The Franciscan Complex

The Estero Bluffs in Cayucos | Back to the GEOL 241 Homepage

Introduction

We have seen parts of the Franciscan Complex (or melange) in our Poly Canyon activities as well as on our geologic maps. In this field lab we get a chance to see its components up close in one area to appreciate its complexity and talk about its formation.

Location & Directions

We will meet at the same parking lot on campus we did last week and caravan out to the site. Below are some general directions:

Take HWY 1 north from San Luis Obispo through Cayucos. Once you have passed through Cayucos (which doesn't take long!) there will be a left turn lane for N. Ocean Ave. Turn left, crossing southbound HWY 1, and then make an immediate left onto a dirt road leading into a parking area. Take the trail from the NW corner of the parking area, and follow the trails shown on the field handout.
