Thu Dec 22: Cold day mercury at 20 & freezing all day. Will went to town. Self cutting wood & doing chores. Put Maude colt in the barn, she is growing poor.
Fri Dec 23: 26° warmer with rain & sleet. Will not doing anthing but chores. Self went to town after Ida & Grant. Roy's baby getting better.
Sat Dec 24: Miserable disagreeable day. Cold rain. Will not working nor self either. Sent Pavitt some oats 3 sks 315 lbs. Christmas eve.
Sun Dec 25: Lovely day. Ida sick with a bad cold. Rather a dull Christmas at this house. Rain in the evening. Warm.
Mon Dec 26: Rain last ight & today. Very springy weather. Will doing chores.
Tue Dec 27: Hauling lumber from Fredonia for rollers & granary, also hay. Warm & pleasant.
Wed Dec 28: Will went to the mill with hay & got a load of lumber. Windy & rainy in the A.M. but warm. Self filing saws and grinding axes. Will washing harness & self working on roller lumber up at the hay barn. Terrible windy & stormy in the P.M. Birdie Peck here this week and Pearl is home. 6 hours on rollers.
Thu Dec 29: Will washing harness. Self working at the rollers. Stormy part of the day. The girls went to Wilson's. 5 hours.
Fri Dec 30: Stormy day all day. Will away Odd Fellowing. Self working at the rollers. 6 hours. Brot the colts up & put them in the hay barn. Land very wet but grass looking well.
Sat Dec 31: Last day. Clowdy dark day. Will oiling & working at the harness. Self went to town to take the girls. Ordered irons for rollers.

January 1893

Sun Jan 01: Went to B.V. to church. Warm & pleasant day.
Mon Jan 02: Warm & pleasant. Rain some last night. Will ditching & choring. Fixed timber to put under the granary. Self working on rollers. 3 hours. Mailed a letter to Geo.
Tue Jan 03: Stormy day most of the day. Will helping Lee load hay 3/4. Self working on rollers. 6 hours. Have all the wheels made & 2x pieces lagging fixed. Lee's hay all sold.
Wed Jan 04: Pleasant day & warm. Worked on rollers 2 hours. Will helping Lee 1/2 & hauling fence posts & rails in the P.M. Self put more timber under the granary and shot dog at Ball's sheep.
Thu Jan 05: Will went up to Bob's to cut ditch timber. Self working on rollers 6 hours. Wrote to Aunt Lou. Rain a little, but not much.

Fri Jan 06: Will hauling ditch timber. Self worked on rollers 2 hours. Fine day. Self went to Fredonia in the P.M. & sold young 5 tons hay at $8. here. To be paid in lumber & shingles.
Sat Jan 07: Will deer hunting. Self done the chores & made a hay truck. Lovely spring day. Young got a load of hay. 1560 lbs.
Sun Jan 08: Self & Nettie went to B.V. to church. In the P.M. Ida & I went up to Mr Wilsons calling. foggy day. Frost 27° this A.M.
Mon Jan 09: Still foggy. Took a scow load of hay up to the R.R. bridge for Young. 33 bales, 10195 lbs. Will cutting ditch timber some in the P.M.
Tue Jan 10: Rain all last night. Not doing much. Will helping Lee kill pigs in the A.M. & cutting ditch timber in the P.M.
Wed Jan 11: Bailer staid here all last night. Lee & I gave him an order for 1/2 ton of oats "prize taker". Will went up the slough after the scow of lumber & shingles. Self went to town with Lee, B.
Thu Jan 12: Will ditching. Self unloading scow & went to B.V. ditching in the P.M. Fine day. Frost this A.M. Got 28° about.
Fri Jan 13: Lovely day. Got a offer from Lerevick for hay & oats. Will & self ditching out by the hay barn lot.
Sat Jan 14: Will & self ditching. Frost. Fine weather. Walter got the bal of his ton of oats. 2095 lbs or 23 dollars worth. Paid $10. Got an offer from Levevick for hay & oats and sent him word that I would take it. viz $22 for oats and $8. for hay. Have 40 rods of ditch laird out and well started.
Sun Jan 15: Pleasant day. Light frost. Did not go any where. Will Hunt over to Wills sick.
Mon Jan 16: Frost 22°. Will ditching. Self tinkering. Jacobson's child died yesterday & was buried to day. Finished putting in timber in the 42 rods of ditch by the hay barn or in the hay barn lot. Leggit is finishing up the Dick Ball plank road and we can soon go to LaC. in good shape.
Tue Jan 17: Frost this A.M. 25°. Fine day for work of any kind. Will hauling wood for self. Self fixing boat and choring about.
Wed Jan 18: Another fine day. Will hauled a load of ditch timber & in the P.M. we hauled in bedding and a load of hay for the colts. Rec'd a check of $200. from Lerevick(?) for hay & grain.
Thu Jan 19: Another fine day. Grandma started for Anacortes. Will & self went to town. Frost about 28°.
Fri Jan 20: Light frost. Will & self ditching & cutting ditch timber across the road. Alf & Susie here after chickens. Pearl came home this eve. Lovely weather. Ground dry enough to plow.

Sun Jan 22: Staid at home most of the day. Stormy. Was calling down to Bradley's in the P.M.
Mon Jan 23: Worked on rollers 3 hours. Warm & wet. Ida went to town to take Pearl. "Fanny Lake" here for oats & hay for Zomerekh & Atkinson Seattle. She took 20 tons of hay & 256 sks oats.
Tue Jan 24: Will ditching 3 hours. Self went to town. Settled up with John Peth. Will ditching across the road.
Wed Jan 25: Sent Geo his interest money. Self working on rollers 7 hours. Bebber here to dinner. Will finished the ditch and began filling. Colder with north wind. Mercury at 24 at 9 P.M.
Thu Jan 26: Mercury at 17° this A.M. Coldest A.M. so far for the winter. Will & self hauling straw covering carrots and fixing the wharf up at the hay barn. Cold with north wind.
Fri Jan 27: Cold. Mer at 24. Snowing lightly all day. Will oiling harness and helping fix up the wharf by the hay barn.
Sat Jan 28: Still cold and blustering about 1 1/2 in of snow. Mercury at 20 this eve. Self not doing much but shores and went to the depot for Grandma who came from Anacortes. Will washing and oiling harness. Lee came from Seattle this eve. Heard that James G. Blaine died yesterday A.M.
Sun Jan 29: Mercury at 17° this A.M. Snow about 2 inches deep frequent snow squalls all last night and strong north E.
Mon Jan 30: Mercury at 16° this A.M. & at zero at 10 P.M. About the coldest day on record in this country. Will working at the harness, self choring and made a sled box.
Tue Jan 31: 6 below zero. Coldest A.M. in 20 years and don't know how much more. Clear with a stinging east wind. 7° at 8 P.M.

February 1893

Wed Feb 01: 16 above zero this A.M. Snowing & blowing fearfully. Doing nothing but chores. Snow 6 or 7 inches where it is not drifted. Mercury 8 above zero at 9 P.M.
Thu Feb 02: 4 above zero and no prospect of warming up. Went to town windy & snowing. Coldest day I was ever out in this country. Sleighing good. Mercury at 8° in the P.M. and 16 at 9 P.M. Will went to town also.
Fri Feb 03: Mercury at 16. to 18. Snow a good part of the day. Wind still in the N.E. Not doing anything but chores. Ther. at 16 at 9 P.M.
Sat Feb 04: Mercury at 20. A little snow but pleasant most of the day.

Sun Feb 05: Went to B.V. to church in slay (sleigh) Pleasant. Alf & Susie here to dinner.
Mon Feb 06: Went to LaConner and took Pearl. Will not doing much. Slaying fine. Weather pleasant. Snow at night.
Tue Feb 07: Three inches of snow last night. Warm to day with an east wind. Will went after his groceries. Self & Ida went to B.V. took dinner with McKenna's. It has snow every day or night for the past 12 days.
Wed Feb 08: Will & folks up to Ball's. Self battering up the granary. Snowing in the A.M. but weather quite warm.
Thu Feb 09: Will working in the woods cutting wood. Self working on hay barn wharf and 4 hours on roller. Warmer. Snow going.
Fri Feb 10: Snow still going but lots of ice in the slough yet. Will in the woods. Self at the rollers 7 hours. Pleasant.
Sat Feb 11: Southwind & some rain, some ice in the slough yet. Will to the woods. Self on the roller 7 1/2 hours. Am about done with the rollers all but the seats.
Sun Feb 12: Rain most all last night. Frost most out of the ground. Grass looks pretty brown & frost bitten. Rain hard in the P.M. Did not go to church. Geo Alverson's baby buried to day.
Mon Feb 13: Pleasant day. Will went to the woods. Self finished the rollers and made a pump for the tank by the barn. Rec'd a letter from Geo & the interest note.
Tue Feb 14: No rain. Not doing very much. Hauled the frozen carrots down from the hay barn and fixed the wharf some. Went in the P.M. to stake out the channel but had to give it up. Tide not low enough. Ed Stacey's folks here this eve.
Wed Feb 15: At home all day. Very stormy in the A.M. & last night. Ed started for Mt. Vernon. Will & self working on fence in the P.M. on the Whitney land by the orchard. Tank sprung a leak.
Thu Feb 16: Setting fence posts and loading steamer Fanny lake. Took oats seed 20 tone hay. Pleasant day. Rain all last night. Self wedging up the tank & stopped some of the leak.
Fri Feb 17: Will not working, sick. Self went to town. Took dinner at Tillinghast's. Mary Stacey went and stayed at Alf's. Pleasant day. Ground wet & roads muddy. Signed for Miss Starts(?) book to be delivered in April. Tillinghast making a hot bed. Andrews still sick but they think is gaining slowly.

Sat Feb 18: Will not doing very well. He done chores and picked over potatos. Self cleaning up front yard and making fence on the Whitney piece. Warm & clowdy & rain in the evening.
Sun Feb 19: Warm & clowdy. All at home all day. Alf's folks here and brot Mary home with them.
Mon Feb 20: Pleasant day & quite warm. Finished the garden fence & in the P.M. Staked in the slough channel steamer stakes. Will went to the woods and sawed ditch T. Rec'd a letter from D.M. Leamer, H.E. Davey and Atkinson & Zerumb? with check for $438.63 hay.
Tue Feb 21: Rainy some early in the A.M. Moved some hay over near the door. Got the fanning mill & cleaned 0 sks oats for seed. Went to Kalso to see about his hay. Wrote to Atkinson & Zerwekh. Pleasant P.M.
Wed Feb 22: Clowdy & rainy day. Finished the fence by the garden & put the wire on it. Then finished cleaning the grain for seed 150 sks and have 161 sks left for feed besides sweepings & screenings. Old Folks concert at B.V. to night.
Thu Feb 23: Went to LaConner. Sent $10 to Sunderland & bot a dft for Geo Sisson for $500. Will went to the timber to make ditch timber. Land very wet. Got Grant a pair of gum boots.
Fri Feb 24: Rainy most of the day. Will cleaned out the chicken house. We fixed the foundation to the granary & also under the house.
Sat Feb 25: Will went to the woods. Self done the chores & cut thistles out of the pasture lot north of the house. Pleasant day.
Sun Feb 26: Frost. Pleasant day. Str Ann Pence here this A.M. for hay & took 203 bales for A. & Z. At home all day. Wrote to Geo.
Mon Feb 27: Frost. Steamer Fanny lake here for hay & took over 29 tons for A & Z. Seattle. In the P.M. Will hauled out straw manure from stack bottom. Self cutting thistles north of the house & find them very thick.
Tue Feb 28: Frost. Self cutting thistles all day. Will & the women folks went to town. Pleasant & spring like. Nettie went to town. Phil Bartlett here & got a load of straw.

March 1893

Wed Mar 01: Will hauling out manure in the A.M. self piling up stack foundation & went to Kalsos. In the P.M. began plowing in the slough in the Whitney ranch. Book agent here at dinner.
Thu Mar 02: Scraping all day filling slough. Fine weather. Ground drying fast.
Fri Mar 03: Filling slough & digging out blue grass in the orchard.

Sun Mar 05: Went to LaC. to church & staid up over night at Alf's & Roy's. Heard Rev. Dulin. Two good sermons. Pleasant.
Mon Mar 06: Came from LaC. at noon. Will plowing. Land in good order. South wind all day. Looks like rain. Grants foot wear. has cast 635? since Nov.
Tue Mar 07: Very windy but no rain Will plowing all day. Self 3/4 day with the mares. Land in fine order for the season.
Wed Mar 08: Fine weather. Frost. Plowing with 2 teams. Land in fine order. Quit at 4.30 & went to Bay View to meeting. Sanderston(?) preached.
Thu Mar 09: Plowing with two teams. Alf here and got some oats for Tillinghast. 10 sks. The San Juan oats came. Sent a check for mine & Lee's $20.00.
Fri Mar 10: Went to plow & finished the 14 acre piece. Rainy some in the P.M. Plowed the garden. Will killed the pig. Windy night.
Sat Mar 11: Will & self both plowing across the road. Land in fine order. Strong S.E. wind all day. Have 38 15 40 acres to plow yet. Think it will take 9 or 10 days.
Sun Mar 12: Pleasant but cool. Grass growing very slow. Ida sick. Nettie & self went to B.V. to church. Grandma came home from Fulks.
Mon Mar 13: Frost. Dry & cool. Plowing with 2 teams. Rec'd a letter from Geo. Sisson.
Tue Mar 14: Plowing with 2 teams. Dry & cool. Went to church in the P.M. Rev. Davis preached.
Wed Mar 15: Plowing with 2 teams. Pleasant & warmer. Daisy had a B. calf. Have a trifle over 20 acres to plow to night. John Ball nearly done plowing on the house ranch.
Thu Mar 16: Will plowing 1/2 Wheel harrow 4 hours. Self wheel harrow on sod 1/2. Steamer F. Lake here after the hay and brot the brick(?) and groceries.
Fri Mar 17: Cold east wind. Will plowing 3/4. Rain a little after dinner. Self disk harrow 1/2 and cutting thistles & choring 1/2.
Sat Mar 18: Will finished plowing sod and self working disk harrow all day on sod. Cold & windy. Grass not growing much. Wrote to Cooper & Levy about bill.

Wed Mar 29: Will plowing in the A.M. self cutting thistles. Alf down to dinner. Rain in the P.M.
Thu Mar 30: Summers & Miss Feather this A.M. and last night. Will & self hauled some baled hay & feed oats & in the P.M. we went to town & Will made a calf yard. Rain some in the A.M.
Fri Mar 31: Rec'd letter from Geo. Will went to the Island to Plow. Windy day. Self cutting thistles along the road.

April 1893

Sat Apr 01: Rainy day, doing nothing but chores. Land very wet. The rain cold.
Sun Apr 02: Easter. Clowdy cold, snow & rain mixed. Did not go to church. Lee & his mother here in the P.M. or eve & Will's folks to dinner.
Mon Apr 03: Cold, wet, windy. Will hauled a load of wood for the school house. School began worked in the P.M. some putting batters on the granary. Wrote to Geo.
Tue Apr 04: Not doing much in the A.M. weight the horses. Charley 1200, Frank 1320, Maud 1100, Jean 1088, Star 1115. In the P.M. we went to Bob Woodburns & cut some more ditch timber. No rain to speak of.

Thu Apr 06: Another hard rain last night & today. Will doing nothing. Self choring & put a window in the granary & put light in the shop window. Ida & Pearl came home at 4 P.M.
Fri Apr 07: Rain again last night. Land very et & no prospect for sowing oats for a week at least. Will to the Island self choring & cutting thistles.
Sat Apr 08: Cold & clowdy but no rain. Will plowing on the Island. Self packing up carrots & choring. Was down to the school house fixing seats &c.
Sun Apr 09: Cold wind & a shower in the P.M. Went to church at B.V. got the book "Columbus & Columbia". Poor prospect for sowing oats.
Mon Apr 10: Will went to the Island. Took Maud. Self choring.
Tue Apr 11: Will over to the Island. Self done the chores & went to La.C. for Mrs B. & Tillinghast. Rain some.
Wed Apr 12: Showery & cold. The women all went to Anacortes. Self not doing much. Land not fit to harrow. Will over to the Island.
Thu Apr 13: Another rainy day. Self reading "Donovan". Will at the Island.
Fri Apr 14: Rain a considerable last night. Cold & windy. Reading ""Donovan"". No sowing oats. Balls folks plowing, but it is very wet. Cons? doing well.
Sat Apr 15: No rain to day but clowdy. Will came home in the eve. Self mowed the lawn & done the chores. Mama and Grant not home yet. Planted some garden stuff this eve.
Sun Apr 16: Strong S.E. wind like more rain. Went to B.V. to hear Goodell. L??? Psalm 5th 3d verse. Road muddy & wet. Ida & Grant in Anacortes yet.
Mon Apr 17: Will plowing in cabbage patch in the A.M. and hauling wood for himself in the P.M. Self went to town with Lee in the P.M. Cold drying day, but a shower in the eve.
Tue Apr 18: More rain. Not doing much but chores. Mowed the lawn & leveled it.
Wed Apr 19: Wettish. Mending sacks. Went to the woods in the P.M. to hunt for shake timber but did not find any.

Fri Apr 21: Ida came home & Mrs W. came with her. Self reading ""Warlock o' Glenwarlock"". Rain again tonight.
Sat Apr 22: Digging a ditch in the orchard & started for town after dinner with Maud and she got sick, had to come back. Rain all the after noon.
Sun Apr 23: Rainy day. did not go any where. Mrs. W. here to dinner & staid all night.
Mon Apr 24: Pleasant day with a little mist in the A.M. Went to town & bot Wills calf and a grass seeder 1/2 interest.
Tue Apr 25: Will finished the ditch in the orchard and began fixing a drain under the road out by Purdy's granary. Self cut thistles & went to Kalso's in the P.M. Pleasant day.
Wed Apr 26: Went to the Whitney sale. The land averaged about $103 per acre on average. Pleasant day.
Thu Apr 27: Clowdy day but no rain. Began seeding. Self ditching in the Whitney lake. Preacher Goodell's folks here in the P.M.
Fri Apr 28: Finished seeding the 17 acre piece. Land not in good order, but getting very grassy. Self rough harrowing. No rain but clowdy. Land in very bad condition for this time of year. Will & self both got bad colds. Twenty five sacks sowed. Arlie Whitney here yet.
Sat Apr 29: Misty and clowdy. Doing nothing of any account in the A.M. Darcy's calf sick. Will & self harrowing in the P.M. Pleasant.
Sun Apr 30: Self at home with a cold. Pleasant. Ida & the girls went to church.

May 1893

Mon May 01: Rainy till 10 A.M. Will seeding sod in the P.M. self went to LaC. in the P.M. got grass seeding box.
Tue May 02: Will seeding till 4 P.M. Drizzly day. Self harrowing 6 hours. Land wet & sticky. Fulk here & got 22 sks of seed oats at $28. which to 32 dollars to be paid for this fall. Have 35 acres seeded. Sent interest money to G.S. & F.J. money order. Hard shower at 5 P.M.
Wed May 03: Rainy A.M. Not doing much in the A.M. self mowed the lawn in the A.M. & Will harrowed the potato ground &c. In the P.M. Will seeding. Self harrowing. Finished the Whitney Patch. 44 acres.
Thu May 04: Will seeding 1/2 & harrowing 1/2. 53 acres in. Self harrowing. Misty. Ida went to LaC. with rhubarb. 114 lbs to Carlson.

Sat May 06: Finest day of the season until 5 P.M. when it clowded up ad sprinkled some. Both harrowing on the Whitney land. All done but the ""lake"" which is wet. Warmest day of spring so far.
Sun May 07: Rain nearly all last night & today. Land full of water again. This is about like the year 1880. The rain is warm which is better than cold. Grain is liable to be very weedy this year as well as late. A dull day.
Mon May 08: Pleasant drying day. Ditching & cutting thistles. Wills birthday party. Wilson's & Mrs Bradley here to supper or at times.
Tue May 09: Self not working. Off on Dr. Hands tensions(?). Will ditching & hauling wood. Clowdy & misty & cold.
Wed May 10: Cows had company. Will & self went to town in the A.M. Will harrowing in the P.M. Self sowing grass seed. Pleasant. Ida up to Grays.
Thu May 11: Fixing the road crossing. Plowed the garden & went to the saw mill. Clowdy. Mrs Gray sick. Ida up to Mrs Gray's.
Fri May 12: Pleasant day. Ground drying fast. Seeding & harrowing 16 1/2 acres.
Sat May 13: Ditto yesterday. Finished all but the cabbage lot.
Sun May 14: Pleasant drying day. did not go to church. Went up to preacher Gray's in the P.M. Mrs. Gray some better.
Mon May 15: Will harrowing. Self sowing grass seed. Sowed about 15 acres. Fine day. Grain all up on this side of the road. Land getting quite dry.
Tue May 16: Clowdy & showery. Harrowing with two teams across the road. Finished.
Wed May 17: Rainy day. Did not do much but chores. Will mending sacks. Self sifting grass seed & went to the Island with Lee. Ida staid at Gray's last night and tonight also Mrs Gray no better.
Thu May 18: Ida at Gray's. Rain most of the day. Doing nothing.
Fri May 19: No rain to speak of. Washed wagons in the A.M. In the P.M. self went to town and Will hauled a load of lumber for hay shed. Ida came home. Mrs Gray some better.
Sat May 20: Rain some in the A.M. and last night. In the P.M. draining off water some. Ida went to Grays in the eve. Land wet.

Sat May 27: Warm & pleasant. Will working in the garden harrowing and planting potatos. Self sowed grass seed on barley patch. Alf & Susie here last night & Ed to day & family. Planted beets, turnips, onions, parsnips & mangolds. Ground looking badly and slough banks not looking very well.
Sun May 28: Clowdy but not much rain. Went to church at B.V.
Mon May 29: Will & team working on the road. Self harrowing in the barley. Warm & pleasant. Ground soft so had to put socks on the horses feet.
Tue May 30: Rain most of the day but not hard until the P.M. All went to Decoration Services at Pleasant Ridge and had dinner at Martha's. Many not done seeding yet and raining hard at 8 P.M. Rec'd a letter from Geo.

Sun Jun 04: Ida & I went to LaConner and heard Rev Flunor(?) preach. Took dinner at Georgia's. Fine pleasant day. Grain growing well.
Mon Jun 05: Warmest day of the season. Will rolling grain. Self cutting weeds and laying floor in the wood house for a summer kitchen. Land drying up fast. Everett Wallace went away again. Ball still seeding & Dick Peth also. Barley just coming up. Grain looking middling well.
Tue Jun 06: Will working on the road. Self pulling(?) weeds some. Mowed the lawn. Pland some peas. Warm south wind. Grain not looking first class. Ground leaking badly. Alf send his harness down for me by Soderburg. P. Walter had the team yesterday and to day. Radish driving it.
Wed Jun 07: Will hauling sand and gravel for chickens. Out family went to LaC. to attend the association. Except Nettie and Pearl. Clowdy.

Fri Jun 09: Pearl 16 to day. Came from LaC. will hauling stove wood. Birdie Peck came home with us. Rain in the P.M. The Whitney girls here tonight.
Sat Jun 10: Strong south wind. Stormy day. Started to go to Mt. Erie but gave it up ad staid at Kate's for dinner. Heavy showers of rain in the P.M. and one of hail.
Sun Jun 11: Went to church at LaConner with Pearl & Bird Peck. Rev Pierce preached. Cool and windy.
Mon Jun 12: Sonderburg came and began the chimney & Will helping him. Self cutting holes for chimneys. Pleasant day. Went to school election in the P.M.
Tue Jun 13: All working ath the chimneys. Have two finished. Clowdy & cool. Not very good growing weather.
Wed Jun 14: Working at the chimneys, but had to quit twice for rain. Self laying wood house floor and setting up stoves, fixing pipes & a hard shower in the P.M.
Thu Jun 15: Another heavy shower this A.M. Will went to LaConner. Self helping Soderburg. Was out and looked at the grain. Ground very wet.

Sat Jun 24: Went on a picknick to Mt. Erie about 30 went. Not a very pleasant day too clowdy. Got home at 6.30 P.M. All went.
Sun Jun 25: Went to church at B.V. in the A.M. Frank and Blanch White here in the P.M. Pleasant.
Mon Jun 26: Went to LaConner in the A.M. & got Miss Klein and Aunt Lou's money. Will painting lower roof. Self hoing garden and cutting thistles. Pleasant.
Tue Jun 27: Walter, self & Will on barn putting up rafters & sheeting. Lovely day. Oats growing pretty well. Pastures not as good as last year this time. Taylor Bros. had 3110 lbs of oats and have not showed the color of their money yet. $46.60.
Wed Jun 28: Working on barn planking up & putting on shakes.
Thu Jun 29: Working on the barn 1/2 shaking. Will went to Ridgway for a load of shakes in the P.M. Self went to the logging camp in the P.M. to see about oat money. Got a promise of it the 15th of July.
Fri Jun 30: Fine weather all this week so far. Working on barn all day except 2 hours when Will was pulling weeds & making a fence around the barn.

Sat Jul 01: Self working on barn all day. Will one half. Will went to saw mill in the A.M. for lumber. Miss Klein has been here all week dressmaking.
Sun Jul 02: Started to go to church but heard the preacher was sick. Pleasant day. Blackie had a calf.
Mon Jul 03: Went to LaConner. Saw a game of ball. LaConner won. Will in town on hay press business. Did not go to the horse race.

Tue Jul 04: Light shower in the A.M. all went to town to spend the 4th. Weather pleasant and lots of people there, but not much else. Got home at 7 P.M.
Wed Jul 05: Rain most of the day & good rain for late grain. Will & self in the house painting and papering.
Thu Jul 06: Rain a good part of the day & A.M. clowdy. P.M. painting & papering and in the P.M. picking berries. Picked about 100 lbs more or less. Gave Kate a lot of them.
Fri Jul 07: Will not working went to Anacortes for his hay press. Self working in the hay barn, making stack ladder, &c. Pleasant.
Sat Jul 08: Drizzling rain all day and heavy rain in the evening. Cultivate & hoed the potatos and garden and pulled weeds out of the grain in the P.M. Wrote to father in the P.M. eve. The grain in the lower field is very short & poor. I don't think it can make of 600 sks or 500.
Sun Jul 09: Pleasant day. Heavy rain last night . Did not go any where to day. Ald & susie here this P.M. Finished my letter to father to day.
Mon Jul 10: Went to LaConner and on the John Ball road view. Will painting the house roof & porch floors & pulling weeds. He hauled a load of my wood in the P.M. for himself.
Tue Jul 11: Working on barn all day. Building hay track and putt on shakes. Clowdy but no rain. Lee began mowing.
Wed Jul 12: Will hauling old straw & manure out of the barn. Self built a ladder and finish putting on shakes. Poor hay weather. Lots of men looking for work. Baileys folks returned from Pa. Ida went to town this P.M. for Mrs. T. but she did not come.
Thu Jul 13: Will went to the mill for lumber and in the P.M. hauled threshing wood. Self on barn all day tearing out the old rafters & making door.
Fri Jul 14: Will hauling wood & ditch timber in the A.M. & cultivating garden in the P.M. Self on barn making doors &c.
Sat Jul 15: Will hauled a load of ditch timber & put 30 sks oats in the bin in the A.M. In the P.M. mowed the lawn, cut thistles, &c. Self working at the hay rig in the A.M. & went to town in the P.M. Got 2 sks flour and the hay rope.
Sun Jul 16: Went to LaConner to hear Mr Flenors first sermon & took dinner with Dr. Carter at Georgia's. Went to church in the eve & came home at 10.30 P.M. Pleasant.
Mon Jul 17: Clowdy day. Got out the haying machinery & fixed it up ready to mow. In the P.M. hauled rubbish away from the new barn & went down to get the stack poles out of the meadow. Poor hay making. Hay in full bloom, but ought to be cut soon. Is quite ripe in the bottom. Lots of men looking for work.

Thu Sep 28: Too rainy for threshing. Cleaning screenings & grass seed. Grass seed 1.00. Esary 177 lbs barley.
Fri Sep 29: Cleaning screenings & greased in the A.M. & took a load of hay to Esary in the P.M. 2680 lbs. Self went to Bartletts & Kalso's to get money orders.

Mon Oct 02: Self & Will went to town in the A.M. Will threshing in the P.M. for Bartlett & Byron??. Vail here in the P.M. & bot the oats at 17.00 per ton 7000 sks. Rain nearly all last night. Very damp threshing.

November 1893

Wed Nov 01: Self came home. Found the folks all sick.
Thu Nov 02: Rainy day Will not working.
Fri Nov 03: Raining all last night and to day also. Bad weather to do anything.
Sat Nov 04: Rain nearly all last night and was misty today. Dave Fulk was here to day and paid for his oats. Morrow paid $5.00 on act. Will not working. Self went to the station for mail. May B home from the Fair. Raining heavily to night.
Sun Nov 05: Rainy & misty. Very dull day. did not go any where. Grant & Ida little better. Grandma about the same.
Mon Nov 06: Will sick not doing anything. Self choring a little. Not much rain but very windy. Tom Esary here for hay. Good dry oats are now worth $18. per ton.
Tue Nov 07: Terrible wind all last night. Will hauled a load of hay to Tom Esary in the A.M. Self loaded the hay and went to Fredonia & bot some potatos.
Wed Nov 08: Will went to ?????? to get potatos. Self went to town. Cold & raw but no rain.
Thu Nov 09: Will hauling out a straw stack bottom. Self to Dick Peth's in the P.M. to get seed oats. Will hauling oats from Peth's in the P.M.
Fri Nov 10: Will hauling seed oats. Finished 134 sks or $114. worth at $18. per ton. Paid $30. Lovely day. Self up to Smiths to see about getting timber & dug potatos in the P.M. & put a gate on the John Ball sluice box.
Sat Nov 11: Self filling ditch & splitting timber. Will hauling timber from Smith's. Pleasant.

Sun Nov 12: Rainy all the A.M. Staid at home all day. Will sick & Grandma also.
Mon Nov 13: Will went for a load of ditch rails to Smith's & in the P.M. moving hay press. Self splitting timber & filling ditch. Pleasant.
Tue Nov 14: Will filling ditch in the "80" & in the P.M. he and Lee killed the calf. Self & Ida went to town for baling wire & groceries. Fine weather. Good many plowing. Oats worth a little over 18. dollars now. John Ball shipped a load to day for Utsalady. Bot 100 lbs sugar, 2 sks flour, &c.
Wed Nov 15: Began baling but had to quit for rain at 12.30. Rainy & misty the balance of the day.
Thu Nov 16: Baling hay. Fine weather. Have about 19 tons out now. 166 bales. Fred Kalso, Smith, Sorenson, Will and the Osborns helping. Bebber & Ed Stacey here to dinner.
Fri Nov 17: Baling hay fine weather. Finished 1/2 the old barn & moved. Mercury at 28. [margin: 28°.]
Sat Nov 18: Baling hay. Walter helping. Clear & frosty. Have about 52 tons baled. Have pressed about 2300 ???? and have about 1700 left to night. [margin: 24°]

Mon Nov 27: Rain most of the A.M. Hay bales began for Lee. Tholstrup got my wagon to hay bark?. Self fixed up a place to feed horses & went to see the stock across the road. Found them doing well but feed getting short.

Thu Nov 30: Stormy day. Woodburn at Bradleys setting hay press. Self went to LaConner & to church. Heard Rev Fleenor preach. Got Charley shod and haircut and got feed for Will.

Fri Dec 01: Rain most of the A.M. Cut up the meat. Done chores and worked on the dyke some. Tides not very high now. Ground very wet and road very muddy.
Sat Dec 02: A fine spring like day. Will at Lee's baling hay. Self working on the dyke, cutting wood & fixing dike & sluice box. Gilbert plowing on Balls ranch.
Sun Dec 03: At home all day. Rainy day. Wrote a letter to George.
Mon Dec 04: Self working on the dyke in the A.M. & went down to Lees hay barn in the P.M. Showery some.
Tue Dec 05: Working on the dyke in the A.M. near hay barn. In the P.M. went over to Dick Peth's & paid for seed oats. Mr & Mrs Chilberg & Frank White's folks here in the eve or all night.
Wed Dec 06: Rainy day. Went to town. Paid Grace Sun bill & got M.O. for Pearl.
Thu Dec 07: Misty most of the day. Not doing much but chores. Will baling. Frank's folks here in the evening.
Fri Dec 08: Went to Mt. Vernon. Awful muddy roads. Misty.
Sat Dec 09: Rain all last night and all day to day. Ground full of water and running over. Heaviest rain for a year. Tides medium. Figure on a shed to bale hay under. Estimate it will cost 50 dollars for material. 44x44 shed roof covered with shakes.
Sun Dec 10: At home as usual. Fearful rain all last night. Everything a float. Tides medium.
Mon Dec 11: Went to town. Wills folks also. Cold S.E. wind. Rec a letter from Geo. Water everywhere.

Wed Dec 13: Self choring. Will started deer hunting. Blustery day. [margin: Tides medium.]
Thu Dec 14: Showery & raining in the A.M. Pleasant P.M. Self done chores. Made a wagon jack and in the P.M. went to Smiths with his barley and got a cord of ditch timber. Terrible bad roads.
Fri Dec 15: Doing chores and not much else. Rain in the P.M.
Sat Dec 16: Doing chores. Rain all last night. Hard much of the land like a lake this A.M. Sold a load of hay (6 bales) to Esary & five bales to Tholstrup at $8.00 per ton. Pleasant day.
Sun Dec 17: No rain but foggy. Started for church but found there was none and went to Mr Walters. Came home at 3.30 P.M.
Mon Dec 18: Damp and clowdy but no rain. Went to Fredonia in the A.M. & ditching in the P.M. Will came home from his hunt and went to ditching in the P.M.
Tue Dec 19: Went to LaConner in the A.M. & split ditch timber in the P.M. Will hauling ditch timber from McKowns. 6 cords bot of Perry McKown. [margin: Pleasant.]
Wed Dec 20: Strong south E. wind & some rain but not enough to prevent work. Will & self ditching in the "80". Heavy rain all last night. More rain this month than in any month for years.
Thu Dec 21: Rainy disagreeable day, but we kept ditching most all day. Quite a high tide in the P.M. Tholstrup got 500 lbs oats, but did not pay for them. Said he would pay next week. Everything full of water. Weather warm. Mud, mud, mud, water, water, water. This month takes the cake for rain. Yours truly.
Fri Dec 22: Moon full this eve at 9. The day set for a high tide. Tide not as high as yesterday. Quite pleasant. Will & self on the dyke 3/4 and ditching some. Clear & pleasant this evening.
Sat Dec 23: Ida & Grant went to town & staid all night. Christmas tree in LaConner to night. Will & self ditching & filling ditches all day. Fine day to work. Finished the first ditch in the 80 and put timber in about 15 rods of the second one. It is a fine drain, the best one yet in the ranch.
Sun Dec 24: Pearl came home from Seattle. Highest tide of the season, but not as high as the 86 tide by 8 inches or so. Went to church at LaConner & took dinner with Alf. Pleasant day.
Mon Dec 25: A very pleasant Christmas day. Lee B. & Alf & Susie came to dine with us also the Woodburns. The predicted high tide did not materialize yet.
Tue Dec 26: Will not working. Getting ready to bale hay at Callahans. Self took a load of hay to Gaches. A lovely day. Miss Klein came this eve. Pearl went after her.

Fri Dec 29: Rain some in the A.M. Will baling hay. Self prospecting ditch and went to Fredonia and made a bargain for 3000 ft of ditch lumber to be paid in hay at $8.00 per ton & Lumber at 7.00 per ton. Ed Stacey's folks here and staid all night.
Sat Dec 30: Misty & damp. Will baling. Self choring, sharpening tools and ditching 3 1/2 hours. Ed's folks, Fred, Mary & Miss Klein went home this A.M.

Mon Jan 01: Pleasant day. Will baling hay. Self choring & ditching. Tides low, light frost this A.M. & have about 90 rod finished tonight.

Wed Jan 03: 1 in snow this A.M. & mercury at 30. Good day for work. Will baling in the A.M. and ditching in the P.M. for me. Have 100 rod of ditch ready to plow in now.
Thu Jan 04: Mercury at 30. Clear & cold all day. Will & self ditching. Will hauled one cord timber from Tholstrups & took a bale of hay to Nelson. Self went to Fredonia to change lumber order. Freezing pretty hard tonight.
Fri Jan 05: Cold. Self ditching some & fixing rails for sandy ditch. Will hauling wood for himself. Alf got a load of hay on his note of 24. dollars. One year's time. Snow all the P.M. Ground froze 2 inches deep. [margin: Mercury at 20°]

Fri Jan 12: Ditching in the A.M. Will & Ida went to town in the P.M. Ida got a tooth pulled. Self not doing much in the P.M. Terrible windy last night & some rain. Zuwerk says my hay is only worth $7.00 per ton now. This don't make a man rich very fast.
