For those outside the greater Beantown area or without Web access (or too
lazy to go to an out-of-town paper stand) here's the text of this article
(apologies if John (Lexis-Nexis) Heckler beat me to the post).

FOREVER DEAD: SHOULD THE GRATEFUL DEAD HAVE CONTINUED AFTER JERRY
GARCIA? NO

By Matthew Gilbert, Boston Globe Staff, 12/15/95

There's little I crave more than more Grateful Dead. Since August, when
Jerry Garcia inched his way into another land, this world has become a
less hospitable place for me and for everyone who thrived on his
farflung musical explorations. The six nights the Dead were meant to
play Boston in late September stingily crept by, unyielding. Once more,
the eternal duel between death and desire.

And yet there is little I dread more than more Dead. The Grateful Dead
without Garcia would be like the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger, or
the Beatles without John Lennon: a lesser thing, a curiosity, a
Frankensteinian creation that is neither original band nor cover band.
Remember the Band without Robbie Robertson? It was not really the Band,
was it, except for marketing purposes? The Grateful Dead is not a
franchise whose basic contents can be infinitely juggled.

When the Dead announced the end last week, I felt sorrow but also
relief. The band's restraint goes against every hedonistic and
commercial American rule that urges more, more, more. You know, keep
the mother rolling even when the grooves are gone. With typical
integrity, the Dead made a choice based not on money but on aesthetics
and spirit. While a Garcia-less Dead tour would certainly sell out, if
only because of the curiosity factor, the band members have never let
finances dictate their decision-making. That's why they were always
willing to let Deadheads tape their shows.

Yes, Deadheads now need a place to convene. But must that new place
have the same name as the old? Could the Tom Tom Club call themselves
Talking Heads in good conscience? Thankfully, Jimmy Page and Robert
Plant had the good grace to avoid calling their recent endeavor Led
Zeppelin. Everybody seems to agree that ``Free as a Bird'' by the
``Beatles'' is a mediocrity. Now, the very creation of the song
detracts from the life arc of the Beatles, which no longer ends
brilliantly with ``Abbey Road'' and ``Let It Be'' but peters out with
an exhumed vocal performance by Lennon in 1995. It's a poorly made
sequel to the best pop act of the century, one that has fed a few
pockets but not many heads.

I don't mean to diminish the other Dead members, particularly Bob Weir,
Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann, who have been steady, equal parts of the
equation since day one. I saw many Dead shows that were all about
Weir's slinky rhythmic licks, or Lesh's singing bass. The Dead was
nothing if not a free musical conversation among peers, and I welcome
whatever these artists produce in the future, together and with others.
But Garcia was the solar force of the universe known as the Grateful
Dead, unlike other late members like Pigpen and Brent Mydland. I'm
sorry, but he just was. He was unique and powerful. It was what made
him great. Carlos Santana jamming his way through ``Sugaree'' or
``Truckin'''? No, Garcia is irreplaceable.

With Garcia's death, something has come to an end. And finality is
always hard to accept, easy to deny. To continue the Dead would be to
support collective denial about the death of it's most integral member.
Nobody wants Garcia to fade away, but replacing him might be the
quickest way to distract ourselves from his memory. Listen to the
tapes. Listen to that perfect ``Morning Dew'' on ``Europe '72.'' Look
at the pictures. Grief is a difficult feeling to hold onto - it's so
easily derailed. But right now, grief, and not delusion, is the way to
love. The Dead are dead, long live the memory of the Dead.

This story ran on page 75 of the Boston Globe on 12/15/95.
