Igneous Rocks and Processes
Notes and Comments
- One aspect to pay attention to in your reading are the various types of igneous intrusions: sills, dikes, etc. (the section on "Intrusive Bodies").
- CH 3 (Igneous Rocks) and CH 4 (Volcanism) go together, so don't view them as being distinct. It is just separated because the focus on volcanoes themselves is a large topic.
Helping yourself study
What would you list as the main themes in CH 3 from:
- The textbook reading
- From class
Can you identify the igneous rocks granite, rhyolite, diorite, andesite, gabbro, basalt?
- Where do we find each of these rocks being formed?
- What are their textures?
- Are they mafic, intermediate, or felsic?
- What is the rough makeup of these rocks in terms of both which minerals are present, and how much (a little, a lot, etc. - looking for the trends, not exact percentages).
Have you tried the questions at the end of the chapter readings?
