A very, very, little bit about me.
What does the word geology mean?
Can some knowledge of geology fit into your major or life?
What sorts of geologists are there? (i.e. branches of geology)
Geologists make field observations of rocks and landforms ultimately to make
geologic maps. But in the field they make a lot of
field sketches. Make sketches of the following two outcrops:
Here is another outcrop with layers of sandstone and shale. Notice the erosion. Which rock is eroding?
Here are some rock samples — you should try to imagine how each of these formed. To do that, you
need to observe how the rocks look! It's ok not to know, the point is to practice thinking geologically.

Syllabus and Schedule Overview - how does the course run?
Trying to add? Until Friday the Registrar's Office controls enrollment by automatically moving people on the
waiting list into the course. So get on (or stay on) the waiting list. After that I get Permission Numbers Tuesday
January 17th is the last day to add. We will handle any adds to the class on that day if there is space. . Until then, you are welcome to come to class.
