Tue Dec 23: Rainy day, Alf not working, sore side. Self sharpening up tools, &c.
Wed Dec 24: Not doing much but chores. Went to the Christmas tree at Bay View in the eve. Rainy.
Thu Dec 25: Christmas. Had a pretty high tide and strong west wind which nearly cut through our dyke. Alf went to the mill for lumber and self sharpened saw. Made maul and work on dyke from 8 P.M. on all night. [margin: Warm & pleasant.]
Fri Dec 26: Pansy took a walk. Quit work on the dyke and went to bed till after noon. Then worked on the dyke till night. Alf hauled another load of lumber and worked in the P.M. on dyke.
Sat Dec 27: Very warm but rainy in the P.M. Alf hauled a load of lumber & I went to town on D.M. Leamer's business.
Sun Dec 28: Rained a little last night. Went up to Will Woodburns and back at 4 P.M.
Mon Dec 29: Warm & pleasant good working weather. Alf & self covering cabbage.
Tue Dec 30: Covering cabbage. WArm & spring like.
Wed Dec 31: Alf covering cabbage. Self went to LaC. to make a tank for Tillinghast. Went in boat.

Thu Jan 01: Working on T.'s tank. Alf covering cabbage. Warm & windy with some rain.
Fri Jan 02: Same as yesterday. Very windy.
Sat Jan 03: Alf working for himself. Finished the tank and came home in the P.M. Warm with south wind.

Fri Jan 09: Temp at 24° this A.M. Clear and pleasant all day. Went up to go on to wood bin, but it was a fizzle. Setting fence posts and moving the Whitney line fence, down by the big barn. Ed Stacey here this eve.
Sat Jan 10: Stacey went to Anacortes. Pleasant. Alf & I making the fence by the back yard. Finished all but the wire.
Sun Jan 11: Went to S.S. & to the Methodist meeting. Mr L????? preached. Clear & pleasant. Tem 24°.
Mon Jan 12: Temp 24°. Making fence. Clear & pleasant some fog. Finished the Bradley line fence.
Tue Jan 13: Temp 29° Foggy. Went to La C to see about D.M.L's draft. Alf spading down dyke in the field north of the dyke.
Wed Jan 14: Working on the fence. Alf hauling fencing. Young here with the bill for dyking lumber.
Thu Jan 15: Working on the lane fence until 2 P.M. and quit for rain.
Fri Jan 16: Working on lane fence. Alf hauling rails & posts. Warm & windy.
Sat Jan 17: Warm & windy. Still working on fence. Rain some last night.
Sun Jan 18: Warm. Self went to B. View to S.S. and to Mr Paxton's sermon. Warmest day of the winter.
Mon Jan 19: Rain hard all last night. Alf went to LaC. Self not doing much but chores. Lame back. Got the colts up and fed them for the first.

Tue Jan 20: Pleasant & warm. Water line men here boring but did not strike any thing. Alf came home and set fence post in the P.M. Self nailing on rails some out by the hay barn.
Wed Jan 21: Working on fence. Stacey also. Foggy but warm, fine weather to work.
Thu Jan 22: Went to town to see about organizing Dyke Co. Went in boat, Lee B. also. Alf setting fence posts. Found it too late to organize this spring.
Fri Jan 23: Making fence and putting on wire. Finished all this side of the road. Alf spading down slough banks some. Went and got the boat in the A.M. Warm & springlike. Lynn Elliott's party last night.
Sat Jan 24: Lovely spring weather. Went to the timber and got a load of timber for a bridge by the road gate. Made the bridge and strengthen gate also. This has been the warmest Jan ever known in the country I think.
Sun Jan 25: Rainy day, did not go anywhere.
Mon Jan 26: Heavy rain this A.M. Not doing anything or Alf either. Went up to Fulks & Kalso's. Lots of water on the ground. Grass looking fine.
Tue Jan 27: Rain a good part of the day. Alf went to Bay View. Read Henderson's Memoir. Cut some wood and done the chores. The Preacher here to see about getting oats.
Wed Jan 28: No rain today. Put 15 sks oats in the feed bin. Hauled 2 jags of hay from the hay barn. Sold a ton of oats to the preacher at $32, to be paid by Butters Bros. with in 20 days. No doing much in the P.M. Dyked a little and stuck a fork through my foot.
Thu Jan 29: Rainy good part of the day. Alf helping Lee on the dyke bridge in the A.M. & went to B.V. in the P.M. Self sitting by the fire with lame foot.
Fri Jan 30:[margin: Fri. Alf hauling out stock bottom in the "80". Self in the house.]
Sat Jan 31: Warm & wet. Alf hauling straw in the A.M. Ed came and took Bell home.

Sun Feb 01: Got cold very fast last night. Mercury at 22 this A.M. The folks went to Church in wagon this A.M. Grant, Nettie & S. at home.
Mon Feb 02: Mercury at 25°. Alf sick not doing anything but the chores. Self reading. Pleasant weather.
Tue Feb 03: Temp 28°. Self getting alright again. Cut wood some and shot some ducks. Alf went to LaC.
Wed Feb 04: Alf hauling out posts for the Conner line fence. Rainy some. Self not doing much but chores.
Thu Feb 05: Alf hauling out straw in the big field. Self went to B.V. & got the digger fixed. Rainy in the P.M. Spectacle man here all night.

Sun Feb 08: Went to B.V. & heard Mr Warrum. Also to S.S. Ida & the girls at home. Nettie came from Wood.'s.
Mon Feb 09: Finished hauling the posts and began making the Conner fence. Rainy in the P.M.
Tue Feb 10: Pleasant. Self went to town to get nails & wire for fence. Alf setting posts. 4 days on fence to date and one day for team.
Wed Feb 11: Stormy morning & Eve. Worked on fence in the P.M. 4 days on Conner fence and one day team. Went to Kalsos in the AM to qualify for school clerk.
Thu Feb 12: Working on the Conner fence all day. Disagreeable weather. Finished setting posts.
Fri Feb 13: Went to B.V. and took the boar to Telegraph slough. Alf hauled a load of posts and carrots. Worked on fence some and quit for rain. Lizzie Jenne here.
Sat Feb 14: Stacey not working. Went to Anacortes. Self working on line fence 1/2 and cutting wood some. Pleasant day.

Mon Feb 23: Temp 24°. Snow 2 or 3 inches deep and still snowing some. This is ?erm???? winter good for any country.
Tue Feb 24: Frost. Went to town with Lee and got fanning mill & scale. Alf still away. Pleasant.
Wed Feb 25: A. Pidler staid here last night. Set up the scales and tried the mill. Jacobsen here for oats. Sold 3 tons to Lee Bradley at 30.
Thu Feb 26: Still cold. Not doing much but chores. Was up to Fulk's just night. He is baling hay.
Fri Feb 27: Temp 20°. Was up to Pavits in the A.M. paid him for 11 cords wood, 8 of engine wood. Cutting wood & choring in the P.M.
Sat Feb 28: Temp 20°. Working on Conner fence in the A.M. Not doing much in the P.M. No Alf yet. Clowdy looks like another storm of same kind. Tried to burn the weed patch but it act as though it as a bad job. This has been a cold month and disagreeable for outdoor work. Grass has suffered this last week more than all the balance of the winter. Ground very wet. No show for plowing until March 10 at least.

Thu Mar 05: Came home. Staid at Tillinghasts last night making fence to day. Finished the Conner fence.
Fri Mar 06: Frost. Mrs Elliott here. Went to Bay View. Alf hauling rails. In the P.M. both making fence. Got oat meal. 1.00.
Sat Mar 07: Pleasant & spring like. made fence by the hay barn lot. Finished. Self sowed grass seed & clover in the A.M. Mrs Elliott went home. Fanned grain some, screenings.
Sun Mar 08: Stormy day. Alf went to LaC. Rest staid at home.
Mon Mar 09: Frost. Pleasant. High wind last night. Alf & I grading sloughs and plowing down dyke. Land drying up fast. Will soon go to plow.
Tue Mar 10: Hauling straw in the A.M. Frost 28. Went to B.V. in the P.M. Alf got the scaper and began on the field by the barn leveling.
Wed Mar 11: Temp 28. Took some oats to Glover or Alf did and brought home a load of wood from Johnson's. Self in B.V. on a road view.
Thu Mar 12: Temp 30. Hitched up Maud colt to the wagon. In the P.M. began plowing sod in the pasture lot.Jensens here in the P.M. Drying weather.

Wed Mar 18: Went to LaConner and took the Moores up. Got a harness and other things. Roads very bad. Alf went to Burlington.
Thu Mar 19: Rain last night. Alf went to Burlington again for mix(?). Self uncovering cabbage and plowing in the P.M. Lee began boring a well to day.
Fri Mar 20: Rain hard last night and to day. Ground full of water. Alf & self fanning oats. Over 100 sks.
Sat Mar 21: Fanning oats in the A.M. finished and weighed out some for Lee. Alf went to B.V. in the PM with oats and eggs and hauled a load of wood for the School House. Cleaned 145 sks grain. Very wet.
Sun Mar 22: Went to S.S. at B.V. and down to Walters to sing in the eve. Pleasant drying day.
Mon Mar 23: Alf plowing. Self finished the cabbage and worked on the school house. Pleasant drying day.

Sun May 03: Went to Bay View to S.S. & church. Pleasant. Will & wife here in the P.M.
Mon May 04: Sowing oats in the A.M. & harrowing. Fulk helping. Rain in the P.M. Walter hoing cabbage in the A.M. and helping to fan oats in the P.M. 114 sks.
Tue May 05: Rain again this A.M. Cleaning oats. Finished. Went to Fulks in the P.M. for a load of hay. Alf went to Bay View with eggs. Ball sowing oats this P.M.
Wed May 06: Rain most of the day, but not very hard. Wind in the north. This is the longest clowdy spell on record. It is a terror to farmers. Cleaning up scrimmage. Put 25 sks in the feed bin.
Thu May 07: Sowed some timothy seed. Finished cleaning screenings. Hoed strawberries some. Alf sick in the P.M. Pleasant P.M.
Fri May 08: Pleasant day. Seeding. Fulk helping. Finished sowing oats for the year. Pretty wet in the A.M. for harrowing.

Sun May 17: Staid at home all day. Sam Gray here in the P.M. also Al Risbell & his sisters.
Mon May 18: Working at Fulks with two teams. Clowdy day. Land pretty wet. My grain looking well, but it has lots of weeds in it. Wrote to Geo & sent him some papers. Heard the Skagit was getting up. Grandma came home.
Tue May 19: Working at Fulk's with two teams. Fine day for killing weeds. Tina Woodburn here this eve. He has 78 acres sowed now and 27 left.

Tue May 26: Finished hoing the cabbage and began plowing the new patch. Very warm. The Skagit is high. The grain & hay needs rain. Saw a deer today.
Wed May 27: The Utsalady here for the oats. Clowdy but no rain to speak of. Loaded the oats, worked on the cabbage ground and sowed barley on the potato ground.
Thu May 28: Clowdy & showery but no much rain. Alf worked on the cabbage ground 1/2 and hauled wood some. 2 loads. Self choring about the granary and barn. Fulk came down & settled up.
Fri May 29: Fine growing day. Alf hauled 5 loads of wood. Self choring, mowing weeds and up to Grays and Fulks after a wagon. Alf bot a horse.
Sat May 30: Went to LaConner to get a load of folks. Alf also with Fulk's wagon. Had a big crowd and fine day for the circus. Over 50 people here during the day.
Sun May 31: Earl Whitney died this A.M. at 2 o'clock. Went to B.V. to church. Rev Warmine preached. Peter Mill & Hall here on bicycles. Frank White & wife here, also Mary and family. Warm & dry.

Mon Jun 01: Went to the funeral. Alf went to John Wallaces. Grain looking middling well but needs rain.
Tue Jun 02: Not doing much but chores. Alf went to Stanwood. Frank & Jeff were up to Youngs mill.
Wed Jun 03: Not doing much in the A.M. In the P.M. took Frank & Blanch up to the Depot, then cut tarweeds out of the grain. Alf came home. Grain looking well as though it might average 30 sks to the acre.
Thu Jun 04: Started for Whatcom via Anacortes. Rain some to day. Arrived in Whatcom at 5 P.M. and went to the evening session of the association.

Sun Jun 07: Went to B.V. to S.S. & church. Fine growing weather. Oats looking well but weedy.
Mon Jun 08: Working in the cabbage patch. Alf also. Pleasant. Cool nights.
Tue Jun 09: Hoing cabbage plants & washing the spring wagon. Painting it also. Alf & Ida went to Ray's party. Mrs & Mr Nevtar had Star & the cart. Jean had company. Steamer stuck in the slough. Rapid Transit.
Wed Jun 10: Alf washing wagon and cutting down apple trees. Self finished painting wagon. Alf went to B.V. with wagon to be fixed and got some gravel for chickens. Self hoing in the garden.
Thu Jun 11: Hauling timber from the woods for hay & bridge covering. Warm growing weather. Balls oats going out to night.

Sat Aug 01:Heard that R.E. Whitney died last night. Started for Anacortes at 1 PM. Finished hauling hay and hauling in the stacking outfit. Alf cultivating cabbage and Bebber working in the big patch pulling weeds.
Sun Aug 02: Went to the funeral. There was a large turn out and universal sorrow manifested by every one. Came home on the 4 P.M.
Mon Aug 03: Bebber & Alf hoing cabbage. Self fewed(?) the stack & hung gates.
Tue Aug 04: Rainy last night & this A.M. The boys mending sacks in the A.M. and went to LaConner in the P.M. Father arrived this PM from PA and took us by surprise.

Rain quite hard in the eve. John McKown, Mr Griffith pitchers, Tom Whicker & Christopherson, Bob Fortin screenings. Stevens & Hubert B. cutters.
Thu Sep 17: Rain all last night and some to day. Strong south wind. About 1/2 crew here to day. Mary Wallace here. Alf took her to LaConner. Doing nothing today.
Fri Sep 18: Rain hard all night & this A.M. Shocks badly down and caps off. Doing nothing. Went to B.V. with some oats for Glover. Poor prospect for clearing off this eve.

Sun Sep 27: Father & Ida came home last eve. Went to B.V. to church. Mr Goodell preached. Pleasant day. Ball threshing also Wilson.
Mon Sep 28: Father went to LaConner to tend meetings. Went to the Island to thresh but it rain at 9.30 and the balance of the day. Alf, John Jacobsen & Frank White hauling sacks.
Tue Sep 29: Rainy day. Grain soaking wet. No prospect of threshing. Blossom had a calf last night. Frank White went home. Alf to LaConner.
Wed Sep 30: Went to town, Tillinghast came down & Alf helped him clean the seed. No rain to day.

Thu Oct 01: Shipped 250 sks oats to Ed Stacey. They weighed 24011 average 96. Sold 1200 more to Jim Gaches at $22. per ton. Alf finished hauling grain & took the seed to the Depot. Self threshing at Whitney's Island in the P.M. Grain in fair order considering the rain.
Fri Oct 02: Jacobson & team yesterday & today. Threshing on the Island. Clowdy and some rain at 5 P.M. Alf & Ed Mowon hauling straw and putting away machinery. This beats all weather for threshing.
Sat Oct 03: Alf hauling off stack litter & began plowing across the road. Threshing in the P.M. Very wet, it is doubtful about its keeping. Was over to the draw bridge in the P.M. Filled the engine up with new water. Had a hot box in the P.M.

Thu Nov 19: Pulling & hauling beets in the A.M. and working on the dyke in the P.M. Putting on rails & braces. Warm & rainy.
Fri Nov 20: Rainy in the P.M. Another high tide and north west blow which did some damage to the dyke but did not break it. Will went hunting. Self working on dyke.
Sat Nov 21: Rain some last night. Working on dyke. Aunt Lou at Bradleys. Hay balers also. Will away hunting.
Sun Nov 22: Staid at home except going for the mail. Was down to Bradleys in the eve. Talking with Aunt Lou, Father also.

Mon Nov 23: Weather warm. Will came home. Sharpened up tools to make tank for Roy. Not doing much else. Will made a chicken box for himself. Tides medium.
Tue Nov 24: Went to the dyke and helped Otto make a new gate for the box, then quit for rain. Will hauled a load of brush & one of wood for himself. Rain all day. then hauled the grain in the P.M. 795 sks grain granary.
Wed Nov 25: Rain all last night and to day. Ground water than it has been since the overflow. Will & self dyking some and scowing mud some into the slough boxes or aprons. Father & Ida went to town to go to the house warming of the parsonage.
Thu Nov 26: Thanksgiving Day. Rainy & stormy day. Self at home all day. Took dinner with Wills folks. The folks in town. Scowed dirt a short time in the A.M.
Fri Nov 27: Went after Grandma. The folks came home. Will & self scowing dirt down by the dam. Pleasant day but very muddy and lots of water over the land.
Sat Nov 28: Very fine day. Will hauling wood and chickens in the A.M. Both scowing mud in the P.M. at the dam. Father getting ready for Pa. Valuation of taxable propery. $17715.
Sun Nov 29: Father started to go East & self with him. Went to Anacortes and staid all night.
Mon Nov 30: We went to Tacoma to day by steamer "Seattle". Rainy & unpleasant. Put up at the Fife.

Tue Dec 01: Father started for the East to day at 9 oclock. Raining. Self staid in Tacoma till 3 P.M. then went to Seattle and staid at the "Snoqualmie"
Wed Dec 02: Came home by the R.R. arrived at 3 P.M. Still stormy. Will has been washing harnesses some. Too wet to work at the cabbage.
Thu Dec 03: Sawing wood and digging beets for Kalso in the A.M. On the dyke in the P.M. Pleasant day but cool with East wind. Tides not very high for this time of year. Aunt Lou here with her grandson.

Fri Dec 04: Quite a frost this A.M. 26°. Took Aunt Lou to B.V. Mrs Price died to day. Will tried to plow cabbage but it was too soft. Hooking up Tule shoes for Charley in the P.M.
Sat Dec 05: There are 537 good sks in the big part of G. and 148 in the other part and 99 Whitney oats. Total 784 at this date. Temp at 30° this A.M. and 1/2 inch of snow. Shod Charley with with Tule shoes and plowed cabbage ground. Very wet & soft. Heard from Father. This is the anniversary of the overflow.
Sun Dec 06: Mercury at 26°. Went to B.V. to church on foot. Cool. Heavy shouth wind in the eve. Was over to Tina's to dinner.
Mon Dec 07: Hard wind all day, from S.E. Heaviest of the season. Conner & Sullivan flooded.
Tue Dec 08: Will plowed cabbage some in the A.M. Will went to Anacortes. Highest tide of the season so far but 5 or 6 inches short of the big tide. Dan McGreggor got 1710 lbs of hay. Terrible rain yesterday P.M. & last night. Ground full of water.
Wed Dec 09: Rain done. Will hauling in carrots &c. Self went to town to make Roy's tank. LaConner flooded.
Thu Dec 10: In town makeing tank. Pleasant day.
Fri Dec 11: Tank making. Pleasant day. Tillinghast settled up for the cabbage seed.
Sat Dec 12: Rainy day, very disagreeable. Finished the tank and came home in the rain. Very hard rain at night from the N.E.
Sun Dec 13: At home all day. Pleasant, but very wet under foot.
Mon Dec 14: Pulling carrots in the A.M. and working at the cabbage a little in the P.M. Rainy part of the day. Brot the horses from across the road.
Tue Dec 15: Aunt Lou here again. Went to town. Will also & Ida. Had a good trip. Rain all last night. Rain more in the night.
Wed Dec 16: Hauled in the carrots and covered the cabbage. Rain in the eve. A time of much wet. Grandma came home. Went to the station for her.

Thu Dec 17: Covering cabbage. Land very wet. I haven't much faith in it. Aunt Lou went to Anacortes. Pleasant day & warm.
Fri Dec 18: Stormy day. Could not do anything out of doors. Mending up and oiling harnesses. This had been the wettest season on record.
Sat Dec 19: Not much rain to day. Covering cabbage. Ground terrible wet. Quite a high tide to day. Have 20 rows of cabbage to cover yet which will take 4 days at least for now.
Sun Dec 20: Ed Stacey here to dinner. Rainy day & windy. Went to the office & got Fathers first letter from home where he arrived safe & sound.
Mon Dec 21: Covering cabbage. Frosty A.M. & rain in the P.M., but we kept at work.
Tue Dec 22: Rain all last night & to day with high wind. Fearful weather. Went to Kalso's & to hay bin. Will oiling & washing harness.
Wed Dec 23: Will covering cabbage & Charley helping him. Self went to town with Lee. Clear & cool signs of winter.
Thu Dec 24: Mercury at 27°. this A.M. Covering cabbage, had 6 extra men besides Charley in the P.M. Got nearly done.
Fri Dec 25: Christmas. Miss Risbell & Al, Lee & Wills folks here to dinner. Cold south wind. Froze quite hard last night, but is thawing today.
Sat Dec 26: Warmer & pleasant today in the A.M. but changed & was windy & rainy in the P.M. Alf, Pearl & Miss Peck came down to day. Finished the cabbage & hauled in the bal of the beets.
Sun Dec 27: At home all day. Rainy some and unpleasant.
Mon Dec 28: Went to Mt Vernon to pay taxes and staid all night. Rain some in the P.M. Will hauling wood & choring. Taxes high and farmers kicking. All sorts.

Tue Dec 29: Will dito yesterday. Self in Mt. Vernon all day. Rain very hard all last night & blowing to beat anything. Got home at 5 P.M. High tide today.
Wed Dec 30: Went to town in boat. Will cutting wood out of old posts. Pleasant day got a sack of flour & case of beef.
Thu Dec 31: Cold disagreeable day with east wind. Will cutting wood most of the day. Self not doing much but tinkering about. Sold Sodenburg 1135 lbs hay.
Fri Jan 01: Windy as usual and rainy at night. Ida, Grant & self went to Anacortes staid all night at Ed's.
Sat Jan 02: Col Haines died. Went up to Franks Whites to day, and staid all night at the big house. Pleasant day.
Sun Jan 03: Frost this A.M. At Franks till dinner time, then came to Anacortes & took train for house. A lovely pleasant day.
Mon Jan 04: Will choring and cutting wood and making posts. Self went to Wilsons & Callahans to get a wheelbarrow. Also made a maul.
Tue Jan 05: Light Frost. Went to the saw mill & got lumber for roller, and got some planks for a sluice box out across the road. Pleasant day.
Wed Jan 06: Frost 28° Put in a box out across the road. Will went to mill for some plank & boards for his henhouse. Self cutting up lumber for roller & choring about. Clear & pleasant.
Thu Jan 07: Will went to the woods to cut trees for wood. Self working at roller & doing chores. Rec'd Letter from George. Clowdy & warmer in evening.
Fri Jan 08: Clowdy & misty all day. Dan McGregor took his hay to day. Will went to the timber but came back for rain. Self choring & working on the roller.
Sat Jan 09: Will working in the woods. Self helping him in the A.M. & working at the roller in the P.M. Clear & pleasant.
