A POST FROM PHIL REGARDING NYE
From Dead Net Central

Reddy Kilowatt - 10:21pm Oct 15, 1999 PDT (#297 of 343) Posted:

What a Difference a Year Makes First, let me respond to "The Post". It’s true that in the late 70’s and early 80’s I drank and partied to excess; I’m sure that my higher self was buried deep back then. I met Jill in ‘82 (no, not on the road) and am proud to say that I have been a loving and faithful husband and a fully participating father. My wife and sons have always been top priority and have always traveled with me. My marriage and family are my greatest achievements. I am sorry to disappoint those of you who were counting on New Years with the surviving members, but I will not be performing. I am blessed to be able to look forward to my 60th birthday soon after very nearly dying a couple of times last year. I toured for 30 years; I toured even when sometimes I would have rather been home. The band usually toured because we loved it, but there were times when we toured because of the demand; fan demand, promoter demand, overhead demand. I promised myself then that when the Grateful Dead ceased to be that I would only perform for musical adventure and personal joy; I am keeping that promise made to myself so long ago. My love for the GD community persists even in the presence of the puerile driveling that’s been posted here recently. God bless you all, Phil

Phil, Bobby & Donna Jean sang the National Anthem at the last game ever at Candlestick Park on 9/30 (Giants vs. Dodgers). According to The San Francisco Chronicle's Ron Kroichick, these former members of "the Grateful Dead performed the anthem with dispatch, taking 1 minute and 27 seconds. Jerry Garcia would have been proud." Bobby & Donna walked off arm-in-arm as Shakedown Street was played over the PA system.
Also see The San Francisco Examiner Article here.

Bobby sat in at the Hornsby/Raitt/Brown/Colvin show last night at Shoreline. He covered the high parts during Stay, and sang on the final encore Black Muddy River.

From the San Francisco Chronicle 9/18:
"[Al] Gore later attended a $1,000-per- plate fund-raiser at the sprawling Los Gatos estate of real estate businessman George Marcus. About 200 people dined on grilled shrimp, chicken and stuffed mushrooms and were entertained by former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart." Tipper Gore joined the two along with Giles McNamee (guitar) for this 1st reunion since April's fundraiser. The so-called Flying Other Brothers Band provided the music, with Tipper drumming with Mickey for Women Are Smarter. Among other GD tunes played was Sugar Magnolia.

This first-rate set promises to be a true collectors item.

Grateful Dead Records/Arista Announce the Release of "So Many Roads"

NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1999--Given the Grateful Dead's vast release of material from their vault (14 and soon to be 15 "Dick's Picks" two-track shows, as well as 5 CD's of multitrack live material), it comes as a bit of a surprise that they have not yet released a full-bore boxed set of rarities and obscuriana.

Your wait is over. "So Many Roads (1965-1995)," out November 9,1999 (price ~$49.98 to $69.98) on Grateful Dead Records/Arista, will be a 5-CD package full of all the goodies Dead Heads have been awaiting, including studio out-takes, inspired moments, and you-name-it.

"So Many Roads (1965-1995)" was compiled by a committee that included the late Dick Latvala, Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans, Wired editor Steve Silberman, co-author of Skeleton Key: A Dictionary for Deadheads,, and Blair Jackson, editor of the best fan magazine of all time, The Golden Road, and the new Garcia: An American Life. It will feature archival packaging, with unpublished photos and essays by prominent writers.

That sound you hear is the sound of Dead Heads, arguing about whatever got left out, and cheering what they know they'll find.

NOTES: ICE magazine incorrectly listed "Passenger" on disc 3. We wanted to use the track, but it made the CD too long. (The CD timings are already maxed out over the standard limit for CDs.) Also, the Dark Star jam from '74 fades in a few minutes into the jam. It would have been better to include the whole thing, but again, we bumped our heads against the 78-or-so-minute limit for CDs, and it's a fantastic passage of music in this context.

According to Geoff Gould, a sampler CD is being released to radio stations and reviewers soon.  As a
special treat to GDF list members, here is the info I've received on it:

Cream Puff War   5:57
You Don't Have to Ask   3:55

BOBBY GOT MARRIED!DETAILS HERE / PHOTO

From David Gans:
There have been many GD BOXED SET ideas kicked around.  The one we're working on seems to be the one that's gonna happen, and it seems to be a four-disc set covering the 30 years of GD history with a fifth disc of all the "new" material.

The Saragossa Manuscript:
re-release of a classic 60's movie, one of Jerry's all-time favorites.

Warner Brothers are planning a "deluxe" 2 CD set featuring the studio Anthem along with a live disk mirroring this. There is apparently an October release date but if Phil's schedule won't allow for this it'll be out in the early part of next year.

A sequel to the Live at the Keystone CDs will be coming out from Merl Saunders from some of the same original tapes. GDM might be prepping us by adding the original CDs to their catalog.

FURTHUR IS CANCELLED (AGAIN)
(from GDHotline June 15, 1999)
Dear Dead Heads:
With regret, we have to announce that there will be no Furthur Festival this year. We apologize for the confusion, but it was generated by our honest attempt to respond to a whole lot of requests for us to keep trying even when it was really too late.
Unfortunately, you can't put together a whole tour at the last second.
Planet Drum and Ratdog will be at Woodstock, and will be playing more gigs around that time.
We promise to try again next year.
Hang in there -- and stay in touch.
Best, Dennis McNally for Bobby, Mickey, and Hunter

No Furthur For Phil
Phil Lesh - 2/27/99 10:40pm PDT (DeadNet Central #18 of 33) I prefer to let the music speak for me but I will respond to this because of my great respect and love for all Deadheads... I agreed in January '98 to join Bobby, Mickey and Bruce to form a band for one Furthur Festival. The Furthur Festival is owned by Metropolitan Entertainment in New York and is completely separate from Grateful Dead Productions. I enjoyed playing with each and every musician in The Other Ones last year, but the tour was extremely stressful due to business and creative differences. I honored my commitment and made no promises for future shows. After my surgery I was approached about doing another tour but it became clear that the same unresolved issues were still haunting us. Rather than try to make music in an atmosphere rife with disagreement, I decided to spend some time in nature with my family this summer, and will try to do a few Phil and Friends gigs at some of my favorite places along the way. For those who are concerned about the "spirit" of the Grateful Dead, let me point out that the decision-making process of the Grateful Dead was that if any one member of the band didn't want to do something it was not done; our decisions were made by putting the music first, which is what I am always striving to do.

Phil Lesh Had a Liver Transplant - he's OK tho!
From Phil Lesh personally on Dead.net - 08:52pm Dec 25, 1998 PDT
Dear Friends; I'd like you all to know that my surgery was a success
and that I was able to leave the hospital after six days, so that I
could be at home with my family for Christmas. I must say that today
was the most joyous and wonderful Christmas of my entire life,
probably because I feel completely reborn through the miracle of this
transplant and the love of so many people that has been granted to me
over the past few months. It seems to me that through the prayers and
healing light that you've sent me, that you yourselves have come
closer together, and that's the other part of the miracle. I feel so
blessed by your love and prayers, and I'm hoping to recover quickly so
that I can continue to contribute to the building of our community of
love. I'd like to ask that you send your prayers out also to the
family of the donor, whose grief must be very great at this time, and
to bless the spirit of the donor as his soul continues its journey.
