It is not too hyperbolic to say that "field geophysics is mostly cable management".
Cables are ubiquitous in geophysical surveys (although some progress in wireless acquisition exists out there). Cables:
are expensive, and ...
... need to be handled with a lot of care
Key points:
do not drag cables along the ground, they outer shielding might tear
do not pull hard on the cables and put tension on them, you might break the interior wires
do not wind them overly tightly (creates tension)
always keep any caps on until you are ready to connect the cable to another cable or the acquisition equipment. Keep the ends of the cables protected and clean - no dirt in the pins/pinholes, etc.
if you are unsure about handling a cable - ask.
Over the years we've had a remarkably good record with handling the cables - let's keep a good thing going.
For our first lab meeting, we will become familiar with handling the cables (laying them out, rolling them up, etc) out on Baker Lawn. It will probably be pretty sunny and warm, so dress accordingly, wear a hat, use sunscreen, etc.
