“Surrounded by beauty and serenity, staying at Monte Moita Raza was like living a dream. Set in the middle of the gorgeous rural countryside of the Alentejo region, the house is traditionally charming but with every modern convenience. Plenty of well appointed spaces that are perfect for families, couples, or friends. Fabulous showers. Huge kitchen island that we found perfect for preparing our tapas. In this house, nobody gets the "bad" bedroom because there isn't one. The smaller house next door was not occupied while we were there, but Peter and Rosemary showed us around, and it was equally as lovely as ours and a great option for extra space for large groups. Each house has private outdoor dining space, so it didn't seem that having other guests on the property would be intrusive if not part of your group. The location of the pool is perfect, with an unobstructed view to the castle. The property is rich with birds, flowers, and citrus and olive trees and has magnificent views of Marvao and the castle. With the tangerine and lemon trees just steps from the kitchen door, juicing became our daily indulgence. Early evening walks up to Marvao are a must! We enjoyed seeing the sheep, cows, and horse (Avela) daily. Although the house is secluded, it's also very close to Marvao (white village and castle; 7 mins driving); Portagem (small grocery and bakery; 10 mins ); Castelo de Vide (medieval town and castle not to be missed with large grocery; 15 mins); and Valencia de Alcantara (in Spain with outdoor market on Monday mornings; 30 mins). All of these towns also have restaurants. Ammaia (Roman ruins) are only about 12 mins from the house. We had good cell service and were able to use (Hidden by Airbnb) Maps to navigate everywhere we went. Peter and Rosemary, our genuinely delightful hosts, were helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the area. They were available (down the lane) but never intrusive. Prior to our arrival, they had stocked up with a few necessities and loaded the house with fresh fruit and flowers from the garden. We enjoyed chats with them and their son Rupert, and they went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and at home at Monte Moita Raza.”

The farmhouses are within a 100 acre farm, with organic olive groves, pastures and oak forest, run by Peter and Rosemary Eden, who have been here for more than 25 years.

They produce olive oil and also have sheep and horses which graze around freely. Wildflowers, butterflies and varied birdlife abound. This is a paradise for walkers, mountain bikers, bird-watchers and explorers. From the farm, there are views of the medieval fortified village of Marvão, perched upon its craggy hill-top.
