elmer went home. Aunt Mary went to Jennings. Pleasant, land full of water and much of Lee's flooded. Gaches here and offered 21.00 for oats & 9.00 for hay. Conrad took Aunt Mary to Jennings, done the chores & sawed wood.
Sat Dec 02: Conrad & self down helping Lee drive wharf posts in the A.M. & in the P.M. down fixing dyke some & in the eve Lee & self went down & fixed a sluice box. Fresh water very high in the field. [margin: Pleasant, frost.]

Sun Dec 03: Frost. Pleasant day. did not go to church. Went over to Mrs Whitney's in the P.M. with Nettie on here way to school.

Tue Dec 05: Doing chores & went over to Stearns with Sunday Law(?) Paper. In the P.M. cleaned out the tank.
Wed Dec 06: Was out with Law Paper & in the P.M. took Grandma over to Frank White's. Clowdy & windy.
Thu Dec 07: Was out getting names on the Sunday paper. Highest tide of the season so far. The Callahan dam went out up towards Fredonia. About 7 inches short of the high tides of 1886 & 1895. Ida sick abed all day. [margin: Rain some.]
Fri Dec 08: Dr. Power here. I went to LaC. to take him home. Rainy part of the day.
Sat Dec 09: Self in Bay View getting names on Sunday paper. [margin: Rainy.]
Sun Dec 10: At home all day. Weather bad.
Mon Dec 11: Dr. Powers here and I went to town to take him home. [margin: Rainy]
Tue Dec 12: Not doing much but chores. Weather still wet & sloppy.
Wed Dec 13: Not very well. Ida ditto. Doing chores & reading.
Thu Dec 14: Doing chores. Mr Welts here to get me to sign his bond. Grant went to Bay View this eve.
Fri Dec 15: Worked on the road in the A.M. letting the water out of the gravel. Snowing most of the day, but melted. In the P.M. made a wood box. [margin: Snow.]
Sat Dec 16: Self picked over potatos & done the chores. Snowing some but did not accumulate much.
Sun Dec 17: Pleasant day. Mercury at 30° and 1/2 in snow. Ida still poorly. The new Dr. no benefit so far.
Mon Dec 18: Warmer & quite pleasant. Alf Stacey here with books, Miss Tellofson went to the Samish with McCullough.
Tue Dec 19: Self done the chores & went to town with Pearl. Cool south east wind. Ida no better.
Wed Dec 20: Went to the station & got medicine for Ida. Heavy rain in the P.M. Wrote to Zerwekh about hay. Hay & grain are very dull. No buyers. [margin: String south wind.]
Thu Dec 21: Doing chores & not much else. Rainy.
Fri Dec 22: Rain. Much land flooded & soaked with water. Went to the station this P.M.
Sat Dec 23: Nettie came this A.M. about 2 A.M. With Marnie & Ann Ball via Anacortes. Frank White brot Grandma home this A.M. Christmas tree in B.V. tonight. Grant & the girls went. Ida in bed sick all day. [margin: Rain, warm mercury 59°]
Sun Dec 24: Mr D.L. Moody died Friday noon at his home. Grant & Nettie went to church. Ida same as usual.
Mon Dec 25: This is a very sorry(?) Christmas. Grant in B.V. the balance at home. Warm & misty.
Tue Dec 26: Showery part of the day & pleasant some.
Wed Dec 27: Pleasant. Finest day on the month so far. Frank Wright came this A.M. from Tacoma. Frank & Grant went to B.V. to get oil and get Nell shod. This is written with a fountain pen which I got for a Christmas present. Settled up with Osborn and start a new acct from date. A party at McKennas to night. The young folks went. [margin: Frost 30°]
Thu Dec 28: Self went to town, doing chores & not much else. Morris Campbell got his arm cut off in the mill.
Fri Dec 29: Self went to the Ridge to take Grandma & then to town. Ona Carter died this A.M. with diptheria & Will Wells little girl yesterday.
Sat Dec 30: Stormy day. At home. Ida poorly.
Sun Dec 31: Self went to B.V. to church. Pleasant. Mon Jan 1st, 1900 see next book.
