Disney Classic 1/31/98 - 2/1/98

2/2/98 Update from Darth-Setter.
Darkside, Well, another weekend has gone by and Darkside has defined itself a little further. It was nice to have the full squad for a tournament.
Question: What are: 5,4,7,7,6,5,6,8 ? The points we gave up in our first four matches against our pool and in the quarter finals. No one even came close to double digits. Sure didn't feel like it!

It was cool to see that Wade's parents and Kurt's mom (the lasagna queen) made it to the tourney. Where does Wade get his "slothiness" from? Not from his parents - must have been something in the drinking water when he was young.

Summary: Although we lost to Shag Me Baby again, there isn't anyone on our team that doesn't believe we can't beat these guys (should have beat these guys). Two less individual mistakes and the score would have been reversed and we would have been in the finals. This too shall pass. The match for "Who cares" (3rd) was a good experiment and probably put the fear of God into Club/Sets. They are not the big sticks in Florida as they were in the past; we will take them to the wire no matter who we put out on the court. Next time we'll go past the wire. Pretty bold words from a team that has trouble finishing games. True. But, we are getting better and we will continue to do so.

Dork Award: I know this is what everyone is waiting for. It's tough to choose from all the possibilities. I have to go back to the definition of how the Dork Award is awarded. It is for a play that causes all others around the person to immediately think "What a DORK!" With these limitations set, a few candidates come to mind:
- Vicki standing on the motel bed and pounding her hand into a concrete ceiling trying to quiet the people upstairs. No wood here in Florida (ouch!) - not really a play, but a dork move.
- Greg forgetting two out of three uniform shirts AND realizing it 15 minutes from home and not going back for them (Good looking team picture, Greg!). - not a play, but a MAJOR DORK move.
- Raik's open net 2nd ball crush - into the net (Good crowd response!).
All three of these were mentioned as being contestants, but they didn't bring the desired response when committed by the DAC (Dork Award Candidate).
The one play that did bring out the "What a DORK!" response from all around, was the great 1-ball swing by Wade. A great pass, Wade provides a great draw, block goes up huge, play set is wide open, the set gracefully drifts over Wade's reach to an eagerly waiting tandem or X hitter when Wade rips into the net and entangles himself. Everyone stopped and immediately signaled the DORK sign. So, by unanimous team vote, Wade gets the Dork Award for the tournament.

Just so we all remember, the Dork Award is all in fun and not meant to comment on anything but a brief, especially embarrassing moment during the course of one competition. If you haven't won a Dork Award sometime in your playing career, you are either playing with people who are bigger dorks than you, or you're just not trying hard enough. Enough commentary.

This weekend is Eckerd. 10 team tournament. We are in. I should me un-hobbled by then and back to my dumping self. Everyone says they're in - please confirm. We would be off the weeked of the 14th and then we're off to Atlanta the 21st. Wash and remember your jerseys!
