| The Songs | ||
| "Bury
Me Standing" explores Robert Johnson territory at a
crossroads, and it's definitely spooky enough.
A rip-snorting version of a tune Weir did with the Dead, a more recent collaboration with Robert Hunter, "Corrina," proves that RatDog can hold its own with any other outfit. "October Queen" slinks and sleazes its bluesy way over a New Orleans stomp, as Weir describes an evening's entertainment with a Queen Ð what sort, you decide. "The Deep End" is an instrumental stretch out. "Even So" was written in the Ôdark midnight of the soul.' In it, there is a garden that's "never seen the light of day." Dark garden indeed. |

The Pizza Tapes
Jerry Garcia David Grisman Tony Rice
Release Date April 25th, 2000
![]() |
This is probably my
favorite CD from Acoustic Disc that features Jerry
Garcia. It's hard to beat Not For Kids Only or
the Garcia/Grisman Acoustic CD's, but this one is special. Recorded February
4th and 5th in 1993, this is a once-in-a-lifetime meeting
of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, brought
together by mando-master David Grisman. The feeling is so relaxed, and the playing just sparkles. It's an HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) disc, and sounds incredible. There are many snippets of conversation, labeled "appetizer," where the sheer joy these guys are having just comes gushing out. A tasty treat indeed! Preorder Now! GDF SKU: CD-ACD-41 |
[notes from the Acoustic Disc website]
The Pizza Tapes - Garcia, Grisman and Rice
Legend has it that a pizza delivery boy lifted Jerry Garcia's cassette tape of two evenings worth of very special music from his kitchen counter, thus paving its way into underground tape trading circles and giving a handle to these incredible performances. Now at last, from the vaults of Dawg Studios comes the sonically superb official release of this historic jam session, the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, introduced to each other by their mutual friend and musical associate, mandolinist/producer David Grisman. The Pizza Tapes capture these virtuosos at a rare moment in time, free of pressure, hassles or any given agenda other than making music and having plenty of fun.
Jerry sings several tunes not only unique to his repertoire but captured here for the first and only time: "Long Black Veil", "House of the Rising Sun", and "Man of Constant Sorrow". Along with the folk/country classics "Rosa Lee McFall", "Little Sadie", and "Louis Collins" are jazz-infused versions of "So What", "Summertime" (a Garcia/Rice guitar duet) and several free-form extended trio improvisations. Emotional renderings of "Amazing Grace" and Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" add the final topping to this already spicy pie; and with the tape left rolling, the listener is literally right in the studio with the guys as they let it all hang out in between tunes-it's like getting extra toppings for free! The Pizza Tapes is a landmark recording and one of Acoustic Disc's best sounding releases. Get it while it's hot!

promises to be a true collectors item.
Grateful Dead Records/Arista Announce the Release of "So Many Roads"
NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1999--Given the Grateful Dead's vast release of material from their vault (14 and soon to be 15 "Dick's Picks" two-track shows, as well as 5 CD's of multitrack live material), it comes as a bit of a surprise that they have not yet released a full-bore boxed set of rarities and obscuriana.
Your wait is over. "So Many Roads (1965-1995)," out November 9,1999 (price ~$49.98 to $69.98) on Grateful Dead Records/Arista, will be a 5-CD package full of all the goodies Dead Heads have been awaiting, including studio out-takes, inspired moments, and you-name-it.
"So Many Roads (1965-1995)" was compiled by a committee that included the late Dick Latvala, Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans, Wired editor Steve Silberman, co-author of Skeleton Key: A Dictionary for Deadheads,, and Blair Jackson, editor of the best fan magazine of all time, The Golden Road, and the new Garcia: An American Life. It will feature archival packaging, with unpublished photos and essays by prominent writers.
Three examples of what you'll find: "You Don't Have to Ask," a live version of an unreleased and terribly obscure Dead tune from 1966, "Cream Puff War," from 1966, and the studio version of the legendary "Mason's Children." Also, studio rehearsal versions of the "missing album" of material from the last days of the Dead, like "So Many Roads" and "Days Between."
That sound you hear is the sound of Dead Heads, arguing about whatever got left out, and cheering what they know they'll find.
According to Geoff Gould, a sampler CD is being
released to radio stations and reviewers soon. As a
special treat to GDF list members, here is the info I've received
on it:
Cream Puff War 5:57
You Don't Have to Ask 3:55
