Titusville Tournament 1/10/98

Updates from Darth-Setter 1/10/98
After playing a so-so first game against eventual tournament champion Central Florida VBC (resembling the defunct 12-pack team from last year), but winning 15-13, we rolled through the rest of the pool play handily thrashing all comers. The semi-final against Florida U. was another 15-3 trouncing, placing us in the finals against the previously mentioned Central Florida VBC.

An error-filled first game in which we erased a 5 point deficit to lead 13-12 was "uglyfied" (new word!) by a horrible net non-call to which the Central FLA player was trying to notify the ref of throughout the play. The officials must not have noticed that half the people had stopped playing, because the net was so flagrant and he may calling it on himself. The ref must also have determined that the Central FLA "spider/tuna" must have been mistaken, because instead of us getting the 14th point, it became their side out. So we lose the first game, thrash them in the second game and then even win the flip and receive serve for the rally scoring 15 point game three!

We scored the first point on our side out and from then on the wheels came off the wagon. After the smoke cleared I think it was about 15-9 or 10. Passing errors, hitting errors all add up really fast in rally scoring. We did block a few balls in our furious rally attempt when they were up 13-6. Either way, it was necessary to expose what we need to work on to get us into mid-season form (even though it just started). Amazing effort by Rick Taylor blocking middle (since Romine couldn't make it). Unfortunately, he also was given this tournament's DORK award for the most amazingly DORKY play. Hit of the day belonged to Kurt on a one-ball off of a jump set in the finals. A full, crushing "Wally-Warhead"! Raik got runner-up on a "reply-to-your-crush-with-our-crush" X-ball.
