Life of Brian

Brian Smart

This web site is a look into the life of Brian Smart

From local radio presenter-DJ
to computer programmer
to property investor

Sixties

Merchant Taylors School in Crosby, Liverpool gave its pupils a 90 minute lunch break. That was long enough for Brian to cycle home and present an "as-live" lunchtime show and get back for afternoon lessons. A Stella reel-to-reel tape recorder captured the results for playback after school. A daily trainng regime was in place.

Seventies

Mobile discos were a new concept then and there were no ready made units. The owner of a local hi-fi shop provided Brian with a custom designed unit and transport to the first bookings. "The greatest DJ in this here land" according to Kenny Everett, Brian gained a breakfast show in Middlesbrough at the age of 18. He later lived in a converted Bedford coach with his first wife, Anne, during a brief break in his radio career.

Eighties

Working night and day across two radio stations and operating five mobile disco units made this a profitable time, if an exhausting one. Leaving Marcher at the end of 1987 ended 19 years of broadcasting full time.

Nineties

When you have a good surname, name your businesses from it. Get Smart! Brian met his second wife, Ruth, in 1995 but held off getting married until 2004. This was a decade of working from business premises and employing people. Tried it but didn't like it.

Noughties

It takes something major to make you change the way you live your life. Like losing over 8 stone very quickly and having to be fed on a nasal tube. If you recover from that you are likely to treat every day as more precious than you did before. That is the story of Brian's mid life crisis... A need for passive income meant Brian turned to property. He couldn't work for money for a while, so money had to work for him.

...and beyond

Brian went for Internet services at the end of the nineties and registered smartserve.net. By the 2010's web hosting was the only remaining service as it could be run from any location. Property business continued into retirement and a limited company was formed to take on new challenges.
