The flier to the right provides detailed information and dates related to the SS JOHN W BROWN Steam Schools for year 2024.
Steam School started as a crazy idea one lunchtime, as a means to help raise funds to keep the SS John W Brown steaming. It has evolved into a three day maritime experience in reciprocating steam engineering and shipboard living, with a mix of history thrown in. Sessions are a mix of classroom presentation and hands-on operation. Each school is unique and driven by the interest of our guests. Steam School is a special offering by Project Liberty Ship where guests have the opportunity to experience living aboard the ship, learn about liberty ship history, learn how the ship and equipment operates, light off the boilers, operate engine room equipment, as well as operate the cargo winches up on deck. Each guest will receive their own binder with copies of all slides, handouts, and other information related to the Steam School experience, and a copy by email of the WWII Maritime Commission Training Manual.

Steam School is typically limited to about 16 guests to maintain a close and friendly environment. The instructors are the same individuals that operate and maintain the ship, so they are very knowledgeable and proud to share their knowledge of the ship and how things operate. There are about 25 – 30 Project Liberty Ship members supporting a Steam School, so there will always be someone nearby to explain things and answer any questions. We enjoy getting to know our guests.
Veterinarians, airline pilots, museum curators, students, historians, veterans, mechanics, retirees, ship salvage coordinators, and stay at home moms to name a few, have all participated in Steam School. No prior experience is required, just come, learn, make new friends, and have a great time. Guests have included, single individuals, couples, fathers and sons, brothers, friends and long time acquaintances, all looking for a unique way to spend a long weekend with each other.
We ask each guest to complete an “End of Course Questionnaire” so we can continue to improve and see if we have met their expectations. After six successful Steam Schools, 100% of the questionnaires have indicated we have met and/or exceeded our guests’ expectations.
The Liberty Log is an internal Newsletter communication within Project Liberty Ship, a recent article describes the details of Steam School #6 held on November 4 – 6, 2022. Liberty Log Article
Here's a short video (1 ½ minutes) made by Towson University covering an annual visit to the ship by a thermodynamics class. We're not just a historic vessel or living museum, Project Liberty Ship is dedicated to being an educational resource. Thanks to the Towson University Marketing and Communication Dept especially Henry Basta, Jack McLauglin and Professor James Overduin for letting us share this with you.
Our guests have repeatedly told us the “Steam School Experience” is special and unique, come join us and see for yourself in one of our upcoming Steam School sessions.
