Thu Dec 27: Very cold & windy. Ralph P, Clark W and James Burchett here to stay all night. Bradleys here in the eve.

Sat Dec 29: Pearl & George went home to day. Cold but pleasant.

Tue Jan 01: Hattie Williamson & Sam Dunlap married. Had dinner with Teenie, Globe & Bob there. Will went to town with load of wood. Wet & gloomy. Got letter from E.A.

Wed Jan 02: Went to town with Lee to get money of Aunt Lou's for May. Very cold and windy. Had supper at Bradleys, Arthur Whitney here this eve. Looks like snow.
Thu Jan 03: Four inches of snow this morning. Blizzard in the A.M. Quiet toward night. Nettie still at Kates. Will washed harness.
Fri Jan 04: Nettie came home today. Clowdy raining at night.
Sat Jan 05: Will and I worked most all day in milk house sorting potatos & apples. Rained by spells most all day. Had another letter.
Sun Jan 06: More snow last night and snowed most all P.M. Will took Nettie back to LaConner & brought Pearl home. Mr Walter called.
Mon Jan 07: Will took Teenie, the children & I over to Bob's. Had a pleasant visit. Went over on the snow but came back on the planks.
Tue Jan 08: Raining in the morning. Pleasant P.M. Received the tools(?) from Walter today.
Wed Jan 09: A.J. Morrow married. Helped Teenie cut up and salt here meat. Went up to Walters in the P.M. Rained at night. Mr Walter brought us home. Rained a torrent and blew a gale all night. [margin: Had letter. Chinook wind.]
Thu Jan 10: Highest tide of season. Backs 2 in of notch. Axels dyke broke last night. Rainy & windy most of the day. Windy this evening. Afraid of another high tide.
Fri Jan 11: Blew a gale and rained some last night. Rained a little shower in the A.M. Very pleasn rustic evening then a little cloudy. Tide not quite so high as yesterday. [margin: Chinook wind, Temp 54.]
Sat Jan 12: Blew a gale from S.E. all night. In consequence had highest tide every known here. Ran about 2 feet over the dyke. All the ranch dykes broken, dams out and the bottom out of every thing. Will took stock to Mr Olsons(?). [margin: overflow]
Sun Jan 13: The bluist day know on Swinomish Flats. Whitney Island flooded also George Jenne, Fred Jenne, R.H. Ball, J. Peth and in fact everything as far as the eye can see is under water but J. Ball & Callhans. News from LaC says they are flooded store A.G.T with the rest. A good part of Samish flooded. Wills folks had to move out of their house this morning. Lacked by 1/2 of coming in on house. Men tried to work last night but could not do much. [margin: Tide not quite as high as yesterday. Blue Sunday.]
Mon Jan 14: Still under water. No one came to do anything last night. Guess everyone is discouraged. Peth's dam gave out. [margin: Windy. Tide high again.]

Tue Jan 15: The men worked on the dam and put it in last night but part of it went out this morning. Will went to town this P.M. to see Polson. Grandma's rheumatism bad again. No mail since Fri. We are gone up salt check sure enough, but have plenty company. [margin: no rain]
Wed Jan 16: Will went up to station and over to Bob's. Got his letters from Papa. Tonight men down here wanted to work i.e. some of them, so tried the dam again. Worked some in the P.M. and at night but it all went out again in the morning. High tide again.
Thu Jan 17: Men worked on dyke out by hay barn tonight putting(?) in dyke which stayed. John Peth's dam stayed ?? again.
Fri Jan 18: Men working this P.M. and tonight on dyke & dam. Hope it may be a success this time. Blustering and snowing at times today. Will went to town this A.M. Worked on dam from 9 until 12. [margin: Nice weather]
Sat Jan 19: Working on dam. Was cold & unpleasant. Some snow. Dam stayed in.
Sun Jan 20: Will brought home Snowflake, Daisy, Polly, Star & Charlie. [margin: Fine day.]
Mon Jan 21: Another beautiful day. Will working in dam in P.M. I waded down to Bradley's this P.M. Had letter from Papa. [margin: Fine day.]
Tue Jan 22: Mr Esary here helping Will with the hay. About 9 1/2 ton spoiled. Teenie, Grant, Ida & I got up as far as the hay barn to day. Got another letter. [margin: Good day. Cold north wind.]
Wed Jan 23: Will did not work on dam last night. Will work to night expect to get it all close in two hrs. Mrs Esary here today. Sold some hay to Golets & Osborn. Went out to hay barn again today. [margin: Beautiful day.]
Thu Jan 24: Did not get dam in last night. Thought best not to rush matter. Will finish tonight. Whitney's girls came over today. Pearl still at Bradley's. Bob Woodburn finishes his dam to night and if it stays Whitney Island will be all O.K. Not much water in today. Did not cover the lawn. [margin: Lovely day.]
Fri Jan 25: Got the dam in last night and I tell you it seems good to see the ground again. Will worked all night. Pearl came home today. Edna, Helen & Arlie came over today. [margin: Temp 27. Fine weather.]
Sat Jan 26: Will worked on dyke in the A.M. and he and I went to LaConner this P.M. More water on W. Bell and at R.H. Ball than on us. Found everybody well. [margin: Pleasant in A.M. Windy and very cold at evening. Temp 27]

Pleasant day. Will working on dyke. Self in Spokane Falls this A.M. on the way home. Arrived in Seattle at 12 oclock.
Tue Jan 29: Started from Seattle this A.M. at 9.15 but was delayed by a land slide below Everett. Arrived home at 3.40 P.M. Found the water off the ranch and the folks well. Will working on dyke. Fine weather.
Wed Jan 30: Will working on dyke. Self not doing much. Was down to see the wreck. Mrs McKenna & Mrs Elliott was here visiting. Pleasant.
Thu Jan 31: Will working on dyke. Self went to the station and mailed a letter and some books to Mr Mace & Mr Hyde. Was working on the dyke some in the P.M.

February 1895

Fri Feb 01: Will went down to work on dyke some but had to quit for rain. The trunk came to day. Rain not heavy enough to amt to much.
Sat Feb 02: Both working on the dyke.
Sun Feb 03: Light rain this A.M. Went to town and staid all night. Was at Alf's in the P.M. Nettie was baptized this eve. [margin: ]
Mon Feb 04: Will working on dyke. Self in town most of the day. Nettie came home with me. Took dinner with Tillinghasts.
Tue Feb 05: Will went to LaConner with wood for Roys house. Self not doing much. Was up to Olsons and fixed up some fence. Ida & Grant came home.
Wed Feb 06: Received a letter from Father giving an acct of the death of Nannie Leighton and the wedding of the boy. Will & self working on dyke. Very pleasant day. [margin: ]
Thu Feb 07: Another beautiful day. Will hauling wood in the A.M. for himself. In the P.M. a load for me and on the dyke for 2 hours. Self on dyke but not working but 5 hours. [margin: Frost 30°.]

Fri Feb 08: Will not working. Was over to Bob's. Self not doing much. Cleaned out the John Ball sluice box.
Sat Feb 09: Will not working. Was up to Kalso's. Phil Bartlett here & Gaches to look at the oats. Fixing up fence in the slough by the orchard. Was down to the school house in the P.M. Frost.
Sun Feb 10: Frost 24°. Lovely day. Went to Bay view to church. Rev. Massey preached. Wrote letter to Dan Kruger(?).
Mon Feb 11: Will & self picking up ditch timber & wood and breaking colt Prince. Pleasant day. Frost 24°.
Tue Feb 12: Frost 25°. Sing of a change. Warmer at night. Will not working, went to town in the P.M. Pearl with him. Sold the Esary's a scow load of hay. Set a gate post and made a c??????m for Nettie.
Wed Feb 13: Pleasant. Will not working in the A.M. but was in the P.M. Hauled a load of hay to Millard and a load of wood for me. Self not doing much. Sold Walter the balance of the wet hay.
Thu Feb 14: Will & self working on dyke beyond the hay barn. Sold 1400 sks of oats and 35 tons hay to Gaches. Oats at $18. and hay at $7.00 Weather warm & pleasant.
Fri Feb 15: Threatening rain. Will & self working on dyke 1/2 by the hay barn & 1/2 by the 1st big box. Bartlett hauled 1250 ft lumber for dyke.
Sat Feb 16: Will went to Vancouver. Self on dyke 3 hours and doing chores. Clear & pleasant. No sign of rain. Ground in good order to plow.
Sun Feb 17: Light rain last night. Staid at home all day. Alf & Susie here in the P.M.
Mon Feb 18: Rainy day but rain rather light. Not doing much but chores. Wedged up the house some. Got a letter from Geo. Grass still living.
Tue Feb 19: Rain quite hard last night and most of the day. Was up to Kalso's and done the chores.
Wed Feb 20: Rain some more in the P.M. Was up to the Ridge in the A.M. and to LaConner in the P.M. Got haircut & Grant a pair of gum boots.
Thu Feb 21: Considerable rain last night and clowdy to day. Have had about 1 1/2 in rain this week now, but the water is still salty running out of the ditches.
Fri Feb 22: Not doing much but chores. Mr Baker here. Will came home from Vancouver. Rain some last night.
Sat Feb 23: Rain again a good part of last night. Think we have had over two inches this week now. Went to town with Mr Baker. Rainy P.M. light. Grass is beginning to look first rate.
Sun Feb 24: Clowdy & misty but not much rain. Lee has the boxes set up trying to flood his ranch. Warm.
Mon Feb 25: Will took some hay to Isaacson. Got a load of wood. Helped set some posts by the straw stack & in the P.M. was ditching in the "80". Self went to town with Ida & Lenie. Got 2 sks flour & some sugar & pair gum boots. Clowdy but no rain.
Tue Feb 26: Clowdy & windy but no rain. Fixed up the fence around the stack, hauled a load of D timber from Pavitt. Self up to Walter's to see about the school in the P.M. Will ditching in the P.M. Water still some salty. Think we need another rain or more to get a crop.
Wed Feb 27: Heavy wind all last night and some rain this A.M. Will washing harness and self fixing maul & went to mail letter to Miss Bowman in the A.M. In the P.M. Will ditching & self went to LaConner for the folks. [margin: Pleasant P.M.]
Thu Feb 28: Will & self ditching in the lower field. Water still pretty salt where it runs out of the ditch. It seems like a poor chance for oats.

Fri Mar 01: Will & self ditching. Nice weather for work, but too dry for salt land. S. Risbell & Lou McKenna married today in the A.M.
Sat Mar 02: Will ditching one half. Lame back in the P.M. Self down fixing up the school house. Walter & Otto also. Frank & Blanch came over. Pleasant. [margin: Frost.]
Sun Mar 03: Frank & Blanch here. Did not go to church. Pleasant. The Maid of Oregon here for oats.
Mon Mar 04: Loading oats & hay. The "Perry" with bales. Bartlett & Elmer helping. Frank & B went home. Sold 1400 sks oats & 36 tons hay. Pleasant. Will working done but complaining with a lame back.
Tue Mar 05: Will working 3/4 1/4 for himself hauling load of wood. Lovely weather a good many plowing. Went to town & got my teeth taken out. Pearl went to see Miss Marshall. Maid of Oregon stuck out on the flats.
Wed Mar 06: Frost. Will & self picking up rails and hauling ditch timber & rails for the Olsen Purday line fence. In the P.M. Will began plowing.
Thu Mar 07: Will plowing. Land in fine order. Self fixing fence and ditching some. Gums pretty sore. [margin: Frost 30.]
Fri Mar 08: Will plowing. Self ditching and burning off the stubble down by the Purdy ranch. Ida & Grant went to town. [margin: Frost 30.]
Sat Mar 09: Clowdy with south wind. Will plowing. Sold Boyd the cow & calf. In the P.M. Self & Grant went over to see the dredger work in Swinomish Slough. Ground in good order to plow. Grass still looking pretty well as though it would make a hay crop.
Sun Mar 10: Ida went to town to get Pearl. Self bothered with teeth, did not go anywhere. Baker preached in Bay View this P.M. Clowdy but no rain.
Mon Mar 11: Will plowing. Self sitting in the house with sore jaw. Miss Bowman began school and the children went. Grass still looking pretty nice. Looks like more rain. The calf sold to Boyd came back. [margin: Little rain.]
Tue Mar 12: Will plowing. Self binding(?) papers & staying in the house. Frank Leamer here. Pleasant. [margin: Rain a little last night.]
Wed Mar 13: Paid Woodburn on acct $200.00. Will plowing in the A.M. Went to town in the P.M. & self with him. Clear & cold. Ground dryer than ever before at this date as I remember. [margin: Hard frost.]
Thu Mar 14: Will plowing. Self finished the ditch & put the timber in it. [margin: Hard frost.]
Fri Mar 15: Helped Will plow in the ditches. He was plowing the balance of the day. Clowdy & cold but no rain.
Sat Mar 16: Fine dry weather for plowing. no rain in sight. Will plowing, finished across the road at 10 A.M. & began on the Whitney field. In fine order but salty. Self driving Prince colt, fixing up harness & whiffletrees, neck yokes, &c. Axel & Sarah married to day.
Sun Mar 17: Pleasant. At home in the A.M. & went to Ridgway to church in the P.M. Baker preached. Heard Mr Randall was very sick. Roads getting quite dry and the plowing is well along. Dryest spring since 1884. Rec'd a letter from Geo.(last night) to night. [margin: Frost 30]
Mon Mar 18: Clowdy day and south wind looks some like rain. Will plowing. Self choring. Expected Baker to get a colt but he did not come. Baker came later. [margin: School closed.]
Tue Mar 19: Strong S.E. wind and low bar., but no rain. Baker here & he & S braking "Rock" some. Will plowing. A light rain in the eve. Polly had her calf, a heifer.
Wed Mar 20: Windy but no rain. Will plowing, Baker and self driving Rock some. Wrote to Geo. Very windy.
Thu Mar 21: Bar. lowest I ever saw it. Had a little rain last night. Will plowing. Self & Mr Baker weent to town, drove "Maud". [margin: Windy & cold.]
Fri Mar 22: Will plowing. Self choring. Cold & windy. Hitched "Prince" up and let him plow a little. Thomas Blanck caught & shot yesterday. [margin: Showery but not much rain.]

Tue Mar 26: Rainy in the A.M. Will & self hauled a load of hay from the hay barn and put 13 sks oats in the feed bin. Will plowing in the P.M. Grass growing pretty well. Clover also.
Wed Mar 27: Clowdy & showery. Will plowing. Self rolling some in the P.M. (meadow). Rainy to night. The bar very low. The lowest I ever saw it. [margin: Bar. 29-6/20]
Thu Mar 28: Rained 1/2 inch last night. And clowdy to day. Cleaning oats for seed. 100 sks. Grass looking fine.
Fri Mar 29: Will plowing finished. Self went to town in the P.M. settled bills. Bot a N.Y. Dft. for Geo Sisson for $542.00. Rec. 500 from Gaches on oat account.
Sat Mar 30: Pleasant drying day. Will hauling wood for himself 1/2 & harrowing the fall plowing in the P.M. Self white washing the trees & planted some onion sets. Johnie & Mrs. Wilson here this P.M. The folks went to Bay view to School Entertainment.
Sun Mar 31: Warm but clowdy & threatening rain. Went to church in the P.M. Baker preached.

April 1895

Mon Apr 01: Rainy day, doing nothing.
Tue Apr 02: Will & self fixing dyke out near the hay barn. Cold south wind all day. Elliotts folks here this eve.
Wed Apr 03: Rainy most of the day, quite hard part of the time. Not working but 1/4 on dyke.
Thu Apr 04: Will & the women went to town. Self fixing dyke by the slough banks south of the stable. Cool & showery. Land pretty wet. [margin: Frost 32]
Fri Apr 05: Will & self working on dyke all day. Drying day. Lee plowing. [margin: Frost 32]
Sat Apr 06: Pleasant. Both dyking by the hay barn lot. Too cold for seeding yet.
Sun Apr 07: Nettie & self went to town to church. Clowdy day.
Mon Apr 08: Will began gang plowing on the fall plowing. Self working in the garden and choring some. Fine day.
Tue Apr 09: Will finished the gang plowing & plowed the garden. Self cultivated the garden in the A.M. and rolling meadow in the P.M. Had a hard thunder shower this eve. John Ball began seeding to day.
Wed Apr 10: Will began plowing sod down near Olsen's. Self harrowing with 3 horses. Had a shower in the A.M. Cold south wind.
Thu Apr 11: Will plowing. Self harrowing. Planted some peas. Pleasant day. Walter's folks here this eve.
Fri Apr 12: Will harrowing on the Whitney piece. Self went to town in the A.M. & rolled the meadow across the road in the P.M. Bell & Jenne seeding. Land in good order.
Sat Apr 13: Will harrowing, finished the Whitney field. Very windy & showery in the A.M. Self not doing much. Went to school meeting in the P.M. Got some strawberry plants of Mendenhall.
Sun Apr 14: Willard Whitney died in PA. Cool & windy. Went to Bay View to church in the P.M. Baker preached. [margin: Easter]
Mon Apr 15: Cold & windy and disagreeable weather. Will harrowing the last piece down by Olsen's. Self set out some strawberries in the A.M. & rolled the meadow by the straw stack in the P.M. Will hauled rock in the P.M. by the stable for road.
Tue Apr 16: Still cold & windy, light shower in the ~~P.M.~~night and another today at noon. Will not working. Went to town. Self pounding stone, cutting up sods, &c. Put a sack of feed in the chicken barrel.
Wed Apr 17: Cool & clowdy, but no rain. Began seeding in the Whitney field. Bartlett helping harrow 1/2 day. Self rolling 1/2.

Thu Apr 18: Seeding, harrowing & rolling. Bartlett harrowing. Cool & showery but not enough to stop work. Finished the Whitney field.
Fri Apr 19: Seeding. Bartlett here. 45 acres seeded. Self harrowing the Whitney field second time. Warm & pleasant. [margin: Daisy had calf.]
Sat Apr 20: Another beautiful day. Harrowing, rolling, & seeding. Finished seeding. Sowed 97 sacks on a little over 60 acres. Bartlett helping. Have it all harrowed over once & the Whitney field finished all but rolling land. Dryer than last year on June 1st.
Sun Apr 21: Pleasant day, did not go to church or anywhere else. A.J. Stacey's folks here to dinner. Heard of Willard's death. Died Easter Sunday, Apr 14th. [margin: ]
Mon Apr 22: Will harrowing, self rolling. Drying day. Land pretty dry for the time of year. Wrote to Geo. Grass still looking pretty well.
Tue Apr 23: Will went to Bartletts to seed. Self rolling in the A.M. and went to town in the P.M. Drying wind all day. Bell's oats coming up. Meadows looking well.
Wed Apr 24: Will seeding for Bartlett. Very drying weather. Land dusty. Self rolling finished this side of the road. Pearl went over to Kate's.
Thu Apr 25: Another clear dry day. Will harrowing. Self rolling in the A.M. & planting some stuff in the garden. Prospects slim for it to amt to anything. [margin: Frost.]
Fri Apr 26: Will went to Bartlett's to help harrow. Self finished rolling. Dry & windy.
Sat Apr 27: Martin's here today. Will hauling gravel. Self went to the beach in the P.M. to fix the road. Clowdy but no rain and the grass turning yellow & drying up fast. If it don't rain soon we are gone up. Land as dry as it usually is in June or July. This has been the dryest April & March on record. [margin: Began getting the daily paper.]
Sun Apr 28: Came near losing our house by fire. Dry & pleasant. Self and the girls went to Bay View to church. Heard the Presbyterian minister. Every thing needs rain, but there is no sign of any.
Mon Apr 29: Will hailing gravel 4 loads. Self planted a row of mangolds & worked out by the granary some fixing sluice. Warm & dry. Walter had Maud & Jean Saturday & today 1/2. He had one bale hay & sack of oats. Alf came from LaConner for a team. Let him have Maud & Jean. Had a letter from father last night. Uncle Will Whitney (1831-1895) died on the 14th, Easter Sunday. Tue Apr 30: Will hauling gravel in the A.M. Helping on the dyke in P.M. Had some light rain towards night, but not to amt to anything.

May 1895

Wed May 01: Will & self fixing dyke 1/2. Self cleaning out ditch and Will hauling gravel in the P.M. The folks went up to Soderburgs in the P.M.
Thu May 02: Dyking in the A.M. & self all day. Will went to LaConner in the P.M. Threatening rain & misty some but it don't come to amt to anything. Rec'd a letter from Father & Eva Reed this week.
Fri May 03: Began fixing dyke by the Granary in the A.M. Both working by the outside of dyke west of hay barn in the P.M. South wind but no rain yet. Bar quite low. 6/20 below 30. Have worked on dyke since Mar 14th. 14 1/2 for 1 man. 1 day near granary. Athis was south of here except 1 day. [margin: Dyke]
Sat May 04: 1/4 inch rain last night & today. Will not working. Went to Kalsos. Self fixed up after the fire & in the P.M. washed wagons. Fine growing day. Grass look pretty well.
Sun May 05: Self & the girls went to church at LaC. & in the P.M. we & Will's folks went to John Balls. Clowdy.

Wed May 08: Another nice little shower last night. Will hauling ditch timber. Self not doing much. Went to the O. Marsh in the P.M. to see about lumber. Growing day for fresh land, grass looking well and some of the oats but on clay banks, especially on fall plowed land, it is very poor stand so far.
Thu May 09: Will hauled D. timber in the A.M. Self fixing fence on John Ball dyke. In the P.M. Will worked in the garden and self went to town. Got sack beans & wagon wheels, also 1.00 coffee & sack sugar. Grain on fresh land looking fine. [margin: Fine day but cool]
Fri May 10: Will hauling (ditch in the P.M. one load timber. mistake) Will went to LaConner with 2 tons hay for Gaches in the A.M. Self not doing much went to see hawkins but he was away. Dry & windy.
Sat May 11: Will hauling wood & D. timber in the A.M. and dyking in the P.M. Self all day fixing the base of the dyke beyond the stable slough. Dry & windy.
Sun May 12: Went to B.V. in the P.M. Baker preached from Luke 6, 38 and took tea with us. Dry & hot with north wind.
Mon May 13: Will hauling gravel on road account. Self fixing dyke in the A.M. and down looking at dyke in the P.M. Dry with north wind. Oats & grass suffering from salt & dry weather. The prospect is very poor for raising any oats, unless it rains very soon. Pig weeds are coming. Ida went to Walters for calf meat. 44 lbs.
Tue May 14: Dry & windy. Will & team on the Road. Self choring in the A.M. & went to town with Ida in the P.M. Grain looking fairly well but all needs rain. Especially salt land.
Wed May 15: Will went to town working on the road. Dry, hot & windy. The grass drying up. Oats ditto. Everything looks as though we would not raise a thing to sell this season.
Thu May 16: Will working on the road. Dry & hot. Strong north wind. Took a walk over to Massey's & Woodburn's. Saw lots of poor grain it all needs rain badley. Some clowdy to night but we have not much hope of rain. Painted the bedroom ceiling to day, where it was burned.
Fri May 17: Clowdy & threatening rain this A.M. but cleared off as usual this spring with no rain. Will & team on the road. Self cleaned out the John Ball dyke ditch and chored about the house in the A.M. Was up to Olsen's place in the P.M. His grain is up pretty well, but needs rain. My meadow looks better than I would think it could in such dry weather. Fruit trees seem to be all right yet and growing. Women cleaning house. Moved the stove this eve.
Sat May 18: Will & team on the road. Self fixed up the truck wagon. Made a double tree for it, fixed some posts for the dyke, &c. Walter had Maud to harrow potato ground. South wind but no rain. Grain still growing slowly and pig weeds ditto.
Sun May 19: Looked some little rain last night but cleared off with out any as usual. Everything getting dryer & dryer. Dryest May on record. Went to church to hear Rev. Pickles this A.M. The others did not go. Four weeks today since we had a letter from Geo.
Mon May 20: Clowdy & threatening but only a sprinkle of rain. Will & team on the road. Self up to Kalso's in the A.M. & at Fredonia in the P.M. for lumber. Callahan's oats looking well. Balls are very weedy.
Tue May 21: Will & team on the road. Self fixing dyke some. Clowdy & began to rain about 4 P.M. and rained lightly till 6 P.M. [margin: Rain 1/4 inch.]
Wed May 22: Will & self worked on the dyke 3/4 of a day each. Elliott here & cut the colt "Corbett". The oats are simpley full of pig weeds, can't see how they can amt to anything except the Whitney piece of which a part looks pretty fair yet. [margin: Rain about 1/4 inch last night.]

Fri May 24: Began working on the dyke but had to quit for rain. Rained some ost of the fore noon but it was fine & light. Was up to Kalsos and looking at crops. They are improving.
Sat May 25: Quite a good deal more rain last night and still prospects of more. This will insure a fair hay crop, I think. Worked on dyke 2 hours each in the P.M. Sprinkled most of the day, too much to work.
Sun May 26: Clowdy & windy. Self went to Decoration ????? Memorial exercises. Grandma went with me Rev Brooks preached the sermon. [margin: Polly]
Mon May 27: Will not working, went to town. Self working on dyke in the A.M. Elmer also. In the P.M. went up to see about Otto's scow. Little rain last night.

Tue Jul 23: Hauling hay with 3 teams. Bartlett & team, Gorton, Olsen, Finch, Smith, the other fellow. Got in 26 loads. Hay in fine order. Will hauling, self driving fork horse. Smith had 12 lbs. beef.
Wed Jul 24: Hauling hay 29 loads, Crew same as yesterday. Weather fine but windy. New barn full 54 loads.
Thu Jul 25: Fine weather. Hauling hay. 29 loads. 30 in old barn (4 last week). 84 to date in both barns this week + 98 all told, stable & all crew same as yesterday.
Fri Jul 26: Hauling hay. Crew same as yesterday except Bartlett who worked 1/4 with team. Finished all except what is sold. Hauled in 24 loads in the old barn. 108 of first quality. Hauled in 4 days. Finch, Bartlett & Jacobsen each took a load of hay home. Fine weather, but dry & dusty.

Sat Jul 27: (125 loads hauled now all told.) Will baling hay with Star & Charley. Bartlett at Callahans. Self cleaned up about the barn and went to town in the P.M. Bebber with by. Dry & host. Fri Sep 06: Will & team at Olsen's. Self & Lee killed a pig & went to Bay view & I went to town in the P.M. & got 450 sks to pay Lee back. Sacks $4.75 per hundred.

Sun Sep 29: Frank Whites folks here. Nettie came home last night from Seattle. Beauty broke the cart shaft last night. Went to LaConner to church & to take Tillinghasts buggie home. Frank went also. All went to Bay View to church in the P.M. Rev. Baker preached.
Mon Sep 30: Will went with hay press. Self hailing rocks. Lovely weather. Franks folks were here this A.M.

October 1895

Tue Oct 01: Hauling rocks for the dyke. Will went to the Samish. Fine weather.
Wed Oct 02: Not doing much but chores. Went to town, Ida & Will also.
Thu Oct 03: Worked on the dyke 3/4, making bridge, hauling brush & rock. Will went to LaConner to see about Alanson's hay.
Fri Oct 04: Will at Nevills baling hay. Lovely weather. Lee helping me haul straw, 2 loads then went to town with Grant to get teeth pulled.
Sat Oct 05: Hauling straw 1 load for me and two for Lee. Not doing much in the P.M. Mrs. Wallace here this eve. Another lovely day.
Sun Oct 06: Fine day. Went to B.V. with Nettie. Heard Rev Mr Knight. Alf's folks and Mrs Leamer here & Mrs Blumberg also.
Mon Oct 07: Will at Nevills baling. Self not doing much in the A.M. but hauled manure & straw in the P.M. Fine weather but foggy.
Tue Oct 08: Will finished at Nevill's. Self & the folks went to town. Bot 3500 bale ties at $7.25 per M. Oats selling slowly at $100. & $11. Hay selling at $6.75. John Peth finished threshing this P.M. [margin: Clowdy & rain some at night.]
Wed Oct 09: Went up to Walters & got some potatos. Not doing much. Lee baling hay this P.M.
Thu Oct 10: Went up to the Ridge and out to Smith's got some onions. In the P.M. was up to Balls & Olsens.
Fri Oct 11: Fine weather. Not doing much in the A.M. but setting fence posts in the P.M. on the J.B. line fence.
Sat Oct 12: Was on the dyke sowing seed 1 hour & then went to Mt Vernon on dyke business. Clowdy but no rain. Lee quit baling.
Sun Oct 13: At home all day. Pleasant. Will Walter here to dinner & Tom Esary's to supper.
Mon Oct 14: Baling hay. 21 tons. Sorenson & A Tholstrup helping me.
Tue Oct 15: Baling. 26 tons. Crew same as yesterday.
Wed Oct 16: Baling 71 tons to date. Just finish new barn. Weather lovely. Hay weighing splendidly.
Thu Oct 17: Baling. Sorenson & Arnold T. helping. Fine weather. Self went to town for wire in the A.M.
Fri Oct 18: Baling. Fine weather.
Sat Oct 19: Finished baling. Crew quit at 3 P.M. total amt baled 136 tons. Ed's folks here to night.
Sun Oct 20: Went to Bay View to church in the morning & eve. Rev. Wright preached.

Mon Oct 21: Will hauling wood & killing pig. Self not doing much.
Tue Oct 22: Will & self went to town in the A.M. Will after his potatos in the P.M.
Wed Oct 23: Self & team hauling dirt on dyke in the A.M. and by the granary in the P.M. Will began to work in the A.M. but hurt his hip and had to quit. No rain but foggy.
Thu Oct 24: Hauling dirt & fixing dyke. Little shower last night. Will went to Samish to see about renting a place.
Fri Oct 25: Self same as yesterday. Mary Stacey & here flock here this week.
Sat Oct 26: Hauled two loads of water in the A.M. & then went to town to take Mary Stacey & family. Lee went with us. Lovely day. Will started for Marysville.
Sun Oct 27: I am 46 today. Wrote to Father and went to church in the evening. Will came home. [margin: Team 1 3/4 ]
Mon Oct 28: Working on the dyke. Sorenson helping me. Lee working also. Hard frost. Will at Samish.
Tue Oct 29: Working on dyke, Sorenson also, Lee also by the big dam. Mr Baker & his daughter here last night all night. Frost.
Wed Oct 30: Working on the dyke topping out Allen slough dam. Sorenson helping me. Lee & Emil Tholstrup also. Lee's team about 8 hours, Lee about 5 hours.
Thu Oct 31: Self & Sorenson & team on dyke fixing Cultis dam. Lee seven hours & team also. Will hauling oats to the Samish for himself. Oats are only worth 9.00 per ton now.

November 1895

Fri Nov 01: Working on dyke up by Purdy's granary. Sorenson helping. Ida & Pearl went to town & got my underclothes. Rained a shower at noon & again in the eve. [margin: Rain.]
Sat Nov 02: Self choring in the A.M. & cleaning out ditch & topping out dyke in the P.M. Clowdy but no rain. Will hauling oats to the Samish. Lee worked this A.M. some & helped my two hours or so. [margin: Frost.]
Sun Nov 03: Went to church at B.V. in the morning & eve. Rev Wright preached. Frost & clear.
Mon Nov 04: Lee & self went to the timber for dike posts. Got a load in the A.M. & broke the wagon. Lee had his team. I took the wagon to Otto's to get it fixed in the P.M. Went to church in the eve. [margin: Frost 25°]
Tue Nov 05: Lee had his team. Went to church in the eve. Rev Clark of LaConner preached. [margin: Frost.]
Wed Nov 06: Lee & self went to the timber & got two load of posts for dike in the A.M. Self got a load for myself in the P.M. Oats only worth 9.00 per ton now. The girls up to Barr's this eve. Clowdy this eve. Sold 1/2 ton oats & 1/2 ton of hay to Edison which came to $8.35. Will took a load of oats of me 1/2 tons.
Thu Nov 07: Will & self went to LaConner with a log of B. Hay for rock to pay for a single harness. Clowdy but no rain. Grant fell & hurt him this eve. Will & the girls went to B.V. to church this eve.
Fri Nov 08: Not doing much. Will hauling oats. Self & the girls went to Bay View in the P.M. & also in the eve. Rev Mr Abbot preached this eve. A fine sermon.
Sat Nov 09: Will took a load of oatss to the Samish. Self down to Lee's to see the Perry load oats. Lee has sold his oats for $10.10 per ton. Pearl & self went to town in the P.M. and it rained most of the time.
Sun Nov 10: Heavy shower this A.M. and most of the night it rained. Went to B.V. Rev Baker preached from Mathew 5-6. Went to church in the eve. Rev Wright preached. [margin: Lillie had a calf.]
Mon Nov 11: A fine day. Gathered & hauled in the beets. Self fixed a saw for Will. Christ Fassel helped him. Went to B.V. in the eve. Mr Wright preached. [margin: Rec'd a letter from Geo. S.]
Tue Nov 12: Rainy day. Not doing much but chores. Was up to Kalso's in the P.M. and went to B.V. to the temperance lecture by Mr. Edwards Esq.

Wed Nov 13: Rain a good deal of the day. Choring out. Moved the stove in to the kitchen. Settled up with Will. Did not go to church this eve. Too dark & windy.
Thu Nov 14: Another rainy day. Not doing much but chores. Set up the stove up stairs. Warm but wet.
Fri Nov 15: Not much rain. Choring was up to Bartletts & bot a stove for the girls room.
Sat Nov 16: Done the chores & went to LaConner.
Sun Nov 17: Rainy in the A.M. Will & self went to town to the Men's meeting.
Mon Nov 18: Done the chores was up to Kalso' & got the wagon. Had two colts sick with botts. Went & got Elliott. Mrs. Rains & Mrs Finch came near getting drowned & was here all night.
Tue Nov 19: Went to Bay View & took Mrs. Rains home. She could not sit up. Went to church in the eve.
Wed Nov 20: Began working on the dyke scraping. Bartlett & team, Lee, Will McKenna & teaam, Kalso's team & Smiths, self & team. Had to quit for rain at 230. Went to church in the P.M. or eve.
Thu Nov 21: Not doing much in the A.M. but chores & went to town in the P.M. Got Charley show, subscribed for the Daily P.I. 6 months. Ida & the girls & Will went to church. Lee & Will McK. topping out dyke in the P.M. Kalso & Smith scraping up dyke some.
Fri Nov 22: Fine day. Hard frost this A.M. Dyking, Lee, Will Mc & team. Kalso(Smith) & team, Bartlett & team & self. Chris Fassel for Kalso. Ida & Grant over to Kate's. Will & the girls went to church. [margin: Hard frost.]

Mon Nov 25: (Diary says Nov 26th) Will & Star hauling hay for Tholstrup and wood for me. 6 cords. Self on the dyke 3/4 (Lee & team) (Smith & Chriss & team 1/2 Kalso.) Was at church in the eve.
Tue Nov 26: (Diary says Nov 27th) Stormy day, not doing much but chores. Went to church in the eve at B.V.
Wed Nov 27: Another stormy. Allen's folks here all night.
Thu Nov 28: Mr Wrights folks here last night & this A.M. went to church in the eve. Stormy part of the time.
Fri Nov 29: Still stormy & windy, Will took a load of stuff to the Samish. Ida & I went to town in the P.M.
Sat Nov 30: Wet & warm. Nettie's birthday. A party here this eve for her. Rainy evening, but a nice time for the young folks.

Sun Dec 01: Pleasant A.M. and a low tide for full moon. Went church in the eve. Rain in the eve.
Mon Dec 02: Rec'd letters from Geo. & Father. Will's folks went to Samish to day. I hauled a load of hay to Price & a load of wood home and took team to the Samish.
Tue Dec 03: Went to dyke elections and to church in the eve. Baker preached.
Wed Dec 04: Worked on the dyke with Lee in the A.M. & want to town in the P.M. to get the preacher. Went to Bay View in the eve. Mr Abbott preached.
Thu Dec 05: Not doing much but chores. Went to church in the eve. Abbott preached. Self had a bad cold.
Fri Dec 06: Rainy. Went to Bay View in the P.M. to Baptist meeting. Abbott preach this eve but I did not go, sick. [margin: English brot the plates 178 pcs.]
Sat Dec 07: Rainy last night. Not very well. Mr Abbott here. Sold Esary's boys a load of oats.
Sun Dec 08: Pleasant day but hard rain in the eve. All went to church. Rev Abbott preached A.M. & P.M. Baptists had a meeting this P.M. & took in several members. Mr Abbott & Ida came home in the rain.
Mon Dec 09: Another stormy day. Not doing much but chores. Mr. Abbott here. Pretty high tide.

Tue Dec 10: Went to LaConner and took Abbott. Warm. Rainy at night. J. Gaches here & got a sample of oats. Did chores, went up to Bartletts and down to the dams, stick in the box.
Wed Dec 11: At home all day. Warm & windy.
Thu Dec 12: Went to LaConner to settle up with Alf on Aunt Lou's account. He paid me $817.00. Sold Hanson some hay, 5 tons, he paid $10.00 on it. Wrote to Aunt Lou & G. Sisson. [margin: Rainy P.M. & eve.]
Fri Dec 13: Rainy last night & some to day. Sold Tom Esary 1885 lbs hay. He did not pay for it.
Sat Dec 14: High wind & some rain. Was down on the dyke 3 hours this A.M. and was up to Geo Jennes' in the P.M. to see Otto's dyke. Very windy.
Sun Dec 15: Went to church at B.V. Mr. Derbyshire was the preacher. About 4 inches of snow, but not very cold. [margin: Snow.]
Mon Dec 16: Snowy. Was up to Jenne's helping him get ready to move. Cold night. [margin: Snowy.]
Tue Dec 17: Not doing much but chores. John Ball here to settle up. Mr. Abbott here also. [margin: Mercury at 23°]
Wed Dec 18: Warm. Snow going off. Went to the meeting in Bay View in Bay View and was down to Esary's to dinner. Went to church in the eve. Abbott & Baker there.
Thu Dec 19: Snow gone. Went to Bay View in the P.M. Rain. Rain hard last night and some tonight. Mrs McKown taken to the Asylum yesterday. Will here to dinner.
Fri Dec 20: Stormy. Self & Ida went to town. Rec'd a P.O order from Purdy for dike bill. [margin: Rain & hail]
Sat Dec 21: Pleasant day, Walter here this A.M. cleaning oats for cow feed. In the P.M. went to Bay View to pay up dyke bills. Frosty at night.
Sun Dec 22: Did not go any where to day. No preaching in B.V. Wrote to Aunt Frank(?). Ed Stacey here and Walter.
Mon Dec 23: Walter & self went to town with a load of oats and broke the wagon tongue. Terrible strong wind all night and most of the day.
Tue Dec 24: At home all day. Stormy rain & snow. Walter took his feed up home. Was down fixing dyke a few minutes in the P.M. by the box. Self & the children went to B.V. Christmas tree in the eve.
Wed Dec 25: Rainy A.M. and strong west wind all the after part of the day. Tides not running very high now. E. Axel & Jon Wilson here. Went up to Kalso's in the P.M. and down to look at the dyke in the eve.
Thu Dec 26: Another windy day. Was down to the dyke sharpening post an hour or so. Sold Esary Dave some hay.
Fri Dec 27: Done the chores & went to town with Ida in the P.M. Mr Baker was here and some others in the eve to bible study. Pleasant P.M. but cool. Ida had a tooth pulled.
Sat Dec 28: Not doing much. Went down to the dyke a while digging ditch for posts. Frank White & wife here all night.
Sun Dec 29: Windy. At home all day. Franks folks here.
Mon Dec 30: Windy. Done the chores and not much else.
Tue Dec 31: Another high tide & west wind. Came near being flooded worked most of the day on the dyke and till 12 oclock or the end of the year. This was the highest tide in 10 years except the one last year. Moon full to day at 3 P.M. [margin: Very windy all day. High tide.]

Wed Jan 01: Ten inches of snow to day & some wind but not very cold. Don Palmer here. Tide fell off more that a foot today from yesterday.
Thu Jan 02: Clear & pleasant and good sleighing. Wrote to Nettie this eve. Had company from LaConner. This evening also. [margin: Mercury at 22°]
Fri Jan 03: Warmer & the snow going off. Went to town in the P.M. to take D. Palmer. Got pack of envelopes, a sack of O meal. Tides have bee hoe since Tuesday.
Sat Jan 04: Warmer. Snow gone and raining most of the day. Washed & oiled the single harness.
