Extra Credit Opportunities


These opportunities add one point each to your final average,
up to a maximum of five points.
See the Moodle page to submit a file containing all your photos, screenshots, etc.
Please put at the top your name and how many points you are submitting.
(If I disagree, I'll let you know)
Please upload your file by Tuesday of the last week of classes
(the week before exams)
  • Visit the ASC for tutoring help and have the tutor email you a note to put in your Word document.
  • Swiss Valley Nature Center: Hike downhill from the Nature Center, then upstream to the second bridge (about 10 minutes). Take your photo there with the stream in the background.
  • Hike to the quarry at Horseshoe Bluff in the Mines of Spain. Take a photo of yourself with the Bluff behind you.
  • Visit the River Museum. Take a photo of yourself in front of the computer consoles downstairs or at the stream table.
  • Ride public transport here in Dubuque and take a photo onboard.
  • Find a news article related to geology, send me the link, and write a few sentences summarizing it. You can choose multiple articles for multiple points.
  • Go somewhere outdoors that is geologically interesting, take a photo, and convince me that it is worth extra credit.
  • Write something once per section ahead of the test with an analysis of what is helping you and what is hindering you in learning the material. Simple statements like "Not studying" don't count.
  • Take the Grit test at http://angeladuckworth.com/grit-scale/. Take a screenshot of your score and how you interpret it.
  • Take the quiz at https://todoist.com/productivity-methods to find your best time-management method. Tell me a bit about it.
  • Take the survey of character strengths at http://www.viacharacter.org/blog/beyond-grit/ Copy your top 5 strengths and add a few comments on them.
