Wed Jan 01: Got up at 8 A.M. rather late to begin this New Year. Did not do much except take a horse back ride. Went to the Ridge & called on McK???? folks.
Thu Jan 02: Cold as usual. Made picture frames most all day, Ed and I went up to the woods in the morning and got a load of bark. Mr. Gilkie was here in the eve and staid all night.
Fri Jan 03: Filed a saw for Whitney in the morning and worked on my secretacy the balance of the day. Whitney got home LaConner this eve. [margin: Cold.]
Sat Jan 04: Worked on secretary most of the day. Clean & cold. Went to Literary in the evening. Had a good turn out.

Sat Feb 01: Cut wood up on Smiths ranch in the A.M. and covered ditch in the afternoon. Fine weather.
Sun Feb 02: Went down to Whitneys in the morning. Staid in the house the balance of the day.
Mon Feb 03: Went up to the wood and sharpened posts. Ed began hauling rails for cow pasture.
Tue Feb 04: Ed hauling rails. I was sharpening posts and cutting roads in the woods. [margin: Nice weather.]

Fri Feb 07: 2 inches of snow on the ground this morning. Ed finished hauling rails, hauled them out to the slough. The maple wood also. Got done at noon. Worked on my secretary in the P.M. putting on doors & knobs. There was a man due selling wheat at 25¢ per lb. Got 8 lbs.
Sat Feb 08: Very stormy day staid in the house all day. Ed went to LaConner. Cemented my aquarium.
Sun Feb 09: Spent the day reading &c. Wrote a letter to the Rural Publishing Co. for seeds. Stormy day.
Mon Feb 10: Cut wood and done chores about the house. Tried my aquarium. It was a failure. Snow in A.M.
Tue Feb 11: Snow this morning. Very cold & windy. With N. East snow storm. Conn(?) here in the evening. Shot 2 ducks on the grain.
Wed Feb 12: Cold & stormy snow. Clark's folks were here to dinner. They were moving to day. Sended their stuff in my granary.
Thu Feb 13: Filed a saw for Ck Soderburg in the A.M. in the P.M. Did not do anything most of the time. Fixed the sluice box in the 45 ft slough. Went down to Mrs Upsons to supper and staid all night at Whitneys.
Fri Feb 14: Snow gone this morning. Went up to Balls in the P.M. & got my pig. Got 9 eggs today. Helped Clark tow his things up the slough.

Thu Feb 20: Very heavy wind last night and this evening. Blew my shed into the slough and the privy over also. Work on the cow yard fence, finished it. Harry & Jule staid here tonight. Wall flowers in bloom.
Fri Feb 21: Fixed up the fence where the shed was and then went and drove up the cow and calf. Made gate for the cow pen. and filed the rip saw. Cut wood some. Rainy P.M.

Wed Mar 19: Rainy. R.E. Whitney and Kate Bradley married this morning. Grand party this eve at Padilla Hall. Clark Schultz, Libby & Gisham bros. played. 140 people present. The LaConner folks came on the Fanny Lake.
Thu Mar 20: Slept in the fore noon. In the P.M. went up to the Whitehouse with Whitney's folks.
Fri Mar 21: Pleasant day in the AM finished splitting my wood up on Smiths place. In the P.M. made garden a little and dug parsnips. Planted some peas, lettuce, Radishes & buts(?).
Sat Mar 22: Did not do much of anything. Rain again last night. Went down to Whitneys in the evening and heard some music.
Sun Mar 23: Got up done the chores, then went over to Harry's and from there went to Al Leamers. Got dinner & staid all night.
Mon Mar 24: Came from Al's this morning. Got home at noon and worked on the Roller in the P.M. Pretty hard rain last night. No plowing done yet in this neighborhood. Leamer's ground in good order. Calhoun working 5 teams today.

Tue Apr 15: Worked at home in the A.M. setting out berries &c. Worked 5 hours on Jakes Roller. Whitney tried to plow but the land was all too wet. Rain again this evening.
Wed Apr 16: Worked on Highbargers Roller 9 hours. Rain again last night. Went up to the Ridge & sawed out some washers for the Roller.
Thu Apr 17: Rain again this. Land too wet to plow. Worked at home making a hog pen. Pleasant in the P.M.
Fri Apr 18: Have worked 42 hours on the Roller to this date. In the AM finished up the hog pen. Went up and cleaned out the ditch to the sluice box. In the PM worked on the Roller 3 hours. Clowdy with north wind. Got 14 eggs to day & 6 hens wanted to set.
Sat Apr 19: Trimmed the fruit trees, dug carrots, fixed the flower beds in the A.M. In the P.M. sawed stuff for a plank walk in front of the house. Pleasant.

Thu May 01: The ground pretty wet but kept plowing on the Allen 80. Showery day. Poor day for picknics &c. Whitney finished harrowing in wheat.
Fri May 02: Hard rain last night. Went up to Kalso's and got my boat fixed in the morning. Spaded a little in the garden. In the P.M. moved across the slough & plowed a little, but it was too wet & soft. Whitney went to LaConner.
Sat May 03: Rain most all last night. Did not plow any today but moved lock across the slough. Duer plowed. Helped move & fixed plow in the P.M.
Sun May 04: Wrote a letter to Ida & sent her money to come home. Ed Stacey was here. Went down to Klingenmaiers in the P.M. with Whitneys folks. Pleasant.
Mon May 05: Plowing for Whitney on the "allen 80". Pleasant day. He sowed 5 2/3 acres of barley on my place to day.
Tue May 06: Plowed for Whitney in the A.M. Rainy. Rained all the afternoon & evening 3/4 inches of water fell. Carlson was here in the afternoon. Went to Whitneys and got some paint and began painting the kitchen floor.
Wed May 07: Finished painting the floor & painted the sitting room. Worked in the garden some. Had a good drying wind to day.
Thu May 08: (Plowed 10 days up to date inclusive) Plowing again. Fine north wind weather. Ground drying fast but is pretty soft to plow today. Mr. Moore from Skagit was here to supper.
Fri May 09: Plowing in Whitneys Peat bed with five teams. "Reckon we plowed pretty near two acres" Very fine day. Northwind.
Sat May 10: Plowed all day for Whitney in his Peat bed. Pretty muddy. Light rain in the evening. Got a letter from Geo. and one from Ida.
Sun May 11: Went over to Browns & Soderburgs took dinner with Kamies folks. Clowdy day. Soderburg & Ball have oats & barley just coming up.

Tue Jul 01: Got to the saw mill at 2 oclock and loaded the scow. Slept in the saw mill and went to bed at 10 P.M.
Wed Jul 02: Started for home at 5 oclock. Got home at 6 oclock. Took breakfast with the sock sower Johnson.
Thu Jul 03: Did not feel very well this morning. Got up at 9 oclock. Unloaded the lumber & sawed up the s??? lumber. Took the scow home and gave Callahan the oars I made.
Fri Jul 04: Rained all day. Staid at home. Mr Upson here to dinner. Whitneys folks went to Anacortes.

Tue Dec 23: Went to LaConner today on foot. Saw Ida & Pearl but no chance for them to come home. The steamer J.B. Libby is out again. This is the coldest morning for 3 years. Brought the mail and got back at dark. Staid the eve at Whitneys. [margin: Mercury at 13°]
Wed Dec 24: Alone as usual. Went up to Clarks & cut a tree for wood. Took dinner at Clarks. A little warmer to day, clowdy. Worked on my table some. This is a fine way to spend Christmas Eve. Home & no company but cats. Such is life on Puget Sound for lots beside me too.
Thu Dec 25: Home all day. Saw no one. Very windy. Put casters & wings on my table. Cut wood some & that is all. Not much of a Christmas to get Merry over.

Thu Jan 22: Went down & got the brush and unloaded the scow. Began my shed over the scow. Rainy. Filed a saw for Klingenmaier. & made an oar.
Fri Jan 23: Rainy day. Killed a hog and cut it up and that is about all. Wilson helped me.
