SUNSHINE STATE GAMES - 1998

The Sunshine State Games were held on 7/12/98 in Kissimmee, FL with 5 men's volleyball teams competing for the tittle. The teams in the tournament were Miami International, South Florida VBC-Miami, Your Name Here VBC, 40 Something and Darkside VBC. Pool play was 2 games to 11 (cap 13) round robin. We played our first match vs. Miami International and split 1-1. Our next match was against Miami and again we split, winning the first and losing the second. The third match was against YNHVBC and we lost the first game (with Raik setting) and then rebounded, winning the second 16-14. The last match of pool play was against 40 Something which we won 2-0. This gave us the third seed in pool and a semifinal match against YNHVBC. This went quickly with all cylinders firing 15-2. The finals were against South Florida VBC-Miami, which finished 1st in the pool and had a bye into the finals. We jumped out to a lead and switched at 8-5. With South Florida VBC-Miami arguing several calls and becomming abusive with the referee, three red card points helped our cause, but the game was never in question. The final was 15-5 and they were lucky to get that many. Darkside became the 1998 Sunshine State Games Men's Volleyball Champions.
