Thu Jan 01: Began the year by sawing wood all day. The marsh is nearly all covered with rain water. Smith's Ranch is one foot under water.

Sun Jan 04: Went down & got Aunt Lou to cut my hair. Snowy most of the day, but melts as it comes.

Tue Jan 06: Went up and cut wood. Snow on the ground.
Wed Jan 07: Terrible snow storm all last night. Allen & Minnie was out in it. Snow 18 ins. to (slough) 2 ft dyke. Went and got Allens boat to Telegraph. [margin: 6th & 7th big snow storm.]
Thu Jan 08: Had a very high tide and stormy north wind with snow. Made an oar.
Fri Jan 09: Staid around home and cut wood, cold.

Sun Jan 11: Got up at 7.30 and got ready for Utsalady. Then I went with my grain on the Fanny Lake.
Mon Jan 12: Spent the day at Utsalady looking at the mill & loading. Borrowed $150.88 of the Puget Mill Co. and gave my oats as security.
Tue Jan 13: Came home from Utsalady on the Libby. Had a very heavy wind & high tide this morning. The dyke broke up in my field.
Wed Jan 14: Worked on the dyke till 2 oclock this morning & then it went out. Helped Callahan on the dyke in the P.M.
Thu Jan 15: Rain all the A.M. Worked on the dyke in the P.M. & until 11 P.M. stopping the break.
Fri Jan 16: Did nothing to day. Rainy weather and the sloughs all full of fresh water.
Sat Jan 17: Worked on the big dam in the P.M. trying to stop the hole where the box is covered. Raining in the A.M.
Sun Jan 18: Quiet Sunday. Went down to the dam in the morning to get Whitneys scow. Was down to Whitneys in the eve. Got a book & read "The Man Without a Country". North wind but very mild.
Mon Jan 19: Rainy day. Did not do much. Went up to Clarks in the P.M. & got an oar stick.
Tue Jan 20: Worked on the dyke all day. Pleasant. Put lumber on the dams.
Wed Jan 21: Worked getting a scow load of brush and some on the dyke after dinner.
Thu Jan 22: Went down & got the brush and unloaded the scow. Began my shed over the scow. Rainy. Filed a saw for Klingenmaier. & made an oar.
Fri Jan 23: Rainy day. Killed a hog and cut it up and that is about all. Wilson helped me.

Sat Feb 07: In the A.M. made a sluice box and in the P.M. helped Whitney scow Keanies plank home.

Fri Feb 13: Did not do much. Ground very wet.

Sun Feb 15: John Cornelius died this morning at 9 oclock. 2 inches of snow again this morning. Went up to the school house & heard Mr Burnell preach.
Mon Feb 16: Went to LaConner and staid all day. File a saw for Allen first.
Tue Feb 17: Went to John Cornelius' funeral and to Sharpenburgs sale in the P.M. and staid all night in LaConner.
Wed Feb 18: Bought a plow and set of harrow teeth this morning & came home in a heavy snow storm.

Fri Feb 20: Made a watering trough for horses & went up to Allen's & up in the wood where Dick Ball was at work.

Fri Mar 12: Clear & cold. Burned grass some & fence also. Made a sled in the P.M. It will soon be dry enough to plow.
Sat Mar 13: Went to LaConner bought rolling coulter, suit clothes &c. Fine weather.

Sun Mar 28: Easter. Had 9 eggs for breakfast on the overnight of Easter. Very unpleasant Sunday. Spent the day principally reading "Little Women".
Mon Mar 29: Helped Ida wash & made a hog pen out by the barn no rain.
Tue Mar 30: Went up to Clarks & got my hogs in the A.M. was down at Whitneys playing C.J. with Harry and Dutch(?) in the P.M. Mr. & Mrs. Darcy, took supper with us. No rain.
Wed Mar 31: Very pleasant day with north wind. Went to the White house & got some roots and grafted the grafts George sent me. Fixed my plow in the P.M. Party at Padilla in the evening.

Thu Apr 01: Sold Dick Ball $10.00 worth of grain to finish paying for the cow. Spaded some in the garden. Cold windy weather, but drying.
Fri Apr 02: Cold drying wind. Worked on the road to day. Finished my tax for 1879. Worked on the big bridge down by Trimbles warehouse.
Sat Apr 03: Cold & windy. Spent the day sowing & harrowing in wheat. Sowed the first grain in the neighborhood. A light snow storm last night.

Sun Jul 18: Staid at home all day. Thunder Storm last night. Struck trees up by Allens. Very clowdy disagreeable day.
Mon Jul 19: Worked on the wagon today. Clowdy not good hay weather.
Tue Jul 20: Worked on wagon some & picked berries some. Mrs. Ball & Darcy over here and got strawberries. Otto cutting hay.
Wed Jul 21: Hoed in the garden some. I made a waste box to work the machine in. Ida went to the Ridge after currants.
Thu Jul 22: Picked the raspberries & worked on wagon some. Callahan bought some meat from Mrs. Smith 10.00. Otto cocking up hay, fine weather. Finished hoeing potatos.
Fri Jul 23: Threshing with the machine in the mornings & cutting with sythe. Finished the wagon & got it out doors. Mrs. Wilson & Henry here to dinner.
Sat Jul 24: Loaded the scow with hay today for Mr Morgan. Whitney helped.
Sun Jul 25: Warm & pleasant. We went to Ship Harbor went to Morgans also, got back at 6 P.M.
Mon Jul 26: Went to the Ridge for currants in the A.M. and hauled hay in the barn in P.M. Started for Guemes Island with the Hay at 7:30 in evening.
Tue Jul 27: Found our selves at Hat Island, this morning to Morgan's wharf at noon. Unloaded the hay in the P.M.
Wed Jul 28: Took dinner with Jenkins today. Started for home at 3 P.M. arrived at 10 P.M.
Thu Jul 29: Rainy in A.M. Hauled hay in the PM. Did not do much in the fore noon.
Fri Jul 30: Rainy in the A.M. Picked berries & worked in garden some in the P.M. Whitneys folks started for Stanwood and we went down to Beek(?) house for them.
Sat Jul 31: Mowed some. Put up hay some & worked in the strawberries. Got letter from George.

Sun Aug 01: Pleasant day. Staid at Whitney's all day. Jones & Soderburg there to dinner. Otto came & got some oats to pay for my seed barley & brought the machine back.
Mon Aug 02: Mowing with sythe most all day. went up to Mrs. Smiths in the P.M. to drive out her hay(?).
Tue Aug 03: Digging out the scow ditch in the AM, and helped Leary haul hay in the P.M. also put up my hay. Wilson went to La Conner.
Wed Aug 04: Helped Leary haul hay also cut & hauled a load of poles to make a wagon shed.
Thu Aug 05: Went to Kalsos & got a frow, also built a wagon shed. fine growing weather.
Fri Aug 06: Went and hauled out the balance of my wood in A.M. & went over to Dick Ball's for a book in the P.M.
Sat Aug 07: Got up at 4 A.M. & started for La Conner to tend court. Darcy case not tried. Came home at night.
Sun Aug 08: Staid at home all day. Pleasant.
Mon Aug 09: Got up at 5 and started for LaConner. Staid all day attending court. and staid all night at Mr. Whitworth's.
Tue Aug 10: Tended court all day & came home in the evening.

Wed Aug 11: Went to La Conner this morning to testify on the D'Arcy case but it did not come off. Went to murder trial of Territory vs Clark.
Thu Aug 12: Staid in LaConner last night & went to D'Arcys. Quit to day and home in the Evening. Whitney's came home also.
Fri Aug 13: Did not do much but chore around in the fore noon. Whitney helped us finish hauling hay in the P.M. Grain short.
Sat Aug 14: Went to LaConner to attend the Republican Primary meetings. Was elected Delegate. Large & enthusiastic attendance.
Sun Aug 15: Staid at home all day. Mr Taylor the preacher was here. Fine weather to ripen grain.
Mon Aug 16: Helped Whitney fix up his machine.
Tue Aug 17: Whitney began cutting my barley with the self binder. Sent for a watch to the Farmers Friend. Shocking barley in the P.M.
Wed Aug 18: Rienzi finished cutting barley & I finished shocking it. fine weather.
Thu Aug 19: Working on the dyke with Whitney & Otto down by the big dam.
Fri Aug 20: Working on dyke making a sluice box all day. Fine harvest weather.
Sat Aug 21: Painted the boat in the A.M. Worked in the garden some in the P.M. & mowed some oats around the 8 acre field.
Sun Aug 22: Went over Whitney's grain fields and got Garvis to cut my hair. Clowdy day.
Mon Aug 23: Set up Allen's cradle and cut around a piece of oats then painted on the boat some.
Tue Aug 24: Made a bridge across the slough by the dam. Did not do much in the P.M.
Wed Aug 25: In the morning went out to look at the grain then came in and got ready to go to LaConner. Went with Whitney to LaConner in the P.M.
Thu Aug 26: Spent the day in LaConner tending the Rep. Con. Declared my intention to run for Auditor in the P.M. and secured the nomination. Clowdy.
Fri Aug 27: Poor harvest weather. Came home at noon. Shocked grain in the P.M. cut by self binder.
Sat Aug 28: Began cutting grain in the A.M. but had to quit for rain. Rained all the balance of the day. Did not do much in the P.M but split wood.
Sun Aug 29: Clowdy in the A.M. and poor harvest weather.
Mon Aug 30: Shocked oats all day for myself on the east end of the ranch.
Tue Aug 31: Shocking oats for Whitney.
September 1880
Wed Sep 01: Helped Whitney fix up his reaper in the A.M. and fix my boat in the P.M.
Thu Sep 02: Did not do much in the A.M. got Allen's cradle and cut oats in the P.M.
Fri Sep 03: Went to Marches and Guemes Island. Sold some oats and got some fruit; got stuck on the mud flats and laid out till 2 A.M. Pleasant experience.
Sat Sep 04: Got up at 5 and fixed a chain for Whitney then went to bed until noon. In the P.M. bound & shocked oats. Fine harvest weather. Oats sowed June 5th are beginning to turn some.

Tue Sep 07: Started for LaConner and took the scow up to the spring. Traded off my old watch and rec'd my new one by mail. Came home in the evening and got the scow as far as Jenni's.
Wed Sep 08: Worked for Whitney 3/4 day shocking & fixing up the engine. Went after the scow in the evening.
Thu Sep 09: Went to Allen's and got his cradle and cut around some oat fields.
Fri Sep 10: Helped Whitney kill a beef in the A.M. Cleaned out my tank and hauled a load of water in the P.M.
Sat Sep 11: Hauled a load of water in the A.M. and worked for Whitney in the P.M. fixing up Reaper &c.
Sun Sep 12: Staid at home in the A.M. & went to hear Mr Purcell preach in the Hall in the P.M. at 2:30 o'clock.
Mon Sep 13: Worked in my own field shocking all day, the Binder cut 8 acres today. Have used 7 1/2 spools of wire to bind 20 acres.
Tue Sep 14: Worked for Whitney running Engine in the P.M. Helped set the machine in the A.M. & Wilson helped me shock to balance.
Wed Sep 15: Running Engine 1/4 day. Finished the timothy seed. Worked for W. moving machine to Jenni's in the P.M. While Jones went to Whites to get hoop iron for me.
Thu Sep 16: Put iron on the front wheels to my wagon in the A.M. Running engine in the P.M. at Jenni's.
Fri Sep 17: Rainy last night & this morning. Threshing at Jenni's, moving to Dick Ball's at 4 P.M.
Sat Sep 18: Finished Ball's & moved to Darcy's just night, then came home. Pleasant day.
Sun Sep 19: Staid at home most of the day. Went over to Darcy's just night and staid all night.
Mon Sep 20: Whitney owes me 8 days work to date. Threshing at Darcy's 3/4 day and moved home just night. Rain at night. Ida went to LaConner today with Allen but did not get home.
Tue Sep 21: In the A.M. cleaned out the Engine & put the iron on my other wagon wheels. In the P.M. worked for Whitney setting engine & making cow stable &c. Clowdy & misty.
Wed Sep 22: Went out to cut grain with sythe, but had to quit for rain. Heavy rain to day. No prospect of threshing.
Thu Sep 23: Cutting around grain fields. Jones working for me. Mr. Echelburg staid here all night.
Fri Sep 24: Went up and worked for Callahan putting on shakes.
Sat Sep 25: Threshing for Whitney. 1500 bushels grain pretty wet.

Fri Oct 08: Heavy rain all last night and high wind. Walked from Ball's Camp home got home at 4 P.M. Pleasant in the P.M.

Sun Oct 10: Worked for Whitney 3/4 day binding & shocking grain. Ed working also.
Mon Oct 11: Working for Whitney all day sowing timothy seed. Very pleasant drying weather. but frosty morning. Ed working also.
Tue Oct 12: Sowing timothy seed in the A.M. for Whitney. Working for my self in the P.M. The steamer Susie in this evening. Shipped 250 sacks to S.F. & 90 sks barley to Cosper, LaConner. Ed working 3/4 day. Clowdy, clowdy but no rain.
Wed Oct 13: Had a lame wrist. Working for W. in the A.M. with one hand shocking. Rainy some in the P.M. did not do anything in the P.M. Ed worked 6 hours. Cleared off, pleasant just night.
Thu Oct 14: In the morning, went around to see about threshing and emptied sacks some in the granary. In the P.M. went to LaConner. Took Whitneys scow up to the spring. Staid all night at LaConner.
Fri Oct 15: Was at LaConner in the A.M. Came home in the P.M. Upson came down with me.
Sat Oct 16: Set the machine in the P.M. & threshed on my grain in the P.M. Fine weather. Grain not turning out very well.
Sun Oct 17: Finished threshing my grin and moved to Kalsow's. Fine threshing weather, but foggy in the A.M.
Mon Oct 18: Threshing at Kalsow's. Moved to Allens in the evening. Team & wagon worked at Kalsow 1 1/2 days. Fogy all day. Have run the engine 11 1/4 days to date.
Tue Oct 19: Threshing at Allen's all day. Foggy but no rain. Ed working with my team hauling in sacks.
Wed Oct 20: Threshing at Whitneys to day. Edi finished hauling sacks and worked for Whitney 1/2 day with team. Boarding at home.
Thu Oct 21: Threshing for Whitney. Finished this side & moved across the slough. Ed not working. Team & wagon working for Whitney. Boarding myself.
Fri Oct 22: Threshing across the slough. Very foggy in the A.M. Ed at LaConner. Team & wagon across slough working for Whitney. I am boarding at home.

Mon Oct 25: Fixed up the fence and let the hogs out in the field. Went up to Allens after the old cow but did not get her.
Tue Oct 26: In the A.M. pruned the trees. Mrs Klingenmaier was up here washing. Went down to cut oats for Whitney. Had to quit for rain. Rained very hard in the P.M. Poor prospect of saving any more grain. Whitney in LaConner. Ed Stacey also.
Wed Oct 27: This is my 31st birthday. Did not do much of anything. Whitney and Allen cutting grain this P.M. Pretty late harvesting. Allen's grain heating in the sack.
Thu Oct 28: Went up and got the black cow and Ed's heifer and put them in the field. In the P.M. went over to Jenni's & helped drive over his hog for Whitney. Rain in the P.M.
Fri Oct 29: Dug potatos in the P.M. and went to LaConner in the P.M. Pleasant but too wet to thresh.
Sat Oct 30: Transplanted some apple trees then went over and got up steam. Threshed in the P.M. Ed and the team working also. Boarding at home.

Wed Nov 24: Finished Nevills threshing & moved to McRae's. Cold frosty weather.
Thu Nov 25: Finished threshing for this year. Got home at 4 P.M. Went down to settle up with Whitney in the evening.
Fri Nov 26: Got up the team & hauled wood & rails. Cold & frosty.
Sat Nov 27: Bought some wood of Whitney and hauled 8 cords. Some bark also. Had his wagon one day.
Sun Nov 28: Staid at home in the A.M. & helped George Brown load the Schooner Perry in the P.M. Pleasant but cold & frosty.
Mon Nov 29: The steamer Susie was here. Helped load her. She was off at 2.30 P.M. 420 sacks for me. 325 for Kalsow & 450 for Whitney. Hauled a load of rails just night.
Tue Nov 30: Nettie born. 3 inches of snow this morning. Did not do much but the chores & then split wood some. Rainy part of the day. Harry went to LaConner for a Doctor. A baby came to our house at 11 oclock. The Doctor arrived at 12.30.

Wed Dec 01: Rainy most of the day. Ida feeling pretty well considering. Did not do much but chore around.
Thu Dec 02: Snow again last evening & cold this morning. Took my black sow across the slough and helped Harry cross some horses. The baby & mother doing well.
Fri Dec 03: Did not do much but chores. Clean & cold.
Sat Dec 04: Went to LaConner - With Upson. Bought some things and came home with my own boat. Snowing & cold at night. Bought a C. cut saw of J. & G. Gaches.
Sun Dec 05: Cold & snowy. Driving snow storm this morning. Ida & the baby doing well. High tides now days.
Mon Dec 06: Rain on at all day. Snow going off fast. Was down to Harriss with Upson & Petre Krause in the P.M.
Tue Dec 07: Rainy day. Put the wagon under the shed. Set up the fattening hogs and split wood some.

Fri Dec 10: In the A.M. went out and laid up the fence between lot 8 & the "Allen 80". Clowdy & warm. Ed started for town this morning with 5 doz ducks.
Sat Dec 11: Got ready to go to LaConner but it rained too hard and we gave it up. Very stormy in the A.M. Went duck hunting in the P.M. Shot 3.
Sun Dec 12: Very heavy wind last night and to day. Clear & warm. Ground very full of water.
Mon Dec 13: Ida & baby getting along pretty well. Stormy day most of the day. Went to LaConner with R. E. Whitney. Got drafts cashed $225 from Puget Mill Co. & $192 from Waller & Co. San Francisco. Paid Whitney & Gaches also taxes to L.L. Andrews.
Tue Dec 14: Did not do much of anything. Was over to Harris's house a little while, talking with him. The Skagit is up very high today. D'Arcys dyke broke this morning.
Wed Dec 15: The Schooner Perry at Whitney's loading oats. Helped Whitney some & went down to the dams in the evening.
Thu Dec 16: Went up the timber to get out stuff to fix the dyke. Whitney went to LaConner to get spikes. Heard Mrs Smith was very sick. Ida very poorly with sore breast, cold and generally under the weather.
Fri Dec 17: Working in the timber in the A.M. and on the dyke in the P.M. putting on timbers between the two dams.
Sat Dec 18: Did not work on the dyke to day. Mrs. Smith died Thursday 11 A.M. and was brought here to day on the Chehalis & buried on the Ridge up by the school house. Clear & cold.
Sun Dec 19: Staid at home all day. Nothing unusual happened.
Mon Dec 20: Went down & worked on the dyke 1/2 day. Got the old black cow over from the other side of the slough.
Tue Dec 21: Worked on the dyke in the P.M. 1/2 day. Filed a saw in the A.M. Fine winter weather. Not very cold, but frosty.
Wed Dec 22: Went over & got Harries stove & took our old stove up to Mr Stroble. Then went to Allens and got my white pig and brought it home.
Thu Dec 23: Ida's breast very sore. Went up to Smith's in the morning. Did not do much the balance of the day.
Fri Dec 24: Went to LaConner this morning. Did not stay in town long. Send a letter to the Oregon Loan & Trust for money and one to Mr E Stacey for the same papers(?).
Sat Dec 25: This is a dry Christmas. Snowing most of the day. Ida's breast very painful. Did not do much but the chores. Finished reading "Roxy". It is a good story.
Sun Dec 26: Ida up most all last night with her breast. It is a little better today. Raining most of the day.
Mon Dec 27: Went up to the timber to get some vine maple. Made a cart for Pearl & ax handles. Rainy most of the day.
Tue Dec 28: Did not do much but chores. Stormy day.
Wed Dec 29: Whitney went to town with beef. Snow 6 inches deep this morning. but very warm. Not doing much.
Thu Dec 30: Ed Stacey here to dinner he borrowed my boat. Rain all day. Warm.

Fri Jan 14: Doing chores & working on the wood shed. Went up to Geo. granary & got some lumber. Traded a hog to him for 400 sq ft lumber. Very pleasant day. Freezing a little at night.
Sat Jan 15: Clean & cold this morning. Mercury at 24°. Worked on smoke house & done chores.
